On August 29, 2023, the Virginia State University Trojan Explosion Marching Band performed at the 2023 National Battle of the Bands in Houston, Texas.

Very impressed with the sound, energy, and overall performance of THE TROJAN EXPLOSION marching band of Virginia State University. If you noticed, from the moment they started, there was continuous sound and energy which keeps the spectators engaged & excited! They gave the crowd plenty of energy. This is extremely hard to do for 15 minutes! For the size of the group they had an enormous sound? Someone was worried the band's sound would get lost in such a large stadium, but that didn't happen. They projected well and compensated. Kudos to you! Excellent job!!

Man listen..... as a former resident of Williams hall and an alum of vsugc.....I know the band worked hard!!!! Those nights got LONG in Davis hall!! Blood sweat AND TEARS 😂😂😂 but to be apart of such an amazing music department is unmatched!!!!! Great job Trojan Xplosion!!!!

At this founding, it was named the Norfolk Unit of Virginia Union University. In 1942, the College became the independent Norfolk Polytechnic College, and two years later an Act of the Virginia Legislature mandated that it become a part of Virginia State College.

​@Teebee407 NSU was birthed from VUU. They split from VUU and became Norfolk Polytechnical College. The state merged them with Vstate. They broke away and was named Norfolk State College.
