By default, violins and violas have a string spacing at the upper nut of 16.5 to 17mm, measured from the middle of the first string to the middle of the fourth string. For many musicians this fits wonderfully, but for many others it results in enormous problems, which not infrequently lead to giving up playing the violin.
Especially for tall (young) men with large hands and strong bone structure, we need larger string spacing of, for example, 18 or even 19 mm and wider fingerboards to match. For (young) women with slender fingers, on the other hand, we need much narrower fingerboards and smaller string spacing of about 16 mm and less.
