What an incredibly beautiful song! Being my second German Rock band, I get the impression that there is something very special about the music that comes out from Germany, even in this modern era. Or is it just my German blood feeling like it has found its home?
Here’s the link to the original song by Scorpions:

What is even more amazing is that this is after the vocal cord surgery during the making of the prior album Blackout. The initial tracks were done with Don Dokken on lead vocal. It wasn't clear at the time if Klaus would ever be able to sing again at all, let alone as well as he did previously. What an amazing recovery and rehabilitation, that his voice post surgery was even stronger and better than before. Amazing! The rest is history, as they say.

I saw them live about five years ago. They were performing in a small town next to my hometown in Finland at a local football pitch. I wasn't really expecting much. I thought it was gonna be some sad old geezers who would maybe sound a bit like what they used to sound like in the 80s and early 90s. Boy, was I surprised! Even tough they were already in their seventies, they looked like they were in their early fifties, they moved around the stage like they were in their late twenties and they sounded better live than they ever have sounded on record! I was truly blown away. And even when it started raining in the middle of the gig, the audience stayed there in the muddy field, cheering and singing along to their beautiful songs.

It is pieces like "Still Loving You" that makes us 40+ year old listeners ache for the days of the old bands. Can you imagine a modern band releasing a track with so much soft parts as in this? Or such a simplistic bass-line as The Scorpions' "The Zoo"?

This is one of those songs that the live version (off of "World Wide Live") is really the best version. One thing to keep in mind about early hard rock and metal singers is that they weren't all rough and growly like today, they were often almost operatic. Singers like Klaus Meine (this singer) or Ronnie James Dio, or Rob Halford or Steve Perry (and many others). They were usually singers with a lot of power and a lot of range in their singing (something that I actually feel like is lost in today's metal where its more about who can growl the best). The idea was to have a singer who could hold his own against the loud music and "virtuoso" guitarists.

I had the pleasure of meeting the band, and Michael as well in NYC in 1985. They stayed at the hotel where I worked while they were promoting World Wide Live. One day coming in from the train to work I saw Klaus walking ahead of me, black leather from head to toe in the sweltering July city heat no less!. I caught up to him and explained who I was, and we walked together to the hotel talking about the band and the tour. I'll never forget that walk! I was able to meet them all together as they left and got autographs, because I had kept my promise to my manager not to pester them during their stay! Amazing musicians and people!

❤Absolutely loved this!❤ Thank you! Welcome to your first 'power ballad'. Maybe the best of all time. Scorpions were my favorite band during my teen years! This style of song composition became widely copied and heavily used during this era. In large part due to it being a format that was more radio friendly/accessible for a hard rock/metal artist and appealed just as much or more to female gender as well. Record companies liked the power ballads because they were more likely to be successful hits. Guys liked them because the girls liked them and helped create common ground musically and, of course, also helped to set the proper mood. I've seen the.Scorpions live multiple times, but my favorite was always this tour, which was recorded and later released as the album World Wide Live. I was just 15, almost 16 at the time. It sounds silly, but as I watched your reaction and listened to your comments, I found myself moving between joyful tears and celebratory fist pumps. I feel music so strongly that it's hard to find others who can appreciate and experience it on the same level. Of course, you also understand it and are able to express it from a compositional perspective, better than I could. I'm so glad you recognized the greatness of it and that you enjoyed it so much. I'm curious, if you had listened to this much earlier in your musical journey when you were still adjusting to the sound of rock guitars and other instrumentation, would you still have been able to enjoy this as much? I think you are now able to recognize this more like a strong dramatic movement in a classical piece. Some people actually come to the conclusion that you can actually draw some strong similarities between the two. You've come so far. It's been quite a fun journey to take with you. Thank you.

I go to concerts every month and it’s amazing how most have been able to keep most of their voice after 40-50yrs. Some have lost it but expected with their singing style. But his vocal cords haven’t stiffened much all these years.

I admit I have not the slightest idea about musical theory and can't read notes, but it was still really fascinating to listen to you dissect the song, and watch the joy on your face as you discovered this wonderufl piece of music. And if you ask me, this is not even their best song, even if it's one of their most known ones. Neither is Wind of Change. If I had to choose from that incredible amount of incredible songs, I would probably choose In Trance, and We'll burn the Sky. Those songs just blow you out of the water. Great analysis of what has to be my #1 power ballad of the 80's! I've always loved how this song builds, Klaus' vocals (going from very soft & almost a whisper, to the powerful, soulful belt we know and love). I would highly recommend The Sails Of Charon as another Scorpions reaction/review. It's more steeped in their 70's sound (a bit more progressive, but still rock/metal). Love your channel.

