Thanx for the feedback. There are heaps of strings out there that I haven't included... I'll probably end up doing another video with the other strings one day. The recording was done with a good quality Rode condenser mic connected to the camera. I could have set up a decent studio environment for the day( being an ex -recording engineer), but I really had to do it when the inspiration hit me.... I'm pretty happy with the sound despite the acoustic environment. -Rich

I bought the Infeld Reds. They are fantastic. I have long been in search of that dark/warm sound. However, like the review says they are not really that 'dark'. The gold E is not harsh at all. It can be played open and responds very well to pressure. The A and D are the best I have ever played. The G is comparably a little sluggish. All of the strings have great resonance, focus, and ring. Truly, I have been very surprised and very pleased. It was not the sound I was 'searching' for, but the Reds produce the best sound I have ever heard on my violin. They also have allowed me to soften my fingering technique and play more dynamically. BUY THEM!!! You will be very happy that you did.

Thanks a lot for this video - man, those Evah Pirazzi Gold really breathe and shine, the way you play them on your violin. Really got me caught, that sound, amazing. Never thought that strings compared to the Tonica might make such a change. Greatly played! When I'm playing well enough, I am going to get this set of strings, as well for my balanced and a bit dark sounding violin. Thanks for that comprehensive and well done comparison! ~ Michael

I have tried all the popular stings myself and here are some personal opinions. 1. I won't judge them within one week from setup, all of them are very resonant but not focused on the first days because they haven't stretched enough thus are too elastic. 2. I have to adjust the sound post for every set of strings to produce the best sound, basically because of the hugh difference of their total tensions. (according to my theory) Evah Pirazzi are much stronger than Dominant thus a closer sound post to the bridge is required to balance the pressure on top. On the other hand, if you already have a very close sound post, you need to play too hard to 'drive' the bridge on softer strings which will result in a bad tone. 3. most violins are setup with too long vibration length and too high tuning, for example, 330mm at A=442, which is too far away from the factory specification of the strings (326mm at A=440), and the strings are simply not working at their designed state.

Evah Pirazzi Gold: “It’s cute. It’s got this gold sort of looking... looks a little bit gold.” I know that wasn’t meant to be funny but I’m dying. 😂 The delivery came across as: the gold is a little bit... well, gold. In all seriousness, amazing vid. Thank you for taking all the time to compile this giant comparison!! So informative. (I needed different strings as my current Pirastro Obligatos are very discouraging. They’re not bad strings, but their sound is not what I like in a violin. Finally figured that out today after trying to fit them on a new violin whose sound I liked before the strings. Then I listened to the end compilation of your vid, studying the different sounds of the strings, and only glancing at the brand after I’d made an opinion. I did that twice, just to be sure I didn’t hear things differently a second time. The instant I heard the Pirastro Obligato, I was like NO, don’t like it - both times. 😂)

Very, well made video extremely informative and Whitehorse is very knowledgeable concerning their string selections and instruments. Even though, these are great all pro series strings, certain strings struck me as being better married to student series violins and certain strings also struck me as being married to pro-series for professionals playing out and in orchestras. Student Series string selections: Pirastro Tonica, Pirastro Piranito, Obbligato Pirastro, Infeld Red Thomastiks, and Infeld Blue Thomastiks. Professional Orchestra Series: Evah Pirazzi Pirastro, Violinio Pirastro, Evah Pirazzi Gold Pirastro, Vision Titanium Solo Thomastik, Thomastik Vision Synthetic Gut, Thomastik Dominant Synthetic Core and Pirastro Oliv. Out of all of these strings, my favorite as a student is Pirastro Tonica, Pirastro Piranito and or Obbligato Pirastro. For a Pro-series and Orchestra I would go with Evah Pirazzi Gold Pirastro, Thomastik Dominant Synthetic Core and or the Pirastro Oliv All of these string selections are great selections for both the student and the pro

My takeaway from this is how marginal the differences are - I'm sure that the player's tone production is far more important. The finest fiddler I every heard - David Oistrakh - used a Prim steel A and it sounded gorgeous in his hands! The top pros mainly use Dominants or Evahs and ignore the plethora of alternatives. Of course, they have good fiddles that work well with neutral strings. Seems to me that for most of us, unless we have an instrument that has a problem that needs corrected, an affordable set of Tonicas will do just fine. Why pay 4-5 times more? Another affordable neutral string in the same price-range is the neglected John Pierce Artiste - which I slightly prefer to the Tonicas on my fiddle. Worth trying!

Evah Pirazzi is often considered the best string for master violinists because of its power and clarity. I think Infeld Red and Vision Titanium also have decent power and can be used by top violinists.... although a master violinist might have a violin that is so bright and powerful, it might need softer warmer sounding strings. Sometimes it's better to choose strings for the violin rather than the level of the violinist. Rich-

Based on this awesome video I did try out the Infeld Reds. Unfortunately, they are not working out for me. Feels like I am getting a random static feedback on the A and E, not to pleasant to the ears. My violin has a very deep rich sound on the lower strings, but the Reds do not bring it out. I am at a lost what to try next. In general, I tend to play too loud and bright sounding strings may not for me. I am tempted to give the Tonica or Dominants a try. I believe my violin is beyond a student violin. It was hand made by Bruno Franz Paulus in Germany back in the 1950's. I have owned it for about 55 years and still don't know how to compliment it with the right strings.

