Great video!!! The scroll is surely a challenge. The parts I find hardest, for some reason, are carving out the pegbox (especially that far part at the very end, under the scroll head, getting it far enough down) and figuring out how to do the very end button (I don't know what you call it) of the scroll, how to transition the ramp smoothly to that button. Any tips for me, Stephen? :)

Hi Kathy! I also find the deepest part of the pegbox near the A string a challenge. I use a fairly heavy mortising chisel to hog out most of the waste. A thousand little cuts. I approach the buttons of the scroll, the widest ends where the scroll is tightest, with a lot of caution. I recommend working from the pegbox out to help make sure the widest part of the scroll stays in proportion. I purchased a pre carved scroll a few years ago with the intention of using it in a violin build. I never did build a violin with it but it is a great reference to help organize my thoughts when carving.

@@Stephenmboone "I recommend working from the pegbox out to help make sure the widest part of the scroll stays in proportion. " --- I'm not clear on what you mean here. Oh, and I remember the very first time I carved a scroll (back in 2001!) --- I've only done 3 so far, not counting the teeny-tiny violin --- it took me quite a while to understand the concept of all the scroll-cutting and ramping. It still amazes me how you can get such a carved shape from a block of wood! It's fun, but challenging, for sure! (And a great feeling of accomplishment when it comes out okay!)

@@kathmatsushita the nomenclature is weird. What I am saying is that the smallest, widest part of the scroll is the last thing I carve. If the scroll was indeed a rolled up tube of paper, I am referring to the center of the roll.

@@Stephenmboone Yes, I do that, too, cutting and working up the ramp towards the "eye" (is that what it's called?). Thanks.

Not only the scroll but the neck of the violin. I would have titled the video "making the neck of a violin'

Beautiful work! It is a shame it has to be varnished! Is it true that violins, like guitars, actually sound their best in the 'white'?

I think violins get more focused with varnish but things don't change too much. I only apply 7-8 sessions.

If guitars and violins didn't have a finish they would be more susceptible to humidity changes. And this could cause cracks. And their tone might change constantly. Also a good finish could brighten up a dark sounding instrument.