I never thought I’d be watching ANYONE sitting in a studio full of harps, etc that didn’t know The Doors and also would be playing a Scorpions song on her harp. I am a guitar player and understand all the theory as she plays (non musicians might not) so that is very interesting to me. KZbin is seriously wonderful for music and many other things. If you would like a treat, try some earlier Scorpions with Uli Roth on lead guitar... My favorites are "In Trance" and "Tokyo Tapes". There's also the transitional album "Lovedrive" from 1979. I consider this a transitional album because Uli Roth had left the band and Mathias Jabs was just joining the band while Rudolph Schenker's brother Michael as filling in for some of the sessions. Michael Schenker is a an enigmatic and heavily influential guitarist, primarily from his time in UFO (another great band) as well as his own band, the Michael Schenker Group.

Thanks so much for this review! I've loved the song since it came out in my college days. You could hardly walk across campus without hearing it from people's dorm room windows. I loved catching it floating hauntingly on the breeze on chill autumn nights, with the moon overhead, the scent of wood smoke air, and the turning leaves all around! 🍂🍁🎃🕯🌛 I'm glad that I got to experience what I call "the German invasion" in the 1980's. In music we got Nena, Falco and of course The Scorpions. "Mephisto" and Wolfgang Petersen's "Das Boot" were big in the movies. In literature there was Michael Ende's "Momo" and "The Neverending Story" (book and film). It was a lovely time for me! Speaking of Falco and Nena, they were exceptional in the U S. because unlike The Scorpions, they sang in German (though Falco mixed in a lot of English phrases as well). There were English translations of their songs, but the big hits were the German originals. Have you covered any of their songs?

So I am expanding across so many boundaries. I am a black man, listening to a heavy metal song being analyzed by a Classical music harpist and I am not thrown so far off because we are all making this effort to connect to a piece of music together. Her thinking of this, from her very unique perspective, adding her extensively knowledge to this is composition is beyond fascinating. Seeing her dainty and delicate self, her timeless pearls and lithe fingers extrapolating the notes is such a universal vibe to me. I could honestly say, I could have a conversation with anyone who is trying this deftly to understand someone or something outside of their normal space.

Very well said. I’m a white woman who grew up to this song and I’m still fascinated by this and her. One of the most respectful, intelligent, educated and talented channels I’ve ever seen. She’s a gem. And good luck to you on your rock history! The 80’s are great but the 90’s are my favorite!

Your analysis is spectacular. If this is one of your favorites, one of mine too, you will really love their song Send Me an Angel. It's a real masterpiece. The Scorpions have tremendous musicianship.

Amy, you might enjoy watching the live version of this with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra (2000). I really think you will appreciate the woodwind instruments bringing an extra depth and texture. And also really enjoy the fact the Scorpions weren't precious with the guitar solo section. They let the orchestra spread it's wings and do something unexpected. I embedded the video. You don't have to elaborate further if you don't want to. Just enjoy. There's even a harpist. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nIGlg6Wia8qGrZI I was watching your facial expressions as you were looking at the sheet music. You were smiling in a way that seemed like the sheet music itself told you a joke or was enjoyable to read in some way. I like when musicians can just read the sheet music and can see the plot of the story just on the page. The notes defining an idea. At that moment I could see the wheels turning in your head. It was fun. I don't know why I never noticed it before. Two great things about the scorpions. One is no matter what song they are doing, you know it's the Scorpions. They have their own undeniable thumbprint. Like AC/DC. Second one is, they are a Rock band, and play music that is easily accessible to an American listener. But it does have a very European ground floor to it. Also exquisite German engineering. Sorry three things. If you ever get the chance to see The Wall live from Berlin the Scorpions do show up there. They do a couple cameos in the performance.

I also love the way dissonance is incorporated in this song. I love dissonance packed inside of diatonic chord progressions so it doesn’t sound dissonant. The song “eyes of the world” by Grateful Dead is build around a descending four note chromatic line from E to C# but is surrounded by lush major seventh chords so it’s not immediately apparent to the listener. This a beautiful song and thank you for bringing so much insight to it.