I still find this the best string review here, the only problem being that ( as on other reviews ) you don't try Corelli strings : Crystal is very similar to Tonica , maybe slightly brighter, and work well on viola too - Alliance, I've heard, are like a more responsive Obligato, but I haven't gotten round to trying them yet - they do a new string called Cantiga which I'd also like to see reviewed - You do such a good job here, it would be great to see an updated version...

Hi Richard, thanks for this video-many of us can't afford to change strings quickly to compare, so this video is an asset to us all! I have a question about combining strings: tried Obligatos as my first "expensive" set (with an Oliv E), loved its dark richness. I then had a new sound post put in, and Obligatos seemed a bit sluggish. I then tried Evah Pirazzi and realised the Obligatos demanded more effort to get liveliness on the D and more so on the A (but loved the richness and wolf of the G and D), while the Pirazzis sprang to life albeit a little too eagerly. SO, what are your thoughts on Obligato G with a different set for DAE? I know this depends heavily on the violin (mine is on the darker/rich side yet very quick to respond but not "bright"). Lastly, I loved the Pirazzi Gold full set so much, and was quite impressed with the Infeld Red Thomastik. Do you see an advantage of one over the other? I'm looking for richness with a nice singing ring and responsiveness (trying to have it all!) Sorry this was lengthy!!
@rbodinnar
@rbodinnar 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Christian, Yes, I agree that the obligatos can seem a bit sluggish on some instruments... especially as they get older. Although, no other set provides as much 'fullness' of sound. The Evah golds were supposed to be a cure for that and they do achieve it to a degree. They have almost the warmth of the obligatos, but with a response which is almost like the plain Evahs. I've got no problem with using a obligato G and a different set for the rest. The Infeld Red (once played in) can be like a quicker responding set of Obligatos.... I'm a big fan,,, whilst the Evah golds are a bit like that straight away.

I haven't really used the Corelli strings very much... I guess the fact that I'm not using them now must mean that I didn't love them. I don't think the Pirastro Golds would necessarily give you more brightness on the E string than the Infeld Reds... Its hard to say whether the Evah would be worth trying... you might find them a little fuller sounding than the Reds. I guess it depends on whether you're willing to pay the $ to find out. Good luck

I own the obligato ones. They have made a big difference to my violin, making the sound more velvety and less bright, which I love, specially the E string. Im in Love with it! So sweet a sound. However, the G string has developed a weird resonance as if it was vibrating excessively which makes the notes resonate for longer. It dont know if im paranoid but id love to know if anyone has experienced this. Thanks

Just ordered the Infeld G, D, A and a Pirastro Gold Label E. Was using Violino which are nice, soft maybe not as much projection. Hoping the Infeld Red will be dark with more focus/projection liked mentioned.

Thanks for your very honest reply! I still enjoyed the presentation very much, and I do appreciate how much time it must have taken to make - and I liked the speeded-up bit at the end!

I just want to say thank you so much for taking the itme and effort to do this, this is one of the most helpful videos :) I watched all of it since I'm thinking about changing my violin strings soon (maybe in a couple of months). I really enjoyed the Tonicas, pirazzi, oliv, infeld red, the blue infeld were def more brighter especially definitely the E string and I don't think I'd prefer them! I have the dominants now and Im not a big fan of the e string so I think I might change this one first... I wanted to ask you what you'd choose for a german violin that costs around 550 euros and it's not too bright?

Hi,I did not try the passione but I do have now the New Eva Pirazzi Gold and are worth their extra cost!!(with the G Gold..which is very clear,full sound and even smooth)the other strings well balanced and very sensitive to the bow as well to the left hand!They have the gut feeling!

Vision solo strings have a really rich tone, quite versatile and really ringing on my violin(on my violin, they have a similar tone to the pirastro). I prefer them over dominant strings as dominant strings can be really bright and even shrill to an extent(especially the E string). But I do feel that vision solo strings are slightly harder to control(to sustain the tone you might need more pressure etc.) than dominant strings.

Thank you for posting this extremely helpful video. I viewed it on my Dell laptop so all of your examples sounded the same, but then I switched and watched it through my TV and Bose speakers. What a difference! Could you do a comparison on the various E strings. I have been using Dominant strings for years, but my E string always sounded like a crow in distress. Lately I have been trying different brands, but nothing seems to make a difference. I have an older Maggini violin.

This video is helpful .I have a significant hearing loss which makes hearing aids react by ringing or whistling on the e string. Some of the strings played in the video caused the same thing. I've made a note of the ones which did not do this. Thanks.
