Yes, shared experiences are the number 1 thing Apple should work on. When I speak about it to people, often their first question is about this. I can’t believe 2 people with these devices, having spent a total of $8000, can’t even watch the same app together, as they can on a simple screen. Apple needs to fix this ASAP.

Ohh man. I remember my first time, it was an experience. And I have 3 vr headsets. People don’t get it .. until they try it. Back in the day with the first iPhone .. people were saying, my phone can do mp3, email, msg, internet .. I’m lot paying $600 .. the experience was just like nothing else. Think it’s the same here. We have vr/ar headsets.. it’s just different. Reality becomes boring. It’s like having super powers. And for me at least .. want to get back in. I’m torn as I don’t have a MacBook anymore. I agree that this would be a great device for a bachelor or someone living in a tiny apartment. A few years ago I was working in a different city and had a small apartment and this would’ve been awesome. This would’ve given me a great home office connected to my Mac,, an awesome home theatre and a great device for just general consumption. Harder for me to justify living in a house where there’s lots of room, a dedicated office, space, and where I would rather enjoy watching videos with my wife.

Very thoughtful review. As an artist I see the practical purposes already popping up (mural work , and virtual galleries) are of particular interest. So I am going to keep mine. I know I could likely do this in a Quest 3, but the Apple Ecosystem is a Hell of a drug. By biggest concern is weight distribution (which I think 3rd parties will improve with alternative straps, reddit already has renders of some concepts) and the apps. the killer apps need to be here and soon. WWDC will be a big signal for apples future plans for the device. Vision OS 2 is going to be something.

What if Apple considered Vision Pro having its own continuing product evolution and being treated in the same way concept cars are. A platform of the greatest ideas and designs all put on display, and then pulled from. All aspects of the concept are pulled from to create, refine or add to other products. Maybe Apple sees how much people enjoyed being able to have a simple extended monitor for their computers, and create a dedicated personal monitor headset. Maybe pull from aspects of the software experience to use in any or all of their other operating systems.

Had my demo yesterday! It was really heavy to me. Apparently I have a small head lol but it felt uncomfortable only after 15 minutes, solo knit band. I also really disliked having to concentrate and look at something in order to interact with it. Spatial videos on iPhone weren’t that good. The screens didn’t seem that detailed… environments weren’t high quality, neither were 3D movies or even Apple’s demo photos. The only thing really high detailed was the app interfaces and Safari, which was really nice at 100hz. It wasn’t as nearly as high quality as I was expecting. I can’t afford it, but I guess we’ll see how it improves down the line. 🤷🏽

My takeaway has been that while right now it’s niche and expensive, I think apple has kinda nailed the user experiance. I think in the not to far future it will be mainstream to walk around with some sort of ar glasses, and I think apple will be a key player, alongside whatever open source competitor wins out, which could still be anyone at this point. The big question for me right now is which is bigger: AI, or AR? Maybe both, a real-world, general ai assistant that sees everything you do… scary sure, but the potential increase in human productivity it could create is insane. Side note: first app I would make if I could for reality os would be a virtual label organizing app that lets you label where all your stuff goes in virtual reality (and potentially offers help organizing it optimally). When your cleaning you know where everything goes via labels and search bar/ navigation options and then when you need to find it same thing, plus Siri/AI integration that is hopefully actually good and you can ask where it should be.

