let's do the math, canon 80$ almost 2:30h of video shooting, smallrig 2x40$=80$ almost 4h of shooting. if it's the only problem "working time" with smallrig, and other problems don't appear during exploitation, I don't think the batteries are bad

Its not always cost, but value and the value comes in when shooting events and not having to change out batteries as frequent in fear of missing a moment. That could cost a lot more than the difference in battery price. I will keep one as a backup when I'm in a pinch though because the usb-c can come in handy.

Hi. I picked this battery up earlier this year so this video raised my curiosity. I tested the SmallRig battery immediately after fully charging it in a Canon charger. At ~500mA constant current discharge (I think this is reasonable) over about 3.5-4 hours I was able to get 2053mAh (compared to 2400mAH claimed on the label). Now, I wanted to compare this to a Canon LP-E6NH so I took one of those I've had maybe 1.5 years and tested it at the same ~500mA. The result was 1886mAh (less than the SmallRig! and the 2130mAh rating on the label). Result: The Canon battery delivered ~89% of rated and the Smallrig ~86% of rated. I'd say subjectively that this is fine for me. Disclaimer: This does not account for different discharge curves at higher currents, but for just photos (not video) overall current draw shouldn't be too high. Additional tests at 1A-3A current could help reveal more too but I don't have the resistors on hand for those tests.

What's appealing about this, however, is for things like backpacking for landscape photographers. If for whatever reason my batteries drain faster than usual, and I don't have enough (really cold weather, extra time shooting, etc., at high elevations), to have a battery I can charge just a bit in such situations is huge. Even if it has half the juice the Canon battery does, it would be a godsend. So for situations like that, I think it'd be worth it.

I appreciate the comment. I haven't heard that, but now I'm curious how I could test that theory out more scientifically and compare it to a canon battery over time. @@JaredHoyman I think to do it really scientifically would involve abusing the camera by running long videos over and over, which would probably end up giving you some hot/stuck pixel issues. Honestly speaking, the batteries with USBC still overrun cannon ones if they support 2A as input current value. For directly plugging in Cannon R6, the USBC input has to be 5V3A, requiring a power bank to support the voltage and current values. However, in my experiences the majority of power banks cannot support these values though they claim they can. Ones that do support these values are relatively expensive. As a sport filmmaker, third-party ones are still ideal options since the continuous shots do not need to be very long allowing me to change batteries when the operating one is dying. (Just some personal opinions)

It figures. When you add the charging in the battery there is less space for battery. The same would be true if Canon did the same unless using a different type of battery cell. Thar being said, Smallrig should state the proper power rating.
@vasiliss3597
@vasiliss3597 4 ай бұрын
I'd be quite surprised if Canon was to implement the USB-C charging at their batteries. USB-C charging addition means that in the same size of battery, part of it would be used for the charging circuit. Thus, less space for the cells which equals less capacity.

The problem is that different current draws give different total mAh counts depending on the cell design. Two different "1500mAh" cells may both give 1500mAh total when drained at 0.1amps, but when that is ramped up to a 1-2 amps, it may be only 900mAh for one and 1400mAh for the other. Camera batteries are unfortunately designed right at the edge of their drain/heat rates, which is great for high capacity in a small package, but then when you go beyond simple photo shooting it falls apart in performance. Comparing a Canon 1865mAh 7.2V battery vs a racing drone 1800mAh 7.4V Li-Po battery, the capacity is roughly the same, but the racing drone battery is rated for a higher current draw. Way higher. It could power 20 cameras concurrently and not break a sweat. I tested a EOS 550D on the battery current draw; It idles at about 0.15A(1-2W) and records video at 0.7A(5-6W). This is appropriate for those small canon batteries. On the other hand, my Blackmagic Pocket 4K draws easily 3A (20W) or more from those LP-E6N batteries, even when not shooting video. This is IMO 3x more than what is appropriate. The batteries totally overheat and shut down during operation. They can't work properly in cold. They don't work in sun. They don't last even remotely their full capacity compared to in a lower draining camera like a normal Canon DSLR. This is bad product design; it's canon LP-E6N compatible in size, but not in usage. To use the Canon batteries with my Pocket 4K, i have to swap between them every 5-10min so they can cool down and stabilize their resistance. So these Smallrig LP-E6NH batteries have even less current drain ability than an original canon battery, yes, but maybe in some cameras with lower current draw that's just fine. Given that even a Canon LP-E6N is under spec'ed for blackmagic Pocket, i think that's a consideration for any battery. It's still a good product, in the right application. Though the manufacturer should state this limitation. If you look at www.lygte-info.dk, the guy has a ton of tests of batteries that really shows the different total capacities at different current draws.

Batteries are a funny business. All you’re seeing is the outside and not the internals. These third party batteries have their place as backups (so long as they don’t cross a specific pricing threshold). I think powerbanks and other power supplies offer a better value. It’s too bad we can’t rig up Eneloops as reliable power supplies. Remember when Canon offered AA battery trays on their grips and then killed it? Nikon is even worse on the front of third party batteries as theyll go full IDF on camera internals.

What is the big deal if the battery capacity turns out to be 20% less and the battery cost 1/2 the price ? That does not make it a bad purchase. If you value the convenience of the USB-C port directly on the battery that should be good. As a side note Canon made several versions of the LP-E6 and they have different capacities

You have pointed out how much you paid for off brand and cost of the Canon battery.. For the 1Dx the Canon battery is $169-189 each. Off brand is $29-49 So I can buy 6 to 9 for the cost of one Canon battery! Look I keep 2 backs up with me and yes I need to sometimes put it the back up battery in . But think of that! As having been in photography 50 plus years..A third party lens is never as good! Things like auto focus is slower or my of a problem with locking on the subject, maybe lack of sharpness of different F.stops and the lack of contrast. And how long the lens will last! I'm still using a few A.F. Canon lenses from the late 1990's and have taken millions of photos from them! I do thank you for your postings of videos but please cover the subject in all the matter!

Please take down your initial video. I almost bought it from that video, and then stumbled upon this one. I almost dismissed it as a "gotcha" video.. you know the negative title and key frame videos that re click bait... thankfully, I still clicked on it. I understand youtube algorithms etc.. but please remove the initial video.

How dare you say that about small rig?😂. Small Rig POLICE on the way. You’re going to get trolled so bad.😂😂😂😂😂 I never buy third-party the only one that I ever did buy third-party batteries from is RAV power. They worked great for about a year, then lost their fizz.

I took it off. The reason I kept it on is that many people reached out after seeing both videos and said they still went with the small rig because although it was 20% less battery life it was over 50% the price and the usb-c charging option on the go worked for them. It is a very subjective view on a battery and I wanted people to make their own decision. I did decide to make it unlisted and I will probably do a follow up down the line on these types of batteries. Thanks for the comment.
