The same thing happened to me when I travelled with my kids to India in 2018. The customs officers forced me to remove my thali chain and I did so even if I was a Tamil women. When I said that I did not have enough money to pay they told me to sell some of my jewels to a financier and get some money. What was suspicious was when I went out, a financier came up to me correctly asking if I needed money even though I have not met him before. My husband told me to not give my jewels to anyone and arranged for some money through his friend circle. When I gave this money to the customs officer, he asked me where I got it from and I lied to him telling I sold my rings and got the money. Immediately after saying this his face lit up and he looked very happy. This whole incident was very suspicious so I tried checking his Id-card but he wore it in such a way so that nobody will see his name. When I asked some other officer for his name, they were not ready to tell. These customs officers especially target women who are traveling alone at night. I have a feeling that these officers have a link with these financiers so that they can cheat and earn money deceitfully.

A few years ago, I traveled to Tamil Nadu in India. It was a beautiful country with kind people. However, I had a disappointing experience with the staff at Chennai International Airport. They consistently spoke to us in Hindi, despite our attempts to communicate with them in Tamil. Even when we switched to English, they continued speaking in Hindi. This was very frustrating. I kindly request the airport staff to communicate in either Tamil or English when assisting Tamil-speaking individuals at Chennai Airport.

இந்திய விமானநிலையங்களில் பெரும்பாலும் அதிகாரிகள் நேர்மையாக வரும் பயணிகளுக்கே அதிகார ஆணவ தோரணையில் பேசி மிரட்டி பணியவைப்பார்கள். ஆனால் நிறைய கடத்தல் கார்கள் போதைப்பொருள் கடத்துபவர்களை மட்டும் அரசியல் செல்வாக்குள்ளவர்களை விட்டு விடுவார்கள். அதிலும் இந்தி, மற்றும் பிற மொழி பேசும் அதிகாரிகள் அநேகமாக இலங்கையிலிருந்து வரும் தமிழர்களை இந்தியில் பேசி திணரடிப்பார்கள். இதுவும் வெளிநாட்டு பயணிகளை பயமுறுத்தும் செயல் போன்றதே . நானும் இலங்கையிலிருந்து இந்தியாவுக்கு வந்த போது இந்தியில் பேசுமாறு சில அதிகாரிகள் கேட்டனர். நான் சொன்னேன். தமிழ் நாடு இந்தியாவின் ஒரு பகுதி இல்லையா என ஆங்கிலத்தில் கேட்டேன். ஏன் என்றார் அந்த இந்தி அதிகாரி. நான் சொன்னேன் இந்தி பேச இது மும்பபையோ அல்லது டெல்லியோ அல்ல சென்னை. முதலில் மற்ற இனத்தவரை இப்படி பேச இந்தியில் மட்டும் இப்படி பேசத்தான் உங்கள் நிர்வாகம் உங்களை பயிற்றுவித்திருக்கிறதா என பதிலடி கொடுத்தேன். நீங்கள் பயணிகளிடம் இப்படி ஒரு மொழியில் மட்டும் பேசி அவர்களை சஙகடத்துக்கு உள்ளாக்குவதும் ஒரு இனவாதம் போன்றதே . எனக்கு இந்தி தெரியாது. நீங்கள் முதலில் தமிழை படித்து தமிழில் பேசுங்கள். இது சென்னை என்று சொல்லிவிட்டே வெளியே வந்தேன். இந்தியாவில் இனவாதம் இருப்பதையே இது காட்டுகிறது. சிலநேரம் தமிழ் அதிகாரிகளே அடாவடித்தனமாக பேசுகிறார்கள். அப்போ எப்படி வேற்று மொழிகார்களிடமிருந்த நல்ல சேவையை பயணிகள் எதிர்பார்ப்பது. நான் இவ்வாறு பதிவிட்டதற்காக யாரும் என்னை தப்பாக எண்ணவேண்டாம். இவர்கள் போன்ற அதிகாரிகளுக்கு முதலில் மனிதாபிமானத்துடன் பயணிகளுடன் நடந்துகொள்வது என்பதை பற்றி பயிற்சி கொடுத்து அவர்களை திருத்த இந்திய அரசு முயற்சி எடுக்கவேண்டும். அமெரிக்கா இங்கிலாந்து போன்றமேற்கத்திய நாடுகளிலும் கஸ்டம்ஸ் அதிகாரிகளுக்கு அவர்களுக்கேயுள்ள தடைசெய்யப்பட்ட பொருட்கள கண்டுபிடிக்க அதிகாரம் உள்ளது ஆனாலும் சாதாரண பயணிகளுடன் மிகவும் கண்ணியமாக நடந்து கொள்கிறார்கள். ஆனால் இந்திய விமாணநிலையங்களில் அதிகாரிகள் பெரும்பாலும் லஞ்சம் கிடைக்குமா ஒரு வாய்ப்பு அகப்படுமா என்ற எண்ணத்திலேயே தொழில் செய்கிறார்கள். இது மிகவும் வருந்தத்தக்க விடயம் இதனால் இந்தியர்களுடைய மரியாதை எயார்போட்டிலேயே இந்த அடாவடித்தனமான அதிகாரிகளால் இழக்கப்படுகிறத என்பதுதான் நிதர்சனம்.

