Mine was Red. I went to the ER right away and found out that I had Stage 3 Kidney Cancer. I had my left kidney removed and so far, the cancer hasn't returned. I need to get checked at least once a year. Stage 3 Kidney Cancer has a 53% chance to live 5 years. I'm at 1 and 6 months since surgery so we'll see how it goes the next few years. So, if you have blood in your urine you can't waste any time to get it checked and if Cancer Surgery. Another few weeks or months could change it from an early stage 3 to a late stage 3 or stage 4.

@@RubyJane6904 that's the bad thing you really don't. Most people don't find out until the urine turn red. I was seeing a Nephrologist since some of my kidney numbers were off. Thank you for starting out with the warning about finding blood in the urine. I am a 75 yr. old woman diagnosed 2 1/2 years ago with bladder cancer. (I was never a smoker, but did have chemo for breast cancer 18 years before; one of the chemo drugs I was given was Cyclophosphamide, my only identified risk factor). From my first symptom (hematuria) until diagnosis took 7 months. Everyone kept testing for a UTI (always negative!). My PCP referred me to a urologist 4 months after that first episode of hematuria, and the urologist's office dragged things out another 3 months before I had a cystoscopy. I finally ended up at the closest NCI hospital (1 1/2 hours away) and had a radical cystectomy (removal of the bladder) in Feb. '22. I'm now a bag lady, and can pee standing up! Best of all, using a night bag, I can sleep through the night without having to get up and pee every few hours!

My husband drinks beet juice and was super freaked out when it turned his pee a reddish tint the first time. You should do research on cases of colored sweat. My doctor diagnosed me with having Chromhidrosis. My sweat is blue. It’s pretty interesting and also annoying since it turns my toilet seat and white clothes blue over time.

I was just coming to say this. My sister S loves beets and had quite a few with dinner. I can't remember how much later (I was in early elementary school) but she came running into the kitchen crying, "Mommy! Mommy! I'm peeing blood!" Cue my youngest sister, who was still in a high chair, saying, "It's probably her period". Talk about double takes. And it was just the beets.

5:25 - Commonly associated with turkey, yes. It should be noted though that despite turkey meat's high levels of tryptophan, the body cannot absorb almost all of it due to other competing amino acids present. Seeds and nuts should be more strongly associated, especially raw pumpkin seeds. Your body can actually use its tryptophan, especially since they contain fibre as well which helps with its uptake. Most people probably aren't getting enough, it is good to supplement.

Two summers ago when very hot, I drank so much water, but felt worse and worse. So, I drank more thinking I had heat stroke or something. I was 61 at the time, got myself to the ER and found I had hyponatremia, too much water in the system which diluted the sodium. Thankfully, I did get to the ER as I was one point above the level of seizure, coma and death as that was stated on the records. Not to mention, they found I had a heart abnormality, which made me feel worse at the time. So, I wonder why the ER doc kept me on an iv fluid unless it was all sodium to put back in my system. Good video, with good information, so I will keep tabs on this end of things in the future.

@@Chichilovee I work as a Lab Technician also known as a Med Lab Assistant. I do mostly phlebotomy and process lab samples. The Med Lab Technologists are the ones doing the actual testing of samples so perhaps that is something they would learn in their training. My job is mainly the pre-analytical side of things like collecting and processing samples. In school we did learn a little more in depth in certain tops such as urine and urine dip sticks and ie. what high levels of protein can mean from a diagnostic standpoint, but that isn't really our scope of practice so we don't study heavily in those topics/the diagnostic side of things. So the "frothy urine" isn't something that has come up in my studies when I was in school (at least in my program) it's only something I've observed while working :)

@fizzyfuzzy560 a lot of times lab technicians or emergency technicians are trained to give the test but not interpret the results which can only be done by a doctor. So in reality they don't necessarily need to know anything about the conditions. Just be competent in admission of the tests.

I felt incredibly unwell and the amount of pain I was in the first days was insane. My pee turned colors I didnt know it was even possible to come out of a human. Very educational video! I've actually had my family fuss at me saying I should be drinking way more than I do, even stating that the 8 glasses a day is too little. (They never drink water so they're insisting this is done with whatever I want to drink, which is kinda more horrifying). I tried to explain that I can't drink that much. I've tried before in the past and it made me feel sick and waterlogged. I tried to explain that people have different body sizes, weights, heights, activity levels, etc. Their fluid needs will and do vary.

Last week I woke up with 10/10 pain in my back that came as soon as I drank water. I went to the ER and the doctors diagnosed me with a stomach virus. I reviewed my own labs and realized I was over hydrated. When I provided a urine sample the ER doctor said my urine was crystal clear with no signs of infection. I suffered through so much pain until I started sipping water slowly throughout the day.

