A 10' 3wt has long been on my list of things I want. A lot of the time though, 10' 3wts are closer to 4 wts. I have had to sort through a lot of rods to find those that are properly weighted. I have one that is much happier with a 5 wt line than a 3 wt. I have switched to a different manufacturer and I am much happier with them. Thanks for this report Andy, I enjoyed it!

Hi Andy great review as always. I wonder if you felt the vision hero would cast a dry fly ok? I tend to use a 10 3w and then for dries change spools and use a 4w line for dry flies so was curious if you felt this rod would do that fine too as well as nymphing. Thank you

Please do, I get the fact of French nyphing is a long tapper with no fly line in the rings, Czech can be done with a fly line partially out the tip. But Spanish n Polish ETC I have no idea.

Andy, Thanks for an excellent review. I found a 10ft 3wt Hero in one in one of the fly fishing outlets Australia, except it doesn't have the fighting butt nor the length 'markers' on the rod in your review. Neither could I find it on the Vision website itself. Wondering if this might be a new product, or rather where could I get my hands on one?

You're right about the colour. It's no where near as dreadful in real life as it looks in the promo stuff and it makes a nice change from unimaginative black. Locking nuts on reel seats always smacks of poor engineering to me. The lack of a rod bags always annoys as well. Tubes are useful when travelling but for normal use a rod bag is all that's needed.

I never realy thought about changing rods. I still use my fathers Hardy pope size 7-8 caught salmon, seatrout and rainbows. But its getting a bit heavy in the hand these days.

Hi Andy, got one yesterday while l've been down on Dartmoor. It's a really great rod. Used it with a camou 9 meter leader and tried if with a NZ yarn indicator rig on some wider stretches. It casted this rig beautifully. I wonder if it would present a dry fly well too? My 8.5 ft #4 may have some competition in that regard now! Your review backs up completely what l feel about this rod and l too love the colour, it's definitely not yellow. I'd call it caramel. Cheers!

Iain Fraser Andy, as always you produce amazing informative videos. I am captaining our EPFFA England squad at the PSUK Home Internationals on the River Dee in Wales later in the year and am impressed by your review of the Hero but was wondering what your thought would be on the 2 wt 11 ft version as we are restricted to having no more that twice the length of the rod as a leader and there must be a fly line (euro nymph line is OK) on the reel. Do you think that the 2 wt would be too sensitive on a big river like the Dee? I have a Hardy 3 wt 10ft and an 11ft old 3wt Wychwood already for nymphing. Obviously for competition work I am looking at quantity not quality fish and grayling will be the main target .Most of the lads in the team are from the north with a couple from Gloucestershire and daft as it seems me from Essex where there is a hardly a proper natural game water this side of Derbyshire. I belong to a North Yorkshire club and fish the Swale and the Ure mostly. I would like to be able to point the lads towards the best rod for the job I want them to do. Andy, these long #3 weight rods need a balancing reel including line weight. When I got my long #3 nymphing rod (an Orvis) I thought I could use my little #3 brook rod's reel with a new spool to hold the special line. Nope, what a shock, I had get a relatively huge #5 Orvis Hydros reel in the shop to balance it. I was a bit peeved by the couple of extra hundreds of pounds I had to spend at the time just to balance it. So what I'm saying is it would be a good idea if you provided a reel weight in oz or g to balance these balance critical nymphing rods of any make please. Reels are a large hidden cost with fly fishing.

There's a fair amount here to unpack, some I agree with some not so. Firstly, a reel isn't a hidden cost, you know you need a fly reel for a fly rod! 😂 In terms of HAVING to buy a new reel, you didn't, your old reel would have done a job. I like to balance a longer rod but it's a real personal thing, some folks totally disagree with it and think it's nonsense. Your new rod would still have functioned just fine without the new reel. Also, we've reviewed £25 reels on the channel before, nobody has to spend £200. That said, my £75 scierra traxion 1 LW 3/4 balances this rod excellently for the way I grip, with just 100m of backing and a French leader on so about 160g 👍

@@IBandAndyFishing I'll revisit your cheap reel video, but the now closed Amersham Orvis shop didn't sell those. Anyway, had to have an Orvis outfit as a change to Hardy or Greys. I do own a stunning Vision Tank reel, so may well look at their rods as well, for a future buy. I freely admit I'm a tackle tart, but as an engineer I appreciate nice things. Shame you're up in Derbyshire, as otherwise I'd hire you for some Euro French leader nymph fishing instruction.

