perhaps a silly question: what would happen if, prior to drilling depth holes, one outlined where the bass bar goes and then drilled holes around it, thereby carving out the top plate with the bass bar as one?

Good question....I have seen anything from 5.5mm to 6.5mm. The standard is around 6mm. It can vary based on the density of the top plate and whether you graduation is thin or thick. If you have a thin graduation there is a tendency to use a slightly thicker bassbar.

@@infinitepawer It should go over the centre of the left foot. However the relationship of the 2 ends of the bassbar should be adjusted to keep the correct proportions

@@direland72 Another question: How do we know if we put the new bridge at the right place so that the bass bar is go over the left foot of the bridge ?? You see i dont even know how thick is my violin's bass bar. Thanks

@@infinitepawer THe measurements for the bassbar take into account the placement of the bridge. If you have done the measurements correctly the foot of the bridge will be over the bassbar on the final setup of the instrument.

when drilling holes into the plate, how deep do you know to go?

I have created a jig on my drill press and I align it with the depth stop. for the top plate I depth stop it at about 4mm. For the bottom plate I depth stop at about 5.5 - 6mm.

ah i see, I know the calipers help but those can't be used if drilling so that's where I became confused. Thanks!

Minum untuk bahagian atas. Maple untuk yang lain. Ebony untuk fingerboard

no it's a violin F holes I was looking upside down

in my opinion that F holes are a bit too high up should be lower but it's not my violin
