Who could possibly make Violet stop mid-sentence, get all startled, and blushed? Do previous scenes give a solid clue of this special person? Violet would look up, blush, eyes widen and gasp, followed by the sorrowful look of disappointment in all the scenes....except at the end, where she smiles from the heart hmmmmmm
Hodgins goes as far as knocking on Violet's door and telling her personally to go see the client immediately.
Does Hodgins know all along? Or he finds out that same day as well, but wants Violet to discover "him" by herself instead
of telling who is the waiting client who makes the urgent request.
One may argue Violet should have been a wreck if the client is the Major. However, this is the new Violet. No longer the tool yearning for her master's orders, but a girl, a strong young lady longing for her beloved. As such, she displays the tender expression of endearment....a sweet smile of reunion with a loved one.

There was a theory made somewhere in Reddit that the person may not be gilbert, but instead, it is you. The watcher who followed the story all along. Now, it is your time to write the letter. It's arguably somehow more sincere to think of it that way. However, I think they meant it for the viewers themselves to settle with who they think was the person.

As much as it pains me to admit, I think your right.... Violet still hasn't learned to deal with her most, intense grief, which is the lesson the whole anime is trying to teach.... So. Once she comes to terms with her grief, and doesn't let it interfere with her happy life that was set up just for her, the Major is gonna come back, to provide one last intense moment of bittersweet joy before the screen fades to black, and the Violet Evergarden franchise ends😖😭

I'm not sure if that's supposed to be Gilbert at the end. Spoiler warning: They may have plans for Gilbert in the movie Kyoto Animation announced. In the light novel, we learn Gilbert is alive during that battle on the train. However, they had Dietfried help violet in the fight instead. They probably thought keeping Gilbert's status as missing/presumed dead worked better for the message the studio wanted to deliver with their adaptation, particularly in regards to Violet's ongoing feelings of love for him and her belief that he may come back to her one day. Maybe in the movie they'll bring Gilbert back, but I'm not sure. Is that Gilbert at the end of the main season? Who knows. If the OVA takes place after the first season, then probably not.

Is it weird for me to think that, although I appreciate the bond between Major Gilbert and Violet and ideally, they're the main love line in the series and it would be really good if he is indeed alive, it's also okay, more realistic and not too cliché if he is not, especially with all the injuries and that blast in that war? Somehow, I'd like to entertain the possibility of Captain Dietfried Bougainville and Violet Evergarden. I like how they developed him towards the end and how they somehow gave emphasis to his reactions towards Violet and his eyes, which is by the way, the same colors as Gilbert's. I don't know, I just like the idea that Major Gilbert brought these two characters together. Anyway, I am just basing this on the series. I haven't read the novel so I do not really know the whole story or the characterizations. Just some thoughts. 😊

It should be the Major as at the time of production of anime series it was clear in the novel that Gilbert was alive. So i guess to not significantly deviate from the plot line while maintaining the creative spaces for sequels, Kyoani left the ending open with metaphorical implications such as the background flowers and her reactions at the first sight of the client, implying she will meet Gilbert one day. Of course the movie version was more explicit in portrait of the reunion.

I just finished watching this anime. The plot is familiar to me. It reminds me of Kenshin Himura's journey. Notorious assassin who fell in love, murdered his love, finding atonement, swore to never kill again, then wanders. Kenshin's past as Batousai. Also, I believe the last episode implies new chapter of her life, now that she fully understands the meaning of love. I'd like to think that it was Gilbert that she saw, but no, if it was the Major, her reaction wouldn't have been like that, it'll be too dramatic and I really wouldn't think that she could even utter a single word, let alone introduce herself if it was the Major. If there would be potential for season 2, please be it a new chapter. Please. She deserves to live, love and be loved even without Gilbert.

I would like to ask a question. In the movie Violet didn't know that the Major was alive until she learned about it from Hodgins, and she was 18 in the movie. If she had seen Gilbert before reaching 18 years old but didn't know if he was alive, that would be a little bit weird. Edit: She was 14 years old in the anime, 18 years old in the movie. If she met Gilbert at 14 (At the last scene of the anime), then what is the reunion between them when Violet was 18 if they had already seen each other before?
