This is so good, as no one explained to me what notes go where on the tapes. Thank you Lora!

It's one of those "things" that never gets explained, and causes lots of confusion. Thanks Terry.

Absolutely LOVE your posts. This is so helpful. I am in the middle zone. I need my tapes for comfort but I have developed the ear and I know when my fingers are in the wrong spots without tapes. So I have 2 violins, one with tapes and one without.
@RedDesertViolin
@RedDesertViolin 3 жыл бұрын
That is clever....so you can go back and forth, as needed, from using tapes and not using them. It's really good that you can hear when you are in the wrong spot. Keep it up! Before long, you will realize you are not even using the tapes, and you can do just fine without them. Probably very soon.

@@RedDesertViolin thank you so much for the encouragement. Being 48 I feel so old among those youngsters that tackle hurdles so fast. My daughter plays also. She has no tapes and can tackle passages so much easier. But she is very patient with me when we play together.

The Wood Violins Fretted Viper & its metal frets make learning the instrument simpler cause I can see where the notes are. This is why they make Fiddle Fretters because kids will have a much smoother time following along on the frets.
@RedDesertViolin

Interesting! But, you still sort of have to know what the frets mean. But.....man those Vipers are COOOOOL!!!!!!

Hey Lora.... just out of curiosity, I wonder if it would be of any benefit to talk about the 5 string fiddle/violin? Just wondering if you've ever played one, if you feel the added C string is just unnecessary, is it 'gimmicky" etc., etc.... Ibanez kind of did the same thing with a bunch of their guitars. They added frets, which I personally have no use for, but they also added extra strings, again, which I have no use for. I don't think I'm answering my own question in this case though. Maybe that added string on the violin opens up all kinds of new musical possibilities whereas on the guitar it just seems to be a nuisance. IMHO it almost seems like someone was just thinking too much on ways to create something new that really had no added benefit.....
@RedDesertViolin
@RedDesertViolin 5 жыл бұрын
Tommy, I've been busy but I really wanted to come back to this question. Man, in the right hands, having the C string on a violin gives you that extra 5th, gives the violin more bass options. So depending on the styles a person plans to attempt, it can be nice. I would say for jazz or rock, it could be really cool. But for classical or very traditional stuff like Bluegrass, it might just be an impediment.

I have a question. When I’m playing a low 2, where should I slide my fingers to?
@RedDesertViolin
@RedDesertViolin 4 жыл бұрын
So sorry, this answer probably comes too late to be any help. But when you have a low 2, simply DO NOT MOVE the other fingers. Just use a low 2, and keep everyone else the same.

Glad I could help save your ass! ;-0 Tapes confuse people because we assume they are some sort of "neutral starting point".....but they aren't. They are just the "default" pattern for beginners.

Thanks for this video. At what point should a student remove their fingerboard tapes? Is necessary to do this early or can a student keep their tape on for long periods of time?
@RedDesertViolin
@RedDesertViolin Жыл бұрын
I like my students to start getting rid of tapes in late Book 1, or early Book 2. I have 2 students in Book 2 who still need their tapes.....I took them off too soon, and it backfired. They just weren't ready. But I will say this: When you start taking the tapes off, COMMIT to working hard to play in tune. GO slower. Use a tuner. Whatever it takes. And then you wuill make the transition more successfully and be happy!
@lukemanriquez5236
@lukemanriquez5236 Жыл бұрын
@@RedDesertViolin Thanks for that info. Ive been playing for 6 months and about 95% finished with All for Strings volume 1. (I plan on going through suzuki bk 1 next) I purchased a new violin and played two weeks without tapes, used a tuner every day before practice. I really struggled. I put tape back on and reviewing my All for Strings excersises trying to work on technique. I also heard that you should take tape off when you start ignoring the tape. Either way I plan to try again in a few months. Maybe one tape at a time. Really appreciate your opinion and will try to go slower when the time comes.

I know am 2 years late but am trying to play happy birthday it says low 2 but I still don’t know how to do that
@RedDesertViolin
@RedDesertViolin 2 жыл бұрын
Happy Birthday is a fairly difficult song.....so you can take comfort in that! Everyone thinks its easy because we all sing it....but it's full of skips and jumps, and that "Hap-py" rhythm.....it is not easy! I think what would help you is a reference note. You need to figure out what the NOTE would be, and then play it on a pitch generator, or a piano. So Low 2 on the E string is "G". On A, it's "C" On D, it's "F" on G, it's B-flat. So, whatever string your low 2 is happening on, find the name of the note, have it handy, and when you are playing that spot, tune your low 2 until it matches the pitch generator. If it's a physical inability to get your 2 low, you can help move it with your right hand...(until you are able to do it independently) And it should be smooshed alongside your index finger. So that should help you to find it. Good luck!

Hello im an adult violin beginner... Playing for 1 and half year now... My level is around grade 3 of abrsm. Im going to start again with suzuki book 1 to improve my basics... Planning to go all the way till book 10, So i wanna play devils trill some day... Do u think an adult violin beginner can do that? And if i complete book 10, would be in the level to play the devils trill?.. If not what further studies should i go? Do u have courses above book 5?
@RedDesertViolin
@RedDesertViolin 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Ermine, sorry so slow to reply. YES an adult beginner can work all the way up to Devil's Trill! And yes, if you reached a book 10 level, you would be able to play Devil's Trill. My Red Desert Violin courses go up through Suzuki Book 4, but the technique that is contained in those courses is enough to prepare you to continue to Book 10. In other words, if you master the concepts, you will be able to continue your progress, and succeed in higher levels. Of course, you need a teacher for those higher levels, but you don't necessarily need Suzuki books. After Book 4, it is fine to immerse yourself into general violin repertoire. OR, it's also fine to learn the repertoire from Books 5-10. But you should include advanced scale and arpeggio study (everything you need to know is in my Suzuki Book 4 class.....the scales in that class are extremely advanced.), you should also continue double stops work (also taught in Suzuki Book 4). At the end of my Book 4 class, I give you a road map to work your way through higher levels of ear training, tone, bow technique, double stops, position work, and much more. (I cannot for the life of me remember all I said in the video or I'd write it out...)
