Lisa Murphy You got me wrong, I too don't see us getting up to our lower lip in that mess. Militarily we should get out, but we should cut the Saudis off on their funding of groups that are killing Americans, Qatar is another nation that needs to be stopped in funding bloodshed. And for that matter why in the hell are we going to give Iran the Bomb? We need to fight, and dismantle radical Islam, and Gen Flynn has some good ideas other than nuking them all.

what really impressed me about Mr tillerson is his experience of witnessing a man being hit by a hose and killed while working with Exxon. Mr tillerson was a young engineer at the time when he became CEO he opened up the case and compensated the family of the man he had witness being killed. Mr tillerson you are a great human being with good personality

My dad was a civil engineer and I get Mr. Tillerson's personality. Engineers are good analytical thinkers and are good as problem solvers and not interested that much with intrigue. I think he was a wise choice for Secretary of State.

He seems like a great pick for State. He's an ethical man who will switch his loyalty to Exxon to that of the US. He already has Exxon follow American law explicitly. I see no conflict with his CEO position. His experience with leaders and governments in many foreign nations is a plus. He seems strong yet personable and a very capable negotiator. He knows how to get things done. He should be able to advance American interests throughout the world.

It is very disappointing to see all the neo-Marxist comments. This is a future Secretary of State and for good reason. He displays thoughtfulness, listening skills, understanding of international motivations and aspirations, and excellent communications skills. All the while exhibiting an interesting and engaging personality. Just the person to represent the USA while also cleaning out all the socialists at State. I would recommend sending out early retirement offers within a month of taking office.

I wasn't a major Trump supporter but was willing to give him a chance and so far, even though he isn't even president yet, everything he has done has made me a staunch supporter. I am liking the people he is choosing and I have been watching stuff on all of his picks for the various positions. When Rex was mentioned, I remembered hearing he was ExxonMobil's CEO, and my first thought was "oh no. That didn't last long." But I watched some things about him and I changed my mind. I may be proven wrong, but so far I think that the Trump Administration is going to be a great one.

@ballsl959

Yanick Norman A. not sure if you took history at all in school but, Russian US relationship has never been great. Not even good. Only between mediocre and terrible. B. if you think the Russians want to be our friends you must be on something. The Putin system's entire existence depends on protecting Russia from "the evil Americans" - tune in to RT for a few minutes. Its not the US who doesn't want good relations - the current Russian government simply has no other justification for existence with a corruption and failed economy. And civil strife in an uncontrollable state with armed with nukes and capable delivery systems..bad. Better if we get along but not too well.

Yanick Norman We do not forgive, we do not forget. The United States is like a giant ship...we're principly reactive, and peace-loving. And it may be difficult and take a long while for us to change course, but when we bear down on you, you're unlikely to forget it--and changing course quickly again isn't in the cards. Russia has created a monster. It has convinced an entire generation of Americans that not only can we not trust Russia--but also that it is unredeemable as well, and that it is a land if cowardly thieves that act without caution, and principle. Enjoy the next 4 years. Because the chances that the U.S. will ever elect a pro-russian president are 0. Your leaders may have used rhetoric against the U.S. as a tool to rally Russians in the past, but just wait until you see what interference in an election actually looks like.

Widg3t's Widgets absolutely right. I've lived in Russia, I know Russia - its a lawless land of thieves ruled by a mafia masquerading as a government. No morals, no ethical principles, corruption at all levels. Why do you think they always look unhappy - always on guard for the unexpected and Russia never disappoints. They haven't just turned off Americans, they've turned off the world. They have no friends outside of a few despots...guess what its not because of the USA, its because they're assholes.

Nice comments from Rex. The meat of his multi-national corporate leadership is described after the question at: 36:50 - "Exxon operates in a lot of countries around the world, a lot of times these countries are at odds with the U.S. government...Russia...how do you manage relationships with these governments...keep them open for foreign investments?" --- Business people operate within and at the very edge of the laws. ***in his response: "I'm not the US government, I'm an American company, and I will be bound by the laws and follow the laws, but I am not here to represent the interests of the American government." This describes exactly the friction between the US government interests (ie serving the American people) and corporate interests (serving investors). For a secretary of state pick, this is the most backwards and egregious corporate take-over I could imagine. In finance and accounting regulations the appearance of a conflict of interest is enough to call it off...why standards are lower for our elected officials, I do not know... Not to mention how simplistic business leaders can be when they are not forced to consider the non-financial (ie. environmental, social) implications of their business activities...quite the overt power grab!

