Hundreds Of CANVASBACKS Worked Our Spread! | Duck Hunting North Dakota

Duck hunting in North Dakota was at the top of my list for waterfowl hunting trips during the 2022 season so when a few of my buddies from Virginia decided to make the trek north I jumped at the chance to head over and hunt with them for a few days. It only took us one evening of scouting to secure permission on two different potholes that both had hundreds of canvasbacks on them along with a mixture ducks and geese. Josh, Drew, and I headed to the smaller pothole with the hope of being able to use a big decoy spread to pull birds to the edge, but early on we realized we needed to break out the kayaks to get to where the birds wanted to be. Luckily once we made the move the action got hot and we were able to witness a diver show like I'd never seen before. Hope you enjoy!

Cool video Thomas. Diver City...love it! I rarely shot Cans on my stock pond leases(central Texas)but the entire Texas coast has the largest wintering population of Redheads in US. The sandy coastal bays has the primary shoalgrass the Redheads and Pintail feed on. Loved watching more great dog work. What a great hunt birds a plenty and terrific dog work.

I was actually lucky enough to get down there about two years ago now and it was a sight to behold with all the redheads! I find it pretty wild that such a large percentage of their population all migrates to the same area. It's a good thing they do though because from what I saw down there and heard from locals and they haven't been seeing much of a migration of other ducks besides teal the last few seasons

Looked like a great time. Get out and do those hunts in the slop while you're young enough to do them. When you get old like me the spirit is still willing but the knees, heart and lungs say nope. Quite a few times when we were younger we pulled a canoe with my dad in it. Now I'd probably be the one in the canoe.

I don't know how anyone could get tired of watching them work the decoys! I find it really interesting that the redheads hens are the only ducks that get that noticeable grey in their head. If it's from old age I would think it would be visible in other species too
