The fact that US perceptions of Germany might have been influenced by post-WWII peacekeeping in the south of Germany is actually quite fascinating ! Never thought about it like that, Mark, but it does seem logical. :-) And thanks for another nice video.

Your videos are great! Especially about Germany. You're right about many nice places to visit in Bavaria, enough to see for at least one month of travel. Medieval Rothenburg ob der Tauber is very popular for tourists that come by the busloads. Along the "Romantik Road" are other, less crowded towns, but also very interesting, such as Dinkelsbühl and Nördlingen. What's great about Bavaria are the Gasthauses with wooden beams, wooden furniture, and nicely decorated on the inside. Some have been serving guests for centuries.

The trouble with Christmas time in the south of Germany and across in Austria is that so many things close early, or completely, for the holidays. It gets dark early and the Christmas decorations help, but there is so much less to do than the warmer months. Still had a great time when I returned after 35 years away a few years ago.

Another disadvantage might be the language barrier. I hear that many people in that part of Germany don't speak the standard High German. I have also heard that it can be hard to find people who speak English in some of the smaller towns. Next year, I hope to go to the town of Oberstdorf, so hopefully I'll be able to get around with my limited German.

+godsmacks1000 hmm, for us it's very important to learn proper english, so all the young people speak it quite well :) but if you are not in school anymore and you get easily out of practice, so older people are not thaaaat good in speaking english. But i guess a problem in Bavaria is the accent. We all roll the r for example and a lot of us can't pronounce the "th". That might be weird for you, to hear us talking with a strong accent.
@HUTZKIKLON

You did kind of touch on this, but Franks don't really consider Franken to be Bavaria. If you see someone in Lederhose in Bamberg they will almost definitely be from the south of Bavaria. Also, the sausage kitchen by the old stone bridge over the Danube in Regensburg is medieval, built by the stone masons that built the bridge. Nothing to do with the Romans actually. Just my personal opinion, but I much prefer the Sandkerwa in Bamberg to the Oktoberfest. Apart from being way less touristy and commercialised, the beer is far better.

You missed something when you do not visit bavaria. It's changing your thoughts about us, because there is no bad thing about bavaria. If you want to visit bavaria you have to travel around, on the autobahn or around the lakes, because we have much more than just Oktoberfest or Neuschwanstein. The small cities are the oldest and the best ones!!! Great Video I love your positive appereance and thoughts about us but as I mentioned, theres is no negative point, it's the best part of Germany (and the World). Greetings from Bavaria. In Augsburg there is no US Military anymore since the 16th of June 1998. although there are still many bases around the country. in the time span from 2006 to 2016 alone the number of US soldiers in germany decreased by about 50% from 72.416 to 35.800 soldiers. (fyi: there are also still 3.671 Brits, 594 French, 443 Dutch, 148 Belgian and 107 Canadian soldiers still here (or at least until 2016, which are the most recent numbers i found)). But there are still plenty bases here in Germany - Most of them used for US Missions in the middle east like the Ramstein Airbase with one of the biggest US military hospitals outside the US. Ramstein is also the Headquaters for many NATO-related activities, AFRICOM and AIRCOM. you can look at a list (in german only unfortunately) here: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ausl%C3%A4ndische_Milit%C3%A4rbasen_in_Deutschland#Regionale_Auflistung en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramstein_Air_Base

+Linus Wärn In Bavaria you also say ''Ade!'' (dialect; the traditional way) when you want to say goodbye. Just pronounce the ''e'' a bit longer. Otherwise people are saying Tschüss all over Germany. It dosn't matter if you are at the supermarket or in a Biergarten. At some working places you say ''Auf Wiedersehen'' to your customers, to be more polite and not as casual as saying ''Tschüss''. But today you even have workers at a shop like Vodafone or at some bank that say ''Tschüss'' (for bye) when you leave. So Germany is pretty casual if you take is at a whole.

When I was a kid, we were based in a small town called Werl. There were Americans down the road, as well as Belgians to the side of our patch. Our primary school was literally across the road, but secondary school was in Dortmund. It is tragic that despite living for 4 years in Germany the only thing I saw was the Mohnesee Dam and a few fun parks like Stuckenbruck and Fantasia Land. At that time, primary schools didn't do languages, so I only got a bit of German at high school before returning to Scotland. My parents didn't drive, and not once took us on a train or tram anywhere. It was either the school youth-club trips or Scouts that I got to see anything at all.