In 5 generations, I think AVP can/will start to replace some of the devices in the Apple ecosystem. The first to go will be the iPads. AVP, once polished and App ecosystem built out, will utterly make the iPads redundant for most users. By gen 10, laptops will start being something people just won't need, starting with the low end stuff and working upwards as the processing on AVP get more capable. The iPhone, that's a more murky one. Battery tech might not be there and the biggest hurdle (for me anyways) is I'm not sure I would want a cellular transmitter strapped right next to my head.
@davidmullins38023 ай бұрын
Let me say I have never used on of these device yet and not even on my road map. I not going to lie the technology in the Vision Pro is great, but I don't think this product is for the average consumer. It is for the Business world for a better 3D Modeling environment. The biggest limitation Vision Pro will face is that the operating system is just another flavor of iOS. VisionOS will always be to limiting to replace a Mac. While I use iPad 80% of what I do in real life, it is still something I can interact with and touch. See, Apple dreams of this becoming main stream and I am surprised they even released a product like this. It is kinda unsure of what it wants to be, a TV, Monitor, or an iPad. I am lost of what this product is for unless you need 3D Modeling for work. All the feature people talk about are great yea, but what good are the feature if the average consumer can't afford it. Most people still buy a lower cost iPad. There is one way this product line could go main stream but it would have to take a drastic change in the design, and I don't know if Apple would want to do that. It not VR/AR that people want it is spatial computing that they want. So, where do they need to go from here, I would say a product that has a lot of the feature of Apple Vision Pro but build like Google Glass was built. We desire to be connected to other people in our lives. Once you take the person face & eyes away people feel disconnected for that person. That is why in 10 years not one of these headsets have taken off because the few that a sold each year. There has to be a middle ground and I don't think Apple's eyesight is going to change that. Great Idea mind you, just don't look right. So, that brings us to two type of products that will fit into a social environment eye glasses or contact lenses. Batteries aren't even close to giving us all day battery life in contacts lenses. The only other product is Glasses, you can see people face, and still ready body language with them. That is the product that is going to make spatial computing mainstream! Their are still a lot of issue worked out even on a set of Glasses. With all the sensors and camera to make it work properly. You would have to build a matrix that allows a user to select Windows to follow them around, as well an having static Windows that are left where the user leaves them. The last issue is processing power, if they want to replace the phone, tablet, and computer they would need to shrink the processing power to fit in an arm of the Glasses. No one want to carry a brick around with them. Only then will Apple hit the nail on the head with me. That product I would buy the day it came would out and built application for. Right now their isn't a market for VR/AR for the most part, because I don't think these headset everyone keeps build is what people wants. Sorry for being so long!
@sdfjsd3 ай бұрын
I think it's pretty clear now: The Apple Vision Pro is not today's iPhone. It's not today's Mac, and it's not today's iPod. This device will not be remembered like the first iPhone or the first Mac because the tech just isn't there yet to squeeze this technology into a convenient form factor. It's just a building block product. Maybe some future moonshot AR product will be the next iPhone, and maybe that will bring the technology to the masses with perfection, but it won't be the Vision Pro. It's like Xerox's computers. They really pioneered the graphical user interface, but when Xerox showed Steve Jobs their technology, Steve and his colleagues were the ones to give the technology the final push that it needed to become mainstream, and that was when Apple released the first Mac. The Vision Pro is nothing more than today's Xerox Alto computer. It is a concept, not a mass-market product. It shows what the technology can do, but it's not refined enough.

Imagine next Quest 4 in year or 2, if they remove the battery and made it even more lighter!!! Obviously they will bring eye tracking and even improved clarity to compete with Vision. Screen door effect is already thing of past. Plus their controllers for both hands have haptics which are really immersive for content and so good. And you can’t interact and play same games or share experiences across the globe with family members. I wanted Vision Pro now I want next lighter Quest and will wait for it. Their library and content are polished since they have been doing for years. Samsung will come out with one too and they originally had awesome content and were one of first ones with Samsung Gear. Those companies working with Samsung were bought by Apple. Lightest Weight will be the key element to enjoy this technology.

I think a couple of years ago before the AVP and Quest 3... just about every VR headset including the Oculus Go were designed mainly for gaming. The difference today in VR with the Quest 3 and AVP... they're designed to do a lot more than gaming. I've owned several VR headsets over the past 7 years and today I own the Quest 3. I find today with the Quest 3 I spend a lot more time using the headset doing things besides playing games and I'm sure the same would be true with the AVP. Not much different when the first home computers came out in the 80's like the Atari 800, Commodore 64, etc... yes, they were computers but really, they were for gaming... 10 or so years later home computers became far more functional than just games and it spread like wildfire to every home. I believe that is what is happening today with VR & Mixed reality. It's actually exciting for me to be witnessing this evolution all over again.

