In multi-step equations is the order distributive property, if there's multiplication available, then like terms then solving after you have no more simplifying to do? Using GEMA backwards? Just wanted to confirm I had it right
@LightandSaltLearning
@LightandSaltLearning 3 жыл бұрын
Great question! The tricky part about multi-step equations is that you have to SIMPLIFY and SOLVE in the very same problem. When simplifying (that's OBEYING the symbols), you follow GEMA. Distribution is a part of that; it's a way of multiplying. When solving (that's working to get the letter alone), you work GEMA backwards because you are literally "undoing" math. Does that make sense?

Hey Kate, I'm a little confused by the last one. When I plug -51-(-89) into my calculator I get 38 not -140. Where am I getting mixed up?

I don't understand how on #11 the -18r + r = out to be -17r. Is it because the r acts like a 1? ty
@LightandSaltLearning
@LightandSaltLearning 6 жыл бұрын
GREAT question! The r itself isn't a one- we don't know what r is- he might be 3 or 17 or even 4/3- but we do know that WHATEVER r is- there's only one of him. Assume that when a variable doesn't have a coefficient (a number out front) that its coefficient is 1. -18r+r is the same as -18r+1r

For the life of me idk what I am doing wrong to continue getting these COMPLETELY WRONG!!!! Especially the 5 step ones with getting the variable across the equal sign. I’m following the steps to the best of my ability but I just continue to get wrong answers. It’s so frustrating cause I know I’m following it correctly. I’ve been working oh this same lesson for about a day & a half now. 😮‍💨 Maybe the GED just isn’t for me

No way. I've never met a student who couldn't do this. We just need to find a way that works for you. First thing, solving multi-step equations is a very complex process, like learning to drive. You don't just hop in a car, get on the freeway and start driving. You isolate certain skills at a time, adding skill after skill as you progress, with a skilled driver next to you, until you get to the stage where you're putting it all together. And even then, it takes a while of you making mistakes and getting corrected (like check your blind spot before you merge. You almost hit that car!) before you can do it naturally without thinking. That is how complex skills develop, piece by piece, and with less and less errors until you're eventually fluent. You don't just watch someone drive a few times, then take off yourself alone. All that being said, did you jump on the freeway, or did you work on all the Math Crash Course Alg lessons that come before this? www.lightandsaltlearning.org/1-algebra-essentials If the answer is no, go back and learn the individual pieces. Go through the lessons and practice each one. In the virtual class videos and example problems, I'll be the skilled driver by your side until you can drive solo but YOU must practice each skill, not just watch me do it or you'll never be fluent. If you did do that and it still isn't working, we may need to tweak your learning strategy to better suit your needs. Please email me at lightandsaltlearning@gmail.com for assisstance in doing that.

@@LightandSaltLearning thank you. I’ll add your email to my contacts. I’ve started from unit 1 and have been working my way through. Started around the end of June. I think what my issues include speeding through whats “easy” and not reading the signs. I’m about to tackle these work sheets again and try and take my time. If anything I’ll for sure email you. Thank you Miss. Kate for responding.
