Virtual DJ Tutorial - Cue Point Labeling Ideas /// This week’s Virtual DJ tutorial is all about setting cue points, and more importantly labeling cue points. When it comes to learning to DJ and teaching initial DJ lessons, one of the first things to learn is setting cue points. Setting hot cues is integral to efficient workflow and will help with better mixing and ultimately becoming a better DJ.
But setting cue points is just the first step. If you want to better yourself at cue point mixing, labeling your cue points is the next step to take after that. In this video I’ll show you how to set cue points, label cue points and also give a few dj tips and tricks on the type of information I use for labeling, such as noting verses, breaks and outros.

Man, THANK YOU! Small rant: There are too many VDJ tutorials that assume the watcher has basic knowledge of the topic. (which is fine unless you DON'T have that missing bit of basic knowledge) In my case I was searching "How to set cue points" and the results of that search will tell you WHY and WHERE to set cue points but never HOW. This was the first I've found on the subject that takes the few seconds needed to include that info (the HOW) too. I'm genuinely grateful. Thanks again.

I know I'm a few months late but I've developed another way of using labels. Because I loop in my intros, I set cue points at 32, 64, 96, 160, and 224 beats before the start of the break where I'll be mixing out and label them Beat Sync, Beat Sync 2, etc.. These give me five chances to preview a mix and also tell me where in the song I can start the Loop Intro (which has its own cue point) of the next song so I'll be right where I need to be when it's time to mix out (which is also a cue point).

These are definitely great ideas but I think they would be time consuming to someone just starting to adopt the practice at present. I do think this has great update possibilities in the software. Maybe suggest adding a shift right click drop down that could allow for a prefix menu with common cue names be added. Adding the ones you have already outlined could be a powerful future feature.

VIrtual DJ has this ability. You can create a custom set of cue points that when each button is clicked it will always be the color you predetermined and Label "If you choose"

Great video..! One thing to add - color coding. I don't need to lable beats as the colors tell me. Green = 8, yellow 16, orange 32, blue 64...

I recently migrated over from Serato Pro, tho I do like Serato's FLIP feature. Is there a feature like that in Virtual DJ?

This is where VirtualDJ has some deep flaws in usability and ease. In SeratoDJ even scratch you can change the color of the cue point right from that main gui and not some POI. This literally cuts back on prep time as songs have multiple cue points. While VDJ2023 has come a long way, it still has some overly complicated way of doing things. The poor column alignment in the browser window is another. Numbers are aligned on the right, text on the left. So when you have to expand a column in the middle of gig, you screw all the other alignment. In Serato, everything is flush left and pulling a column apart doesn't jam the other columns. VDJ is very powerful but the gui is still not where it needs to be. Serato GUI is still superior because it is simple.
