Hi Kristina been watching a ton of your videos. I'm from Cali but recently moved to NY. I went through the entire process and got to the final stage. (FYI no one ever informed me that they were no longer hiring California teachers.) Took me 3 weeks and about $25. After uploading my degree, pictures, etc. VIPKID emailed me and said they are no longer accepting teachers from CA. I was immediately kicked out of the system and told GOODBYE! I told VIPKID that though my license says CA, I now have a home address in NY. They told me - sorry we can't change your address in our system. You will need to start over from the beginning, pass all tests again, etc. - and put your NY address in. I was shocked they weren't willing to simply update my address. I have never been so mislead and dumped by a company - what a waste of my time and money!

Jennylyn Chung hey! This happened to me as well and I was very frustrated. I spent so much time preparing and even took the tesol certification and the next day, they told me they aren’t hiring in California. Literally no one told me and I even told the mock student/teacher I was from California and he said nothing about it. So frustrating that no one ever told me and how I was automatically kicked out of the portal haha.

I know we're already linked up and chatting via email but for anyone else who may be wondering....By applying with a referring teacher, you have the support of a veteran teacher who has a vested interest in your success. While VIPKid doesn't mandate any type of action on the part of the referring teacher, I treat my role as a full-time job. I continue to create and update private referral resources (Hiring Guide, videos not on KZbin, my referral communities on Facebook etc) to ensure that my referrals have the tools they need. Hey Kristina, thanks for your videos, they are super helpful! I am a little confused by the eligibility to work in the US/Canada part. I presume that doesn't mean that you actually have to have a US work visa or anything, just that there would be nothing to stop your from working in these countries? I am British, and am normally teaching English in China, but am stuck in England due to the virus and need some work until I can get back. As I've worked in China already, i'd imagine that i'm eligible right?

Hey, Alice! So VIPKid advertises to parents that their teachers are "North American." One draw for parents is that teachers who have lived in the US or Canada may have familiarity with the school systems and Common Core. So VIPKid requires that teachers have "legal eligibility" to work in the US or Canada--such as citizenship or a green card (permanent residency.) If you're not sure if your situation is acceptable, I encourage you to reach out to the hiring team to check: [e-mail].

So I've been waiting over 2 weeks since getting everything submitted. They quickly approved my background check and kicked out my teaching certificate. I uploaded a name change document and passed basic and advanced TESOL. Now, I'm still waiting on that name change certificate, which really is not an issue anymore... I attempted to upload a corrected certificate, but was told that I could not since my documents were still under review. (Not really sure why...). Praying this goes through soon! I'm scared to send another ticket and seem impatient, so I wait.

They both typically take people about the same time to complete (as long as you'd like to spend, but most people do them in 5-10 hours.) I actually recommend that new teachers do both so that they are more attractive to parents!

Hi, Jordan! I'm sorry to hear that. Remember that the purpose of the mock class is to ensure that you (and your tech!) are ready for a real student. So if you aren't able to conduct a mock class, you would likely encounter the same issues with a paying student. Hey there, Natasha! VIPKid doesn't have specific expectations on how a referring teacher supports his referrals, so that wouldn't be an issue on VIPKid's end. How did you find this referring teacher? So I am permanently living abroad (Netherlands) for a year, and plan to stay abroad for the rest of my life. In the past, I have found that many companies and organizations prefer/require me to use my last known U.S. address. I followed that logic and made the mistake of applying for VIPkid using my last address in America (California). I did not realize they were rejecting teachers California at the time. I maintain no home or assets in CA. Is there any way to reach out to VIPkid to reflect that status? I have a family address in Missouri and Tennessee. I have kept an American phone number and bank in Tennessee as well. Could I reapply using one of those other zip codes? I don't want to get flagged. Thank you in advance for any advice. I can speak English well enough because I have an American husband and have an experience of teaching English in South Korea. So my question is are they hiring non native speaker? And where can I go check for the TESOL you are talking about. I am interested in. I have so many questions but I have to start with these. Thank you in advance!

I am from California, but I recently lived in another state and can still use that address. Do you think they'd hire me on using the non-California address?

Hi, Chelsea! It may depend on where you'll be paying taxes and whether you can still provide ID with a non-CA address. As an American independent contractor, you're required to fill out a W9. I learned about this change when I was shooting a promotional video for parents in Beijing in August...they told me to say "two years" and I was like, "since when??" Ha! So at least since August!
