Virginia Zeani - Louise "Depuis le Jour"

Louise tells the story of a young Parisian dressmaker who longs to marry her suitor, Julien , but is frustrated by the jealous demands of her parents. She manages to leave them and live with him, and In this aria from Act Three she sings of her newly found happiness. When her father is dying she is obliged to return to her parents once more, but at the end of the opera she finally breaks free. The opera dates from 1900.

This is absolutely AMAZING. I had the good fortune to meet her at church during Christmas mass 2010 in West Palm Beach. There was this GLORIOUS voice heard. Simply enchanting. She teaches a young lady whose is going to make a name in the operatic world At 16 she's incredibly good AND very musical.

GB, concordo pienamente, hai perfettamente ragione. Oggi e' impossibile. Per fare delle belle "messe di voce" ci vuole una voce dal suono pieno, appoggiato e libero...fammi qualche nome di oggi...negli ultimi vent'anni non s'e' prodotto un soprano o un tenore con queste caratteristiche, che tu mi insegnerai, basilari. Tutte vocette, anche le piu' acclamate. Praticamente non esiste piu' il "soprano sfogato" con gli acuti, che e' quello che serve per tutto il repertorio da meta' Ottocento in poi. A furia di cantare Rossini e i barocchi e basta, si sono rattrappite le voci, anche quelle importanti ( Blacke, Merritt, Valentini Terrani...i primi e poi a seguire). Ma non tutti sono della mia opinione.

Wow. Great beautiful version. Impressed by her beautiful pronunciation of french in the beginning, I searched for the song's text and followed all the way. Then, having always thought she was Italian, I searched for her bio guessing I would see she had some french influence &, surprise, found out she was Romanian actually. Like Romanians I. Mais ici, il est question de son air le plus connu et, le concernant, de très nombreuses interprètes s'y sont essayé avec des succès divers de Callas à Netrebko en passant par Cotrubas, Moffo, Gheorghiu, L. Price, Sutherland, Caballe,Lott, Freni, Steber et de plus récentes comme Dreisig. Auxquelles s'ajoutent celles que j'ai malheureusement oubliées. Nous avons donc plus affaire à un tube de l'Opéra qu'à une rareté.
