Kage Maru: Virtua Fighter Lore

Kage Maru, is possibly the most believable ninja in any fighting game. Most ninjas in fighting games tend to have supernatural powers or teleportation. Though fighting game ninjas tend to have a technical, and versatile fighting style, Kage being no exception. I wish there where more ninja’s that where grounded like Kage Maru, except for maybe Shadow’s Kakuto style.

Looking at Kage's background, who he's beaten, how many tournaments he's won, what his ultimate goal is and since it's part of the main plotline in the story (save or end his mother's life and shutdown J6), he comes across as the main protagonist of VF.

Yes he certainly does. In a way I feel as though there are at least 3 main protagonists in VF: Akira, Jacky, and Kage. Akira's character design and fighting style made him marketable as a main character, Jacky was originally intended as the main protagonist during the game's early development, and Kage's story has many parallels with Jacky as well as being Akira's main rival.

The problem I have with Akira is that he's only there to win the tournament, be the best fighter and when he loses he just trains harder not to lose. He has no real personal reason for being there and I don't think J6 is ever once brought up in his story. I always thought the main protagonists should be Kage, Jackie and Sarah, I figure she would at least want to get payback for what J6 did to her.

@@Rick-Raven Point taken. I don't disagree with you there, but for better or worse Akira is the face of VF and will probably always be considered the poster boy. Concerning his story, there does seem to be some sort of supernatural underpinning to his quest to discover true strength. In a round about way what he seeks and what the J6 seek are one in the same, but their motivations are obviously different. There is some evidence that Akira may be internally battling some kind of spirit or temple god that I haven't been able to get to the bottom of. I need a Japanese interpreter to figure it out :/.

So glad to see this series resume. What I wanna know though is, how exactly does the Dural transformation/de-transformation/re-transformation thing work? Is it like, Dural is a cyborg that can have her humanity toggled back on, but she'll die of organ failure without more cyborg parts, but putting those parts in takes away what little humanity she had left? It's like the Theseus' boat argument, how much of something is the same if you replace every part?

I love this series. It gave me a new perspective and story of a great fighting game series I once took for granted. It's story and lore aren't told in the games like most conventional fighters, but it's all still great to learn about. Thank you so much for doing it, this work could not have been easy. Kage-Maru is one of my favorite characters in the Virtua Fighter series alongside Aoi and Vanessa. I really like how you dived into his backstory and fighting style as it would allow newcomers to familiarize themselves with him. Also, it's really cool that he is voiced by the composer of the games as well as having a good singing voice since his character song was sung by him.

Oh dang, someone who's won more than one tournament! I didn't think that was gonna happen in this series. On one hand, it's interesting that characterization always seems to play a strong role in who wins the tournaments (Lau dedicated years of his life to honing his craft and saw it rewarded in 1, Akira learned from his mistakes of the previous tournament and saw the fruits of his self-improvement in 2 and Kage Maru's dedication to his mother gave him back-to-back wins). However, another part of me feels that Virtua Fighter was setting itself apart from the other fighting games by not playing perennial favorites and Kage Maru's second victory doesn't feel quite as magnificent, since less came of it. Still, the guy's story is good and I like that he's a juggernaut of justice without losing his humility; also like the possibility that he respects Akira to some degree even though he's got such big and personal fish to fry in his own life. At the risk of being told, "He's just a Kage Maru rip-off," Kage Maru reminds me of some of my favorite attributes of Tekken's Yoshimitsu, specifically their penchant for justice and helping people despite their chosen trades being so well-crafted for villainy. Between their shared adherence to Buddhism (to whatever degrees they do) and enjoying of mundane things like mahjong and sumo, I'd like to think these two would get along to some degree or another, despite Kage Maru preferring "don't be seen" and Yoshimitsu mastering "confound with outward appearances" (not that he can't or hasn't used traditional stealth either).

It would be too difficult for TN to make Kage playable in DOA games, because P+K+G in VF is used as stances, parries, wall moves, etc. In DOA P+K+G/H is used for taunts and the new S button. Someone like Aoi or Wolf could work in my opinion.

The inevitable mention of Dural here makes me hope for a future video that covers Vanessa, since apparently later on she gets involved in that too - although I guess it might take a while, since the characters from earlier in the series appear in more things... Maybe at some point Dural will get a video of her own and cover some of that ground? Great work BTW. The mention of mass-produced Durals brings to mind the use of a similar concept in the Project X Zone games (I think they called those Stone Durals?... I's been a while, but I think some models there also referenced the Vanessa versions, although the moves were all based on the classic one).

Does Virtua Quest play out in a future where the Judgement Six win? That's how..... uh, main kid (I've never played it) is learning those techniques, right? Because they're, like, cyber copies of the Virtua Fighter cast? Which is the EXACT THING that Judgement Six is seeking to do - copy the fight data for all the fighters to implement them in their Dural androids, right? Where did the cyber data for them in Virtua Quest even come from if not Judgement Six's work throughout the main fighting series? Is Virtua Quest secretly genius? (O.O) Also - just an observation - why are _so many_ Ninja villages always being destroyed in fires? Using some _Ninja Gaiden_ footage for that part really made me realize that that happens a lot :P You'd figure that if one ninja is a super talented warrior, a whole village would be near-impossible to take down, yet if someone so much as drops a cigarette - _WOOOOSH!_ Kiss a whole ninja clan goodbye! We see it happen again and again - the Virtua Fighter series, Ninja Gaiden/Dead or Alive, Shinobi, anime like Ninja Scroll, Tenchu.... heck, we've even seen a burning village for Sekiro already in it's reveal trailer. Ninjas just can't catch a break, man - it must be a nightmare to get home insurance if you're a ninja (^-^) Terrific vid as always. When/If there's a Virtua Fighter 6, I hope Sega gives as much attention to it's story and lore as you are in these videos

Oh nice video man,welcome back. Hopefully we'll have another VF in the future,i think SEGA is cooking something for us. and speaking of which,i think they need to make the game visually appealing ,and revamp the bound system because it looks ugly in VF5. And it must have a an identity and targets the competitive scene,i mean look at SCIV,people were hyped for a week and two,but then they all went back to Tekken because it wasn't that serious of a competitive game...

@@VirtuaBros It sold well i guess,the online scene is decent but not as everyone expected,it doesn't seem to catch the attention of alot of FG players (including me). As i said,SC has a problem with it's identity,do they want it to be a serious game with good balance,or they want it to be some fan-service bs (even DOA stopped doing that with DOA6). The thing i hate the most is the stupid custom creations in Ranked,i think that was the biggest complain for alot of players. in conclusion,many people left the game and went back to Tekken or SF xD

I hadn't watched this video, loved it. Every time I watch something like this I can't help to feel grieved by the fact that this franchise was the only one I ever enjoyed in fighting games, it is just sad that my first Virtua Fighter was the very last and that also it seems to be my fucking luck that there never was a virtua fighter 6, it just breaks my heart, I've tried my hand at other fighting games, but I just don't give a fuck about the characters.

Thanks very much man I'm glad you enjoyed it. I truly understand how you feel because I feel much the same way. But listen: don't give up hope. This is coming from a Shenmue fan who is only now after almost 18 years getting Shenmue 3. If you love something enough and never give up hope miraculous things can happen. There is still plenty of VF out there to enjoy in the mean time :)

Virtua fighter is famous a lot in the middle east, because of the anime. The anime holds a special place in Arabs heart and many love the games due to it