Hi Walter, awesome video of my country. Thanks. But there is something I have to niggle about. 'Tschüss' is German and NOT Baravian! Better use 'Servus'. I was never allowed to say 'Tschüss' by my Mom, a proud Bavarian ... ;) And, as I studied in Coburg, I know those Bamberges are a bit 'high nose' regarding this gem of Coburg. Best you visit Coburg without your Bamberg friends ;) and enjoy.

Hello Wolter, how are you doing? Nice comparison, that Bayern/Bavaria would be the Germans' Florida - before I rather had seen it matching to Aspen/Colorado👍 You also may recommend Herrenchiemsee, Linderhof, Bodensee, Zugspitze, Obersalzberg and Eagle's Nest. Passau or Landshut, worth to be seen. Frankonia has good beer. Also the area "Bayrischer Wald" or "Allgäu" are great places, as well all the lakes, Forgensee, Ammersee, Starnberger See, not to forget Königssee, or the awesome scenery around Tegernsee. If the food seems to be too heavy, try to have a non-alcoholic beer with some radish, besides that there are good stews, vegetable soups and other foodstuff besides sausage: red cabbage with a variety of game -well prepared, it's quite delicious. There are trouts. If you go to Königssee lake, have a try in Saint Bartholomew, near the chapel, smoked savelinus (German "Saibling") is served, a salmon-like fish, fresh from the cold lake. Thank you for your high estimation of Bavaria. The natives also do so, they have a saying: "It's nice to be a Price (Bavarian denomination for a Prussian), but there is nothing higher than to be a Bayer".

Haha, funny, someone from Baden-Württemberg is saying "hello, we are here, too!" I lived in both parts of Germany and despite they are so close together they are so different but they are both the nicest part of Germany. I would say: Bavaria with the high mountains and astonishing architecture of the little houses with the flat roofs is visually just amazing and fantastic, Baden-Württemberg has a very "lovely" countryside with cute little towns, very, very nice little hills and mountains, a dream for example to ride a motorbike and they have a lot of little culture highlights while the bavarian culture is more oldstylish but hearty. They have very different food but one is better than the other... etc.

I've just come back from Bavaria and you're right...I want to go back and see Bamberg and Regensberg.... Having seen Munich, Berlin, Fussen and Garmisch-Partenkirchen, I was really looking forward to Nuremberg. I was left so disappointed. It seemed like a very grotty city with nothing to do other than a few history tours. Munich remains my favourite and I loved Berlin. You're right about Bayern having so much wondrous nature on offer. Thanks for your videos - they have inspired me to go to Germany 3 times last year and I so want to go again!! :) :)

I agree about the beautiful small towns. We stayed in Thallmaesing. I probably spelled it wrong. It was wonderful and inexpensive. I could have stayed a week and not have gotten bored. The local restaurants were reasonably priced and exceptionally good. There were two museums, and everyone was so friendly. I can imagine many more towns like this to explore. Munich was definitely a blast though,

Since you mentioned food, one piece if advise: Most „traditional“ German cuisine is heavy on meat. Even seemingly „meatless“ dishes can have some bacon bits in them or are based on a meat broth. Vegetarians can handle this well, but vegans might have a less positive experience - especially in the more rural areas. #1 meat is pork. If you choose a diet without pork, e.g. for religious reasons or because you just don’t like it, you‘ll do fine most of the time with beef, chicken or fish. But know that most sausages are made from pork (beef just doesn’t work that great for sausages).

If you didn't book in advance it usually helps to try the villages three to five miles outside tourist central. Many Gastwirtschaften have Fremdenzimmer (= guestrooms) for very low prices. And if you want to stay in tourist central usually the tourist office can help you out with bed and breakfast on short notice. The only exception if there is a major fair like the CeBit in Hannover or of course major events like the Oktoberfest in Munich, then you might have to plan for an extra hour on public transport in and out of tourist central with public transport to and from your hotel or bed and breakfast "Landgasthof mit Fremdenzimmer".

I'm so happy I found you talking about Bamberg. I went to Nuremberg this week and while being there I knew I had to buy Bayern Ticket (thanks to listening to your videos) and go to a hidden gem called Bamberg (again, thanks to your videos) and now I'm completely in love with this little cute town. I really want to go back there and have more of Rauchbier and see the beautiful architecture of this place as it reveals more and more of old buildings as you progress through the town. Thank you for that :)