The total worth of money or jewellery you can take across international border is 10,000 US dollars. Basically when people of other countries with Indian origin come they will wear jewellery because it's one of the way of grooming themselves. Karthik, when there is a change in international boarder law , it has to be published in the websites and Media. It's not a secret, it's a law that should be posted on relevant media by Authorities As a traveller we don't check for changes in the Border law, only look at if the ticket is confirmed and Visa is Approved. I do not see any reason for the officers demanding money in Lakhs.

Airport handling by officers sometime barbaric, me too having the pain, you should encounter then you will realise the pain. this is not the rule, the way officers handle like barbaric way. we are singapore passport holders holding 40 days visa officially. one idiot officer asked us how can you stay 40 days then i told him go and check your embassy who issued the visa then another officer apologized for the ignorance of that officer. they are not updated and most of them treat very badly to the genuine passengers. some officers still good. but we have to be bold in resist them when we are right. suppose we should pay penalty. pay official and collect receipt or bond the gold and get back when you return. but do not fear. when you show who you are then they will be softened. BE bold in handling such idiotic, barbaric officers.

How India could be 3rd largest economy, if it restricts travelers on the armaments that they wear? Have 0% tax on Gold; Gold jewels making; sale of them will bring tons on revenue and employment in India itself. It could easily complete against Dubai and Honk Kong. Central government must look into custom officers attitude towards tourist. I’m not talking about the gold she was wearing but the way officers handled her. The officials should have written on the passport to view the gold upon leaving the country, rather than making so much difficulty

Customs officers are so harsh and they literally threaten passengers. It would be better if they could display how much gold they can carry or what items they can bring along with them. Also, they can display the customs duty that should be paid on those items. This can be more transparent as most of us won't be aware of any laws or regulations related to this.

Before you travel to any country one should read on what to carry and what not to. It is travellers responsibility. Example : Carrying small amount of drugs will end end up in jail in some countris but in Malaysia it is a death penalty. One cannot say they are ignorant of it.

Every country has its own rules, we as tourists are obliged to find out about these things from the airline ticket sales agency and the embassy of each country. Experience When I returned from India to Malaysia to buy a remote control car for my son, the Indian army ordered me to remove the 12-piece battery that was given free by the seller of the game. I obeyed the instructions because it was the law of their country, fortunately the battery was made in China and was given free of charge so it was not a problem for me...😅

I also have experience on 2009 the airport custom checked my luggage and things when they get know I’m not from there country people and also asking me do I carry or wearing gold and how much in hand , lucky I didn’t wearing nothing and not carrying to much money… because I have informed by embassy when getting visa….so law is law keep updated at all the time especially for travelers who are traveling in..

The same incident was happened to me in Madurai Airport. I wired 16 gram chain since 2018. Presently I am working in Dubai. When I came for my last vacation that time I totally upset with Indian customs officials. Their behavior totally worst they don’t know how to speak with the passengers. In Dubai all the officials giving more respect to the passengers in the airport. Indian customs officers mind is fully collect bribe from passengers who is very innocent.

There no such rules. Greedy officials mislead and misusing the country’s rules and regulations. His pictures must be posted on line and everyone must see his face. His family must see this and not respect him or not allow him to show his face in public.

Iam malaysian indian too... airports are real headache... even if they took our luggage 🧳 from the tracks and put it down on the floor they will ask money... they act very cheap... But outside the airport... they are really good