I am a big Scorpion fan, saw the Love at first Sting tour twice. Played Tokyo Tapes until I wore out the grooves. Love this song, another is In Trance. As a musician myself, their best musical song is from their former guitarist Uli Jon Roth Sail of Chiron is a monster song musically, even when Uli slows the lead down when he’s teaching it of a video it is still amazing

Right there with you! Wore out my record of Tokyo Tapes back in my teens. Bloody brilliant album. And In Trance and We'll burn the Sky knock me off my feet every time, not matter how often I listen to them. It's really hard to pick a favourite Scorpions song, there are just too many incredible songs to choose from, but if I had to choose - those two would top the list.

So awesome that the music I loved, growing up, was seen by a lot of grown ups as just a bunch of noise. Now even classical musicians can see that it was/is great music. What people don't know is that there are actually many guys in rock bands were trained in classical music growing up and just translated it into a different type of music. Also, Geoff Tate from Queensryche and Sebastian Bach from Skid Row ended up as Opera singers after their bands broke up. As did Mike Patton from Faith No More. Oh, Ronnie James Dio was offered a scholorship at Julliard

One of my favorite songs ever. I had no idea what dissonance was as a girl or any music theory at all, but I knew what I heard was anguish and resolve, and it sucked me right in! It's just so beautiful, and I could tell in the first few seconds that you absolutely got it. I love learning the theory behind the emotions portrayed. ❤

Absolutely loved your reaction and analysis. A great song from a great band. I am really happy you enjoyed this so much and that it has made your list of favorites. I was first introduced to them in the late 70s when they were a lesser known (in the US anyway) hard rock band, who then became much more widely known in the 80s onward. I didn't personally own any of their albums back then, but I remember hearing them a lot amongst one subgroup of my high school friends that were obsessed with the hard rock of the time (I don't remember calling them metal back then), whereas I was into much broader types of music in which hard rock/metal was just one of many of the many types of music I listened to.

@@Hartlor_Tayley Yeah, from the 80s onward their radio tunes is about all I ever heard. I did have a girlfriend in the 90s who was really into them, so I may have heard some of their deeper cuts when driving around in her car, I don't remember specifically. I do know that whenever I would hear them I would always like what I heard and had the impression that they were a really good band. But for whatever reason, I never purchased any of their albums, so apparently I never liked them enough to purchase their albums myself, not sure why other than I didn't buy albums from every band I liked.

@@LeeKennison same here. I heard them back in the seventies, I knew this guy a proto metal head I suppose and he had a couple of their albums that he made me borrow. Good solid rock band and as I recall my girlfriend really liked them a lot and made a tape for the car. so big points there.

@@Hartlor_Tayley Very similar to my experience, other than it was a small group of hard rock/metal enthusiast friends who I occasionally hung out with. We had some crossover of bands that we really liked, such as Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Montrose, and Led Zeppelin. But they were more into bands like Judas Priest, and at the time I remember I liked it better when they played the Scorpions instead. I have since grown to appreciate bands like Judas Priest more, but certainly not to the point of becoming a regular listening habit. I wish I could remember if my friends were calling the harder edged bands metal back then in the 70s. They probably were and I just don't remember. I mostly lost track of these particular friends after high school.

Thanks for this wonderful reaction and analysis. The Scorpions are one of my absolute favorite bands, together with the Beatles and Pink Floyd. I'd be glad if you include some more of their music on your channel. Some songs I'd recommend to you are: Fly To The Rainbow (a 9-minute psychedelic rock piece) The Sails of Charon (a heavier song with a neoclassical guitar solo that influenced Yngwie Malmsteen a lot) We'll Burn The Sky (a 6 and a half-minute piece, Uli Jon Roth, their lead guitarists at that time, once decribed as a sort of mini symphony) Holiday (another beautiful ballad) Blackout, Rock You Like A Hurricane (classic Heavy Metal) And while a lot of Scorpions fans don't like it as it goes more into a pop rock direction, Wind of Change is still a beautiful song.

To the "fans" that dislike Wind of Change: This song is historical in meaning, not just to the band, but to the world. Who cares if it sounds like pop music. The importance of a West German band singing about being in Russia, on the other side of the wall, is absolutely amazingly historic in scope. The song basically helped to define the end of the Cold War. 51:25

One of my fav songs. Love watching you break it down on the harp. As a guitarist, I can tell you….the arpeggios with the descending bass notes look a lot easier on the harp. Those “harpsichord “ sounds were root -fifth power chords on the guitar, with a lot of gain…a staple of rock guitar.
