I'm so glad you mentioned that ad. That ad has stuck with me since 1995 as one of the great examples of "what the hell were they thinking trying to sell a game with this?"

Oh my god, a two page spread with two postage stamp sized pics in the corner. What were they thinking? “We got nothin.” Maybe cause it’s the mid 90’s and boogers and farts flew then.
It's humorous that the baseball title goes for rotoscoped realness for the batter but silly expressions almost everywhere else. Nice vid as usual.

Having to hold your face up to the Virtual Boy over a full eighteen holes of red-tinted golf sounds purgatorial regardless of if the game's a solid depiction of the gentleman's game or not

It’s really worth trying. It is a very impressive game. You will be amazed. I am not at all a golf addict and it really stands out as an impressive game among a group of games I like.

Well it's just really a shame that the virtual boy didn't last long enough for the head mount attachment to be released. Oh well. Even if it had been released, it would be one of those rare attachments that you can't get for under like $300...

I wanna point out that Virtual League Baseball is one of the most common virtual boy games that was ever made. I once found FOUR unopened, sealed cases of 12 copies of the game at a Goodwill store, for $2 a case. For clarity- that's 12 sealed, brand new copies of Virtual League baseball for $2. I bought all 4 cases, only cost me $8, figured I'd be able to at least sell them for $2 each on ebay. If I'd held onto them, I'm sure i'd be able to make at decent profit off my purchase, but at that time, the market was absolutely flooded. I sold them all to a friend of mine who had a giant games collection for $10 and lunch.

I know it sounds like torture playing 18 holes on VB, and this might not work due to the capture, but back in the day I would take my VB off the stand, lay on my back, and have the unit rest on my face. Yes you will look like you wore a half face google mask once you remove the VB, but more comfortable then the sitting position for long game sessions.

It's a miracle Nintendo even managed to sell anything back in the day, they had to have had the worst and strangest marketing campaigns I've ever seen for games. I think it must have caught up to them in the N64 era because they never could sell the N64 like the PlayStation sold.

So glad to hear about AI cheating in single player competitive games. NES Baseball was hairpulling at times. Only one such game I found enjoyable were Quake 3's default bots.

At 2:04 That wide-angle static view of the baseball field with the itty bitty players is some real Intellivision grade shite. And the audience appears to be made entirely of black and gray beach balls, like it’d be a placeholder graphic in a better game. This game is something like “Here’s your VB dev kit, we need a baseball game in one month.”

It's so sad that the red graphics look so horrid that people actually have to use the white graphics instead. What were they thinking?! Why not just use white instead of red? I also honestly don't think it should have increased the price too much if they had made it in color. They should have just made the graphics in color & released it with the head mount attachment that never ended up getting released. I think it would have done much better.

The advertising executives working on video game accounts during the 90's, in desperate, sweaty pursuit of "edgy" teenagers whose tastes they could not understand, produced some of the crudest, grossest and least appealing advertisements in the history of the medium.

I'm a little surprised you had to go this far in to find a truly bad game (as opposed to a ambitious but flawed one). Everybody talking about how the virtual boy was doomed to fail makes you think that there was nothing good on there besides Wario Land. Of course, being good and being good enough to justify eye strain is a completely different matter