Will be interested to see if vision Do a nymphmaniac V2 with updated features post this love my 11f. Other wise for the 10ft spot in my quiver this looks like the one. Highly recommend the 8ft 4wt hero as a light weight small river dry rod, it's been holding up strong.

I would say if they did the 9.6 or 10- 3wt with a down locking seat and left the stripping guide where it is can mitigate the sag it would almost create one of the most versatile rods for a single rod outing. Pretty delicate on dry and more than functional as a shorter nymph rod. My holy grail is a single rod lightweight setup on a day out fast to add a French leader, seeming like the hardy ul LL 9.9 is still that for me would love to see some Grey's and hardy challengers there.

Hiya Andy, I've been toying with the idea of getting back into fly fishing for awhile now. Things have clearly moved on from swinging a team of spiders 😂. Great review as always. Really like the way you do these, breaking the rod down into sections. Makes it easier to absorb all the info. Really interesting point regarding 'Matt' blanks. It's something I've picked up on with my ultra light BFS rods, i.e. when I'm casting low weights and particularly casting down the line does tend to stick to the blank and can cause backlashes/overruns and obviously the lure goes no where near the intended target. Very valid point 👉

I started euro-nymphing last year with the Nymphmaniac 11 foot, 3 weight and am a true believer: great for my local Wye trout, also really good for barbel - as you say about this rod here, my Nymphmaniac has plenty of power in its long strong butt. So my question is this: is there a rod which will euro-nymph beautifully and also switch to a fly line and dries? Or should I stay with mono all through the Nymphmaniac and fish dry droppers? Is there a fantasy 10 foot, 3 weight that will do it all beautifully? Or am I mad? All the best and much appreciation for your channel.

Well, my Cortland Nymph 10.6 ft #3 does both quite nicely; ESN for barbel and perch and a WF3F for trout, chub and roach. But I think that other rods will also handle this. Just my two cents😉

Hi Andy, you're definitely looking for the Holy Grail there. I reckon this would handle a #3 fly line better than the Nympho which is very very soft. The Greys GR80 10' 3# Streamflex also fishes a fly line nicely when I've used other folks kit

Hi Andy, quick question: I always wonder, why you do prefer a 10ft rod over a lets say 7.5 rod for small streams. You always seem to "complain" about the rod being in the way in your small stream adventoures, yet you continue to use it. Why not use a smaller creek rod, even though its not "specifally" a euro nymph rod? Thight lines my friend!

this is a great question, and as ever with a river rod it comes down to compromise. I much prefer the "longer" rod for situations where I'm going to be throwing a lot of bow and arrow casts as I feel it gives me more distance and accuracy, and of course as we know, once it lands it also gives more control over a euro rig. Ideally for a situation like this I would have maybe a 9' 2#, but I don't own one so went with what I had. The reality is, even a "shorter" rod (8' or less) would still have been clumsy in this situation, and even though I'd have been more comfortable playing fish with it, I think I'd have hooked fewer fish as I'd have less control. I'm hoping to spend more time on these rivers in the summer using dry flies, I'll be getting a shorter rod for throwing fly line in these situations. I hope this makes sense!

It's pretty dirty, I didn't clean it for the review. No missing filler, no crumbling and no movement. It's not top top grade cork, but you won't get that on a £200 rod 👍

Hero, got both rods in the 9ft #6 and the hero edges it for me. The onki is a lovely rod but the hero just feels better, throws a lovely line and it's a joy to play fish on.

@@IBandAndyFishing OK, I was going to buy the Nymphmaniac but watching this I will go for the Hero with a Vision Hero Nymph/dry reel. I try and fish one a week so the rod and reel is going to cost me about £6.50 a week. Bargain!
