Virgin Utah Mud vs Chevy Silverado 4x4

We got a call for Chevy Silverado stuck in the mud off the Kolob Terrace Road. We’ve had a few days of rain, and the mud has turned super gooey, slimy and slick. They slid into a ditch and had tried to get it out with a Toyota Tacoma but couldn’t. We were able to get them out of the ditch, and back on the road and then pulled through the slimy section to the pavement.
It’s always good to see young people out enjoying an adventure.

I think the driver did pretty well there. Very difficult to maintain tension and distance on a short rope when Matt is slowing and speeding up because of the conditions. Matt's skill and patience and good equipment shine through once again.

Guy don't need all that fuss about his driving skills while being towed in the mud. He didn't run over the rope and didn't hit the tow vehicle. He made a mistake or two. Being towed is a whole new experience for a lot of people but, if you ain't been towed in the mud on a short rope where you are slipping, sliding and the tow vehicle is doing the same you ain't lived yet. It is a new world. Looked like a bunch of nice kids out learning and doing. Their mud driving skills will be a little better after this trip.

its stressful being stuck and getting towed out, we all sit back and watch it on youtube and monday morning quarterback, its a changing environment and people tend to over think and make mistakes, i get stuck in my logging truck often and pushed and pulled out with skidders and track cats, it took years before i could relax,

I live here in Utah I got a call from a buddy that his friend in a jeep was up in the bountiful mountains stuck in the snow. I went up to help and my buddy with his Silverado hit the trial 10 minutes after I did to try and help this guy in the jeep aswell. I drive a 2002 Land Rover Discovery I'm stock right now with ALT. 30's and there were a few times where the snow was grabbing me so I was worried about my buddy because he only had street tires. (Keep in mind the snow is about 3ft deep on the trial and the banks were about 4ft) Anyways time goes by and I free the jeep from the snow bank and noticed my buddy hadn't arrived. I figured he had gotten stuck so on my way down with the jeep I see him in his truck off in a snow bank. We got to work on his truck. I pulled it out and he ended up sliding to the other side of the road in another snow bank. The people in the jeep were returning the favor by helping but some of them had curfew so we decided to leave the truck follow the jeep down and get more shovels/supplies at my friends grandparents house which wasnt far We headed back up with more supplies and a friend from school in his little Nissan saw me so he decided to follow me up and ended getting stuck which was so dumb of him but we got him unstuck 40 minutes later by pushing and using carpet as traction pads because I had nowhere to hook the tow-strap. Now it was time to get my friends Silverado up until we came across a Ford f-150 and Ford explorer stuck in the snow. I pulled both of them out and then got my friends truck. This took about 5hrs in the freezing cold from 5-10 at night. That was the coldest night for us by far I was only wearing Van's, pants, hoodie and a beanie. None of us had snow gear. Since then I have put boots gloves and extra hoodies in my LR. Fast forward about a month and I ended up on the same trial pulling out a 2019 Toyota 4runner. Gotta love it.

Chevy driver did good, added right amt of throttle and turned the wheels the right way. Pretty hard to keep the rope tight with the Banana and the Chevy sliding all over the place with no traction for braking or acceleration!

That is one difficult terrain holy moly. The road is covered in sticky clay while the sides are porous sandy dirt, which makes the vehicle sink easily. Another job well done 👍

Love your channel and content, one thing I’d suggest as someone like you who is a professional and has been in service for so long and who I’m sure has appreciation for his customers is to get a good set of mud flaps so as to not be throwing mud and rocks at your customers vehicle while you are recovering them. Next time the rope gets stuck like that 5:35 pull the pin and slide out the receiver hitch, I've been in that predicament a few times.

@@MattsOffRoadRecovery I have two Bubba Ropes that I use, yea if there was a lot of tension on the rope it wouldn't work, but it didn't look like there was, the rope is going to spring back after the pull, the only way I could see the rope being stretched still is if you did the pull applied the brakes right away and then set the parking brake otherwise it's just going to spring back. I wish I was there I would have bet you $100 I could have got that pin out😁😁

If you have a guy jump on the center of the rope, or stomp on it with one foot so he doesn't fall as another guy is pulling on the pin it should relieve enough tension for the pin to slide out. I'll try it tomorrow on the jobsite, I'll hook my truck to the excavator bucket and put tension on the rope then I'll see if I can get the pin out. I've got a 7/8 x 30 Rugged Ridge rope Amazon special in my truck.

@@bongoyongo6519 Is "Rugged Ridge" a snatch recovery rope? Specifically, is it meant to stretch a lot? The recovery ropes such as Matt uses claim to stretch up to 30%. With that much elasticity, if Matt had, say, 1000 pounds of tension (& corresponding stretch), I don't see how someone stomping on the rope would relieve the tension.

MaxTrax and the like are almost useless in mud or snow. Being hard plastic they're very slick in those conditions and you can't get any grip. You end up just spinning tires and melting the little nubs off of them. They were originally designed with sand in mind and work OK there but that's about it. You'll notice no real wheelers carry them, mostly it's nooby "overlanders" who carry them who don't actually have much off-road experience and think a fire road is 'wheeling'. Yes, years ago I bought a set (4) to carry on one of my Rovers. I also have friends with them. We've all pretty much come to the conclusion that a winch or kinetic strap like Matt uses are 100% more effective. Traction boards are pretty much my last choice these days. And I don't even carry them on my more serious trucks as they're completely useless in the places I wheel them.

@@donhappel9928 They are pretty useful in Australia where we have a lot of sand. Most people carry them on our sand islands and beaches. Sharp beach sand is quite different to desert "dust". Can often pop you out of a hole faster than rigging a tow unless you buried it. Agreed they are useless in the mud.

I had a 93 f250 4x4 with a lock right third member in my 10.25 axle and Maxxis Mud tires, super heavy duty thick sidewalls. It was impressive how much that truck would go through. When the side by side got stuck in the mud, my truck went back there and towed them though the woods. I did put a gale bank’s turbo on the beast. That tire and your setup would have made that mud easy, never did I try them in sand and am unsure how the sidewalls would work when at ten to 12 psi. Great channel. It also had a hydraulic winch for those days when things didn’t work out right and to drag around telephone poles at our range.

The Chevy looked like it had almost no ground clearance. These newer Chevy’s with square wheel wells and very low bumpers aren’t made for this.

Howdy Matt. Having watched all your video's and read a great many of the comments can I suggest a pinned dialogue for each video that goes something like this? My tires are always aired down because 90% of my recoveries are in sand. Deep lug mudders get stuck trucks more stuck in sand. A winch, (not wench) is a weight penalty most of the time for my recoveries. Most people stuck in the mud in the video's got caught by rain. Anybody can get stuck. I've been stuck. Mistakes are the mother of retained learning, innovative thinking and experience etc. Tow balls should never be used with a chain or inflexible strap. Yankum ropes release huge amounts of stored energy gradually and allow the banana to recover rigs many times heavier. Thanks to you, your family and your crew for the pleasant distraction and entertainment during these troubling times. Makes my day when you drop a new video.
