Some fantastic polytonality happening (I believe) at the 8:47 mark. Sounds shockingly Rautavaara-like to my ears. What a beautiful piece by Thompson which I've apparently been deprived of all these years! Thanks for sharing this and so many other great composers. It brings me back to a time in my younger days (in the late 80s, and early 90s while studying music comp) when I explored quite a lot of American composers.

Pictures are lovely and well-chosen. Speak directly of Thomson's background.

Actually find them a bit Victorian fo Thomson's time. Some Benton would work better.

@@andrewpetersen5272 -- these pictures are Thomson's actual background, Benton would be another interpretation of that background by a contemporary of Thomson.

@@Wkkbooks Sorry Mark, Thomson's background was a little more modern than that in KC at the beginning of the century. This paintings reflect an era around 1870-90s.

In my personal opinion, is marvellous a so great work like this to listen, by youtube there were always the suite from the film -the river- and also -the plough that broke the plains- well known works from his catalogue.

The key is D Major. There are no tempo indications for the outer movements, just metronome markings (dotted quarter note = 96 in the opening movement, quarter note = 144 in the finale). The slow movement is subtitled Andante, and has a metronome marking of half note = 72.

One would have to be a pianist to know this, but in that last movement he stole "a few measures" from a Beethoven Piano Sonata (Opus 10 # 2 & 3rd mm) which really threw me back in time when I was learning that work while in HS!!!!!!!!

These paintings (except perhaps for the one which appears at approximately the 15 minute mark) have nothing to do with the Hudson River School , even if from that era. They are unidentified and I would hesitate to guess their provenance, except to describe them as 19th c. genre paintings, precursors of painter-illustrators such as Norman Rockwell. I would agree that, particularly with respect to the first movement, they appear to have little to do with Thomson's titles.

As noted in the description, the paintings are by Edward Lamson Henry (1841-1919). There is some significant overlap with the artist's lifespan and that of the composer.
@andrewpetersen52724 жыл бұрын
@@mosaicclassics Not that much. Some Thomas Hart Benton would be better. He was from Kansas City as well.

This music is modern. (The video's images are Hudson River School era. Jars me.) Granted, the music isn't E. Carter. The composer provides here simple music for a complicated era. Carter provides complicated music for a complicated era. Parts of the work are plain pretty, and that's welcomed in modern classical.
