I know this society. In 1990 I had been to meghalaya. I did a ncc track from ladmaflang to bangla border via cherapungi. It is a beautiful state of beautiful people. I still remember adventure I had over there. Miss you meghalaya.

I'm from shillong and meet many garo and khasi ppl in day to day life... I noticed that many khasis and garos have some facial and cultural similarities... Even tho garos are Tibet-Burman and khasis are monkhmer... They still have many similarities both culturally and facially...

All North East India States follow same rules from ancient times. My grandfather times this custom common they should prove their eligibility as a groom if fails they rejected or used as a servant. My grandfather also came to my grandmother house as customs. We stay with my grandmother she is younger in her siblings and her property. But my father times and our generation all are changes. I'm from Chandi Thakur Para, Sephaijala District, Tripura.

Kerala also used to have the same matrilineal society but things are different now. The basic idea is to keep the family wealth inside the family. Otherwise, after marriage a huge sum of money leaves the family in terms of dowry or the gold ornaments etc which are given to the girl. In this arrangement, the wealth remains in the family. I am no anthropologist, but maybe this was the original reason why this system was devised. Even after all this the male in the family keeps things under his control ... and that is the mama (the maternal uncle) ... even in Kerala, the Mama is the head of the house and the one who calls the shots. Good to see that some tribes have managed to survive the Evangelical onslaught ... however, it appears from your videos, that the Christians also have not completely lost connection to their roots in animism. As always, great job by you and your team!! Keep it up.

I don't know about Kerala but in our society we do not practice dowry, we don't gift golds. In fact, the whole NE is dowry free zone. And no, the tradition is not followed to keep the family wealth. We simply passed it on to females because our brothers and fathers does not want their sisters and daughters to be homeless if anything happens to the husbabd. It is done in order to protect their sisters and brothers and it doesn't relate anything to wealth. We are never after family wealth. 😴
