I think this is a good video. It certainly gives one method of fitting a bridge and is a good start. Every violin is different . Even “identical“ violins geometrically are made from different parts of the tree. That applies to the quality of the wood in the bridge. While there are guideline dimensions, they are only guidelines. Only professional violinists, playing quality instruments, can justify the cost of a “professional “ luthier, and then there is no guarantee that the sound will suit the player. It might take 3 bridges to get the sound you like. There are just too many variables. The bridge blanks are just that and therefore oversize. I err on the safe side and leave wood on and play my violin(s). Don’t be in a hurry to remove wood. When it’s gone, it’s gone. If you are close to the sound but not sure, then make another bridge. As for comments about fitting the feet, I think the method shown is fine and will get you 95% there. You can play around with carbon paper/ chalk until the cows come home but you’ll never really know if it’s worth the effort.

@@alworashi About 3 weeks ago , I fitted a ¥¥¥ Despiau Bridge , in a very similar manner to you. I didn’t even have the feet fitting tool, but held the bridge as steadily as possible. Years ago I lowered the bridge to improve the action, but lost the tone. Then I discovered the neck angle was shallow, so recently I found an Aubert self adjusting bridge in my tool box, and stuck it on. I could immediately hear the tone improve, so I fitted the Despiau. I haven’t even trimmed the bridge internally. I’m still not 100% happy but rather than spoil my bridge , I’ll make a new one. I enjoyed your sound post video. I might adjust my sound post too, but I want to play it more first.

We can suggest a better way of fitting bridges particularly the feet of the bridge. I used to do this a few years back but was fortunate to learn a better way from a German Luthier. There is a sound & response improvement if you fit the bridges even better.

I have seen a few broken Bridges under the pressure of the Strings on the violins. The reason is weaken Bridges that could not support the Strings pressures. I appreciate your video, but what is missing is the sound samples " before and after " the modification of the Bridge. Thanks to add open Strings sound samples " before " the modification and " after " the modification. This will certainly help. Is the trimming off by sight only or is there a mathematical calculation to do ? After the trimming off, should the Sound Post be re-positioned ? Thanks to give further tips.

Can i decorate my bridge? like paint or draw in the bridge
@aszymanski42339 жыл бұрын
+carolina torres For the love of Stradivarius, please, NO! The sound quality will be altered, you may destroy the bridge, not to mention that if you are asking a question like this you will certainly change the position of the bridge and be totally unable to restore it properly. Focus on making art with your music, not drawing on and destroying a violin. If you really want to draw on one go order a cheap $40 Chinese violin and do that.

This is a very interesting video, I know very little about violin making, however I recognise skill when I see it. I wonder if someone could explain if this is intended to make the violin sweeter, louder, or softer? Is it best suited to a soloist's violin or for a member of an orchestra? Or perhaps it is particularly suited to Turkish traditional music? Perhaps someone might even know what each individual adjustment is intended to achieve? I would be most grateful for any insight. Thanks again for such a wonderful video. Kevin
@JgHaverty9 жыл бұрын
The bridge itself is intended to simply transfer vibrations to the top. Its more about style and function over sound changes. Now it CAN affect sound, but thats more of a fit issue than style or form will matter. They are pretty standard otherwise.

Kevin Geaney I think the principle is to remove as much weight of wood as possible in the bridge, but retaining strength. the idea of the bridge is to move as much energy as possible from the strings to the soundbox (body); the more wood in the bridge, the less sound energy gets transferred.

amateur work. you don't rub the feet with sand paper, he left it too thick.
@kyproset8 жыл бұрын
I'm not a luthier, but since I have a very valuable violin, I use the best luthiers. The way they cut the feet is by making the feet fit exactly the spot on the belly. The way they do it is with chalk. Rubbing chalk on to the underside of the feet of the bridge and then placing it on the exact spot on the violin. By what chalk is transfered on to the belly, they carve away. Then they thin the feet at the kidneys. I hope this helps.
@wilfdell11537 жыл бұрын
Kypros is right, this video shows poor methods. I'm by no means an expert, but I'm learning luthiery now, and I've fitted a couple of bridges by hand. The feet should be fitted with a knife, instead of sandpaper. Lazy Bug, the thickness is graduated from the feet to the edge of the bridge. This diagram gives a good guide to the correct thicknesses - I think different luthiers will vary these thicknesses slightly, but the figures here are very close to what I've been taught to do. It doesn't mention the thickness right on the top edge of the bridge in this diagram: I take the edge thickness to about 1.2 mm. More than 1.5 at the edge would be too thick I would say. www.makingtheviolin.com/Building/Setup/Bridge/7.svg

This bridge is both too thick and over carved. Those kidneys are too deep. Not good for sound. And no detail fitting on the feet ... I imagine this bridge will have a difficult time staying flat onto the instrument.