They probably don't want a repeat of the 1990s with an incompatible CEO. I don't know if there's time to add an Apple Car to Tim's legacy but he will definitely make sure AVP is polished and thriving so that he can leave on a high note.

I think Apple will produce a less expensive version with fewer features, like EyeSight, but I don't think it will be at a "mass market" price e.g. below say $2k. I also don't think future versions of the Vision Pro are going to be revolutionary in nature. Even three or four versions down the line we are not likely going to see the display go from 4k per eye to 8k to get the "retina" label. We're not likely to see the external cameras double or quadruple in quality to get to pass-through to human eye quality. We're not likely to see a quadrupling in computing efficiency that would be needed to get "all day battery," etc. Apple put their best foot forward with this device, and it is really not as barebones as the original iPhone was by any measure. In fact, in many aspects it is on the cutting edge.
@Ohmie3 ай бұрын
I don’t see any future where Apple does away with EyeSight. It is a core, fundamental feature of the product. Apple places a tremendous amount of emphasis on Vision Pro not removing you from the people and things around you, and the importance of maintaining connection to people during usage. If Apple truly felt this way, there’s no way they would do away with it and would reduce cost through other functions/features. For example removing (or creating a cheaper version) of the audio pods since AirPods still provide Spatial Audio (and realistically, AirPods Pro just sound way better than the audio pods. They could also move to a polymer frame similar to the plastic used in the AirPods/AirPods case. Beautiful, durable, and cheaper to make than a single milled block of aluminum (and would also drop the weight). And as the product scales in the marketplace, components like the OLED displays, R1, etc. will get cheaper and cheaper. They will get the price down, but the low resolution (and what is likely a low cost) EyeSight display isn’t it.

Truly, this was the first Apple product that I felt underwhelmed with. I wanted to like it and I constantly found myself looking for reasons to keep it, but even as a staunch supporter of Apple, that reason never came. In total, I ended up spending less than a few hours with it before deciding to return it on day 3 of ownership (even though I knew Apple would allow me to keep it for an additional 11 days). Having used Samsung folding phones, I personally feel that Apple should have used their financial resources on folding phones, rather than Apple Vision Pro. If this device is the reason we never see an Apple folding phone, then it makes the launch of Apple Vision Pro even that much more discouraging.

Your review (well done) is consistent with virtually all the reviews I've watched. Cool little bit of technology, but no real use case. Apple has been testing this product for years (I work for a biotech company in SF that did some use case testing for it), and our team thought it was really cool, but struggled to find a solid benefit in using it. Too big, too heavy and bulky, limited apps, WAY too expensive. And pretty much a single user device (this was not the case when we tested it). That's a killer problem, in my opinion. Will Apple or anyone make some killer apps that justify the purchase of one of these?? I'm skeptical. Clearly Apple doesn't have one yet.
@andrew55003 ай бұрын
Maybe I have a different perspective because I've been using VR headsets since 2013, but I must say that visionOS itself *is* the killer app of this device, and watching content or surfing the web with the UX design afforded by the OS. Apple's problem is that they needed a justification for the high cost, and decided to justify the price by marketing this to "professionals", when in reality it's a v1.0 proof-of-concept for the first actually intuitive VR operating system. Much like the very first iPhone was an underbaked proof-of-concept for the first actually intuitive mobile operating system (which was missing an SDK, an App Store, copy/paste, GPS, and much more at launch), and very few people took it seriously as a device for professionals. It was also called an expensive, fancy toy with too many drawbacks.

I think adding the information that Apple was widely known to be working on something in this category for over 10 years is important. That tells us that Apple did not look at an existing market and see where they could fit in, but in some ways led to other manufacturers developing products once they learned about Apple’s interest. Easy to return it when you never had the intention of keeping it. As for those who actually like tech, I wouldn’t even sell it for a profit. There is objectively more value in this thing than $5,000 to me. I’m sure other tech enthusiasts will agree. I just can’t bring myself to return the most advanced personal electronics device ever made.