I think he is a decent choice for Sec State, however regarding integrity (25:30) what does he think of Trump's integrity.
@brssnj54
@brssnj54 8 жыл бұрын
My guess is he thinks Trump has fine integrity. Most people who interact with Trump (in business) have the same opinion as well.
@mdkk
@mdkk 8 жыл бұрын
Actually his business record is problematic, and I offer two examples: 1. Trump has had a long history of underpaying or withholding payments from contractors or vendors for perceived under-delivery of services-- in this example, a small business owner was harmed, see: www.washingtonpost.com/posteverything/wp/2016/09/28/i-sold-trump-100000-worth-of-pianos-then-he-stiffed-me/?.9e205ca16cf6 2. Trump university marketers preyed upon the aspirations of those who were financially stretched. (in my mind this is one of the most egregious examples of a lack of integrity) Of course this lawsuit has been settled. see: www.vanityfair.com/news/2016/06/trump-university-lawsuit-testimony That being said, I think this particular individual is a reasonable Sec State selection given he is not burdened by the usual foreign policy orthodoxy. Having a relationship with Putin and other world leaders in my view is a positive, as I feel we need more cooperation with Russia when it suits our interests.

mdkk What's important to understand is that there's risk involved with any deal, and when lenders approve a loan the cost of the risk is factored into the loan. So if a deal falls through, then no one gets paid the money because the money isn't there to pay. Contractors and lenders aren't these nice angels, they're killers like any other good business person. This happens daily. It's not a big deal. and Trump University was a licensing deal. People paid the licensing fee to use his name, but he had no input on the running of the program. But this is an example of confirmation bias. If you believe he lacks integrity it's easy to find any story you want to back up that. If you believe he does have integrity then you would point to times like when he stopped the robbery of a random bystander or how he opens his Mar-a-Lago golf course to disabled veterans for free once a week. One of the telling examples of a good leader is the loyalty of his people. Trump has almost a fervent loyalty from his people that work with him on a daily basis. You don't see that often, and you can't get that type of positive reaction without treating people fairly and with respect.

I disagree regarding Trump U- to say he has no culpability is a cop-out. For someone who is extraordinarily wealthy to engage in an operation to extract money from those without, is extremely troubling. If what you said is accurate, the honorable thing to do would be to apologize and offer full compensations to the enrollees. That being said, Trump is a complicated figure. His strengths are that he doesn't fit into an ideological box. His views to not mesh with Republican orthodoxy.

Rex Tillerson misunderstands the word "integrity". Please watch this video starting at 21:51, where he begins explaining what integrity means to him. Rex Tillerson does come across as a surprisingly likable and reasonable man for a "big scary oil executive" but his mapping of the word "integrity" has a fatal flaw. Notice, he thinks of "integrity" as placing the organization's interests over everything. He talks about how the highest integrity is when you do something against the interest of your own company division or personal job security in the name of the best decision for the health of the organization. Tillerson's understanding of "integrity" would word GREAT if he thought of the earth and the living creatures on it as "the organization", the Trump Administration as "his company division" and Secretary Of State as "his job". But in repeated interviews, including a lengthy one with Charlie Rose, he tries to downplay and obscure the clear and present danger of fossil fuels in relation to environmental destruction and global warming. That tells us that in his head, one's employer is their "organization", and that no level of organization above that- humanity, the natural world, etc- ever dawn on him. They are just hurdles getting in the way of maximizing the agenda of his employer. And his new employer is the Trump administration. I don't want a Secretary Of State whose #1 focus is ensuring the health of a particular governmental administration. I want a Secretary Of State whose #1 focus is ensuring the health of this world and the people in it, as well as the vast and barely understood ecosystems that took millions of years to create. I don't want a man who thinks "integrity" is spinning scientific facts to keep the agenda of his organization's CEO (Donald Trump) on track. Tillerson's greatest danger is that his disarming and likable personality will mask a horrifically flawed and limited understanding of his broadest human responsibilities. We don't have to think Tillerson is a secret Russian double-agent, or the most evil man on earth. Let's be generous. Let's leave his character alone and be very generous in assuming he's a decent human being meaning to do well on earth. The problem is "doing well" for Rex Tillerson, is defined by a political administration's perceived success, facts are not sacred to him; they are just tools to selectively use when helpful. This type of understanding regarding integrity and ethics is how a man can spend 40 years working for Exxon, and, with a straight face, lecture people from a stage on human integrity.

How would oil prices rise, exactly? The Secretary of State has no control over oil prices, and the reason why they are suddenly rising (after having unprecedentedly dipped) is because the Saudis are cutting production. And let's say that Tillerson magically raises prices: so what? It would be incentive to use more clean energy resources and to even curb general spending.
