The double edged sword of the upper Midwest. This was one of those flyover migration years. Just as things start heating up, a hard cold front moves in and away go the birds. But it happens and hopefully next year, we will get lucky and the winter will set in much more slowly. Very cool hunt. All the best.
@HokeOutdoors2 жыл бұрын
It was truly eye opening for me to see how quickly the migration progressed up here this season! My experience with the migration in VA has always been more of a trickle so this was completely new for me. Something to learn from though and hopefully I'll be better prepared for next season if the freeze up comes suddenly again

Another outstanding Hunt! Those days are a Waterfowlers dream!! I wouldn't give up so early, even after a good freeze open water and birds can be found, just need to put in the time to find them, and once you do, 6-8 decoys in those small pot holes will pay off big time. Black Duck Decoys are fine any time I would bet there are some in Minnesota, but the Mallards will hang with Black Ducks without hesitation so I wouldn't change a thing there. Getting a Dog?? Nothing better for a serious Waterfowler to have, good Companions in the off season too!! Try and get out at least once more after that freeze if you can, but also keep safety in mind.
@HokeOutdoors2 жыл бұрын
Unforuntately everything is so shallow up here that it pretty much all froze at once since we got a big load of snow along with the sharp drop in temperatures. I tried to find a pocket of birds holding out but the few I found would've been too dangerous to try to hunt by myself and Cory was out of town for the week of the freeze up unfortunately

Great point on the black ducks. We do the same with coots here in Louisiana on cloudy days. Seems to work well with the darker contrast. Enjoyed the video as usual. Stay safe!

Love the water swats! We all love the splat that a big drake makes when he hits the water dead, but sometimes shaking off the skunk is a good thing. I have an idea- T-shirts and hats "Team Water Swat" or maybe "Sluicemasters" I'd be in. Thank you for calling them what they are, Canada geese. (not Canadian geese like so many people who should know better call them)

I'm by no means any kind of expert in it but I hope my mistakes and successes give you a base for where to start and what to avoid. It may be tough depending on where you're from, but if it's possible, I would highly recommend trying to find a mentor who will join you on some hunts during your first season. The only issue I saw was your spinners were locked too tight into the veg. The only time I’ve ever seen that work was when they were in food but never with cattails. I’d push them 15 yards off the veg so birds in all directions can key them.

Any info is greatly appreciated and thank you for giving me that inspiration to start my own vlogs.
@HokeOutdoors2 жыл бұрын
Thanks brother! I appreciate you watching my videos and it's awesome to hear you're getting into documenting your hunts as well! The main advice I would have is to just be yourself in your videos and try to create content that's relatable to other people while doing so. Document as much of the hunt as possible so that someone could put themself in your shoes and envision going on that hunt. Creating a lot of content is a big part of it as well, the more videos you can put out during hunting season the better from my experience
