~ A journey back in time ~ Part 1
"In today's video join me for a special two-part series of my trip to the Ulster American Folk Museum in Co. Tyrone. In this first video, we'll be exploring how Irish people lived and the homes they inhabited before emigrating to the New World. Take a walk down the meandering bóithrín and visit humble stone cottages, the old school house, lament old tales over the crackling fire, wander down the main street in search of sweets, and perhaps a parting drink in the pub between old friends and family.
Next Sunday, we'll be continuing our journey over the Atlantic Ocean as we arrive in America and discover how the Irish immigrants settle into their new land of opportunity.
Hope you enjoy this video, and please remember to hit the subscribe button, as this really helps the growth of my channel and allows me to continue to make content for everyone to enjoy." - Gillian x

✿ Traditional Irish Porridge Recipe ✿
Add 1 cup of rolled oats to a pot, then add 2 cups of water and 1 cup of milk and bring to the boil, then reduce to a simmer and keep stirring the pot to avoid sticking. Once the porridge changes texture and thickens, it is ready to serve. Add to a bowl and sprinkle on some brown sugar, honey or homemade conserve and enjoy!

Gillian, the last few images brought tears to my eyes picturing how my great grandparents had to travel across the Atlantic. To think I wouldn't be here today, nor would my two daughters, had our ancestors not been so brave. They left a beautiful country, but one with such hardships. Thank you for this glimpse into "my" past, as well as probably the past of many other Americans whose people also came here to America hoping for better lives, sailing into their unknown futures....

We don't know a lot about my ancestors who all came from various parts of Ireland, Scotland, and England. My father used to say it was the potato famine that drove our more immediate ancestors from the isles to North America. It appears some of them started out in Canada and then gradually made their way to the US. All of my great grandparents were primarily farmers by trade.

Yes that’s true, many crossed into Canada first as it was a cheaper option, and they would then travel down into states such as Pennsylvania, NY and Massachusetts 💕

Oh how I love this! Our home is done in the very primitive style from the late 1800’s. I love history and what it must have been like for my Italian immigrants when they came here. I have many old school things that they used then, oil lamps, children’s leather button shoes and primitive toys made by their parents then, old quilts, etc. The countryside there looks much like it does here in upstate New York in our rural area so must have brought them some sense of home. I also collect and use old crocks, jugs, vintage kitchenwares and medicinal items…things they would have used then. They bring me so much coziness, warmth, a simpler time in life before technology replaced people and family time. Thank you so much for taking us along❤❤

@@LostForest there sure is as I can feel how they must have lived through the things in our home. I love the old children’s primer school tablets and books and often look through them. The oil lamps and many candles that I use are just as good as lamps of today but much cozier. The kitchen utensils they used, if good enough for them are good enough for me and better than most modern ones. I so wish I could share pictures with you, you’d see so many similarities 🤎🤎

Loved this so much and looking forward to next week! I have a broad range of European ancestors with a smattering of Irish (O'Riley, among others). The contribution of the Irish to the building of America is undeniable.

I have the trunk she arrived here with which was made of rosewood. When I think of her traveling all this way. Seeing the ship and the conditions made me sad. I have her photo and her scrap book which is an amazing insight into the brave woman she was and her love of fashion ,her views on politics, and even pretty cards she received. They settled in Dearborn, Michigan (right outside Detroit) and set up farms. William (one of the brother's and my GG Uncle) was the Father to someone we are very proud of here in Michigan. Henry Ford the Automaker. Very proud of my ancestors. that is just the Irish side. The Scottish side is even more interesting! ;)

What a beautiful place Gillian! The architectural similarities between Ireland and Andalucia are incredible; whitewashed walls, stone floors and brown roofs! Any of the building you show could be found in the Andalucia fields due to their similitary! On the order hand, I hope that the Irish do not have to experience emigration again like that of the 19th century, since in a recent survey, seven out of ten young Irish people are currently thinking about leaving the country. I lived away from my land for eight years; one of them in Ireland, and although I have wonderful memories, I always dreamed of returning. A hug Gillian!
@LostForest
@LostForest 9 ай бұрын
Yes! They are indeed many similarities in the architecture. Vernacular styles were similar in the 19th and early 20th centuries, even down to the painted wooden furniture. Unfortunately there was a lot of emigration in the 1980s and it still continues but not on the same scale of course. Ireland unfortunately has a very centralised economy, where Jobs are mostly in Dublin and a couple of other big cities. Anyone living in rural areas can’t afford to live and work in Dublin and choose to emigrate for better jobs and to be able to afford to buy their own home. 💕

@@LostForest in the '60 years there was a large emigration in Spain to Germany and Switzerland due to the loss of labor infrastructure after the civil war. Then starting in 2000 we began to receive a lot of inmigration from Latin America. Now what is known here as: empty Spain is happening! Immense rural areas of the interior have been deserted, in pursuit of life on the coast. Entire towns have been abandoned forever, thereby losing a rich ethnographic history. But fortunately there are still sone of us left to keep that history alive and share it with our new generations!

Gillian, I love visiting these kinds of museum experiences. I think I've mentioned before that both my husband's grandfathers were born in Ireland and immigrated to America. Since neither came from money, I'm sure they traveled in those horrific conditions. Many years ago, we visited a museum in Cobh called the Cobh Heritage Centre and there was an interactive exhibit where you could experience the movement of the ship in which these immigrants traveled. I tell you, I get so seasick and cannot imagine being so desperate as to endure that for 3 months! Thank you for sharing and as always, sending love to you, Mr. Pup, and the kitties❤🍀🐶🐈❤

I love this video. The visit to The Print Shop was especially wonderful to see as my aunt and uncle were printers in the small town I lived in in Wisconsin. I could actually imagine I could still smell the ink. It brought back many good memories as I was there quite often and watch their children for them when I was young. Looking forward to next Sunday. Thank you so much for taking us along

When you begin the long drive setting in this vlog….6:10 marker 27.21 ….a violin is heard in the background. Beautiful. Whomever plays it, makes it talk. Can u tell me who that is or what is the name of the CD used there? I enjoyed all of this vlog. Relaxing to watch. And interesting. A beautiful journey. Thank I for taking me with u. While the village is still so beautiful it seems so lonely now, nobody is sending/getting their mail there and none of the shops see customers anymore...it's like the buildings miss the activity.
