Hello Tina! I think you really summed it up well in the first few minutes. There is a balance in the teaching world. A teacher friend of mine once said "You've got IT or you don't. You can learn IT, but it's really challenging". IT being the natural ability to teach. You can learn all the steps but if you don't have IT, you won't be able to enjoy teaching and the kids feel that right away. Thanks for all your work!

I'm really glad you made this video, it was really helpful. Here's the thing about worrying people will copy the interview/demo and/or mock-I know that worry comes from a good place-nothing about the demo or mock *is* natural and normal. Unless the person interviewing for VIP Kid has no teaching or ESL experience, I think once they get into actual teaching they'll be fine. Both of my friends who work for VIP Kid said once you get past the interview process it's much easier to get into the swing of teaching. This reminds me of my kindy in S. Korea. They had very specific ways they wanted certain things done, yet they wanted it to be "natural." That's why I think there's nothing natural about teacher output in the demo/mock, if VIP Kid has specific boxes they're ticking that have to be achieved a certain way. All that is to say, if being a little scripted in the demo/mock is inevitable, we might as well have the right tools to get there. Thanks for all the input, I love your videos! :)

Very informative. Thank you for your insights. I've been an educator for many years now, teaching multiple languages and levels from kindergarten up through university classes, TOEIC, TOEFL, IELTS, corporate, exam prep etc., all of which have been in live classroom settings. I'm a very animated teacher in my natural setting, and I'm the oldest child in the classroom, always, which has been very effective even with my adult professionals. Finding it much more difficult to harness that energy within a defined space in front of the camera, trial and error currently with my private students. Teaching has always been about learning for me, and I consider myself a student in this process of information/skills exchange, especially considering there is another learning curve in switching to online teaching. There are some bones I could pick with the methods and pedagogy of VIPkid, but I'll save them for another date, because my family's still gotta eat in these strange times. Hello, Well, I had an interview today that I was completely ready for because of your video. My headset worked, the mic worked, my props and backdrop were ready. I could not get into the classroom. I keep pondering about the warm-up slide. It contains the objective vocabulary, hence it's brand new and still unfamiliar. Yet they go straight to using it in sentences? I wouldn't call that a warm-up but rather a challenge! I would spend some time repeating just the target words of each line before acting out the whole of it. Would that be ok?

Hi, Daya! You make an excellent point! Something important to note is that VIPKid takes a "flipped classroom" approach. So, students learn the material and complete assignments at home as a preview to the class with a teacher. So, in theory, the student should already have familiarity with everything. You can approach the warm-up as you choose, but most students would be able to use the sentences!

Teacher Tina, I'm recording my 3-minute demo tomorrow (sooo nervous, but will work extra hard to not let it show)! One of the things that is making me very worried is that I keep hearing that "we will have the ability to circle/underline while doing the mouse/monkey slide." How exactly does this work? (Sorry, I know that's probably a dumb question, but I honestly don't know)! Is there something like a "draw" icon I need to use? After using the same old computer and even older word program for years and years I was finally forced to upgrade to a new and scary fast computer and new software this summer when my old work horse finally died entirely. I'm feeling very technically intimidated and stupid at the moment...😏. Does the feature just automatically work using the mouse once you are signed into the portal? I know that so much of what's worrying me will probably become clear once I start doing, but I don't want my learning curve to happen while I'm actually trying to teach on the demo! Thanks for the help!

Hi, Marie! You have the right idea about a VIPKID classroom; the cursor (where your mouse is pointing) is simply a red marker tool, and the student's cursor is a blue marker tool. Just know that the "student" will not be able to view your cursor...so any time that you want to direct your student's attention, you must complete a motion and release the cursor (then the line or circle will pop up all at once). For the purpose of your short recording that you do on your own program, you'll simply pretend to be using the screen...but now you know what to expect later on! I have my first interview tomorrow night. I'm a nervous wreck! I having been watching many videos on the interview process. There was one video where the teacher said that if you do a recorded demo you have three chances at it but if you do a live interview and it doesn't go well you done no more chances. Is this true? I'm wondering should I cancel and do a recorded demo or go live as scheduled. Can you help relieve the anxiety a little? LOL

Hello, dear! It's true that you're more likely to get "more chances" if you do the recorded one (but do you NEED more chances...that's the questions!). Even if you record three times and there is still something wrong (for example, with technology) you may get another shot. It makes sense from the perspective of VIPKID: for a recorded demo, there's someone at VIPKID watching a video and if she sees immediately that something went wrong with the technology, she can give you another chance (only a minute spent watching you) whereas if you do the live interview, she has committed 30 minutes to spending time with you (troubleshooting technology, for example). So yes, it's less risky to do the recorded option....but the live option gives you much better practice (in my opinion) and if you're confident about your skills and technology, you'll enjoy getting feedback much faster via the live interview. I personally did the live option and loved it. You've gotta do what feels right for YOU! HI Kristina. During the interview demo, I know I am able to circle and draw lines when I model. When I want my student to draw or circle, no one will really be doing it since I will do the recorded demo. Do I need to also pretend to be the student drawing things? For example, for the shoot the ball slide, I may want to do the first one to model, but I want to have the student do the rest. Do I just comment good job after each ball my pretend student chooses and the interview will understand what I'm trying to do and it's okay? Thanks!

Lilash great question! You don’t need to pretend to be the student; just guide and then pretend that your student completed the task. Respond accordingly. I will often put a flattened hand over my eyes and get closer to the camera, indicating that I am watching for a reply. It sounds like you have the right idea. Hi, Teacher Armbrust! 😋 I think you’d be fine to go by something besides Teacher Michelle. I think it’s easiest for the students to remember a teacher’s name when it’s the first name because that’s how we appear in the system (first name with last name initials). You can certainly introduce yourself otherwise and display a sign with your preferred name. VIPKID may not want teachers to share their full last name with students for privacy reasons, but I’ve had teachers choose other names such as Teacher YaYa. I suggest that once you’re hired, you ask VIPKID’s HR department because policies can change. 😊

After passing the interview, the company currently gives candidates 2 days for the "teaching prep" phase (training with a quiz), then up to 6 days for the mock classes, then 2 days to upload documents such as the signed contract. In my experience, some candidates progress quicker than the required timeframe. As soon as you book a mock class you receive the prep materials (lesson and objectives) and can begin preparing. LOL! I just use a tapered curling wand. I pin up the front/top half of my hair and do the bottom first in about inch-wide sections. I spray that layer before I let the rest down. Then I pin up whatever is annoying my face as I do the rest. The hairspray I use to finish it off is Tresemme Touchable Feel. :) I think that my hair curls best after I've slept on it for a night. Kristina, a question regarding the Express Interview recording of the Intro and then the lesson. Are the intro and actual lesson recorded separately and then uploaded to VipKid that way or do you record your intro and then immediately go into the lesson (all one submission)? For example, if my student is scribbling, then I can assume that he wants to use the mouse, so I will redirect him to circle things on the screen. It's uncommon for students to walk away, but I would suggest doing something funny or interesting to try to draw them back in. I compress a lesson as needed, but try other measures first! Hi Kristina, I was invited to do an interview express in January 2019 and I never did get that accomplished. I had Patsy Ann Rivera as a referral and I decided to wait until I could get my classroom to what I thought would be fun, and in the time between January and now have been TEFL Certified.