If you're ever struggling with the colour of your urine after eating a large number of beets don't worry about it it's OK because there is something called Beeturia. The foaming Ness wasn't discussed enough it has to be really foamy all the time. If I don't urinate at least once in eight hours I know my kidneys are silently screaming at me for more hydration. Gets real fun when you are so dehydrated your kidneys hurt

I was upset that they wrote that I’d refused a kidney function test when in fact they hadn’t offered it to me. Since then, I’ve occasionally peed red, and without even taking a look or doing any tests my GP has told me to talk to the chemist and just pick an antibiotic with the chemist! I’m not qualified to make such decisions. What on earth are they thinking?

I'm aware of the foamy being protein in my urine and I take high blood pressure meds and recently have been diagnosed with diabetes and take meds now for it but I occasionally will get slightly darker yellow tinted urine although I drink lots of water everyday. I've heard people talk about the tint referring to water intake but that's not me for some reason. But once again, the slightly darker tint of yellow is only ever so often thus me and my doctor have not been too concerned about it.

Very important to pay attention to your urine. Mine took on a tea colour. I let it go for a while, and turned out I had a rare auto immune disorder, Antiglomerular basement membrane. It had attacked my kidneys and my lungs and landed me in the hospital needing life saving treatment. I'm now having to do dialysis as my kidneys are dead.

Bits in the urine can be a sign of kidney stones or in my case bladder cancer - a tumour was growing in my bladder and as it got bigger it kept shedding it's outer layer.

There was a while in college where I’d poop blood randomly and the doctors never found out why. I didn’t drink, smoke, I wasn’t eating just ramen 🤷🏻‍♀️ but like it looked really scary but I felt fine. I wish I knew what it had been

@Violin MD I think the kidneys are just astonishing in how heard they work efficiently filtering the blood...a true wonder of nature. I really love hearing about very rare and fascinating cases. This would have to be one of your most interesting videos

Dear Dr. Siobhan, when you have time, please learn about Aerotoxic syndrome. It's caused by unfiltered very poisonous oil particles that may fill airplanes cabins when oil seals from engines shafts fail allowing oil to be mixed with the " bleed air " from the compressor. The Boeing 787 doesn't use bleed air and is free from this problem.

When I was in Death Valley (I was there from fall to Spring) when it's hot you need to drink over a gallon of water per day. But not just drink water. You also need more salt than normal to make up for the water loss. You don't feel like you are sweating because the sweat evaporates very quickly. But you are sweating a ton. You also don't feel very thirsty. If you are driving around you need to have 1 gallon of water per passenger in the car. And it is against the law to pass a person broke down on the side of the road, especially on the less often traveled roads. Normally they say it takes 3 days to die of thirst, in Death Valley it can take less that 6 hours.

Years ago a doctor told me that I had to drink a gallon of water a day to keep my lungs clear. I have been battling severe bronchial asthma since birth. I've never been able to drink that much, but I do drink what I can. Is that "old" science?

This is a great explanation, bit disappointed that clear and pale urine wasnt discussed a bit more. I have a genetic condition of EDS and hydration varies. I either do a good few days with water pee okay, whilst other days i hardly drink more than 1 cup a day, for several days. Then i have a super good water day. My output varies, of hardly any wee breaks, great normie rate, and peeing like im pregnant- so frequent. My urine is generally clear or pale yellow, rarely even on bad dehydrated days, will it be a dark bright yellow. As is my eldest child. Struggles to consume water ever since a baby, wee was also never dark. Strong ammonia smells but no complaints of pain or itching, doctors never concerned. We have autism as well and our interoception is faulty so we often fly unfer the radar.

I'm so surprised that you didn't mention beetroot! Beetroot can absolutely colour both poop and pee. If you get red/orange urine that doesn't persist and you had beetroot recently, it might just be that. But if you're unsure, ofc speak to your doctor!

everything you said in this video is completely opposite of what I was told in the two times I was escorted out of the ER because 'Except for all the blood in your urine, there is nothing wrong with you." Plus, no one would tell me how many days in a row one had to urinate blood before they would treat you. I was only able to go 18 days before it stopped and then I'd start the count over again. They kept telling me that a single drop of blood looks horrifying but it's not really bad. But then I asked them how many drops of blood did it take to leave sediments at the bottom of the pitcher I was peeing into to prove I wasn't lying. I knew I had an M&M sized kidney stone but according to the insurance company that until it actually blocked flow or caused an infection it was an elective surgery. They checked me for three cancers before I finally got a bad enough UTI in order to get it removed. Why would they treat me in this manner ? oh, I just have Poly Cystic Kidney disease so it's just diet and exercise until I need dialysis, and the abdominal pain ? just take more fiber.
