Belize was the first foreign country I ever visited. I was 18 and I went with a small group from college. I’ve never felt as safe wandering around the cities I come from here in the US as I did in Caye Caulker! A local man showed us constellations and we followed the sound of Piano Man to a karaoke bar. Not a day goes by I don’t think about those fry jacks. I love Belize!

My Aunt has a home in Consejo. I have for years now gone down and sit in her yard next to the bay. I have been to every temple site more than twice so far. Things to remember when touring around- have a plan in advance before you arrive. Flight into Belize city from the U.S.A. Could take you up to 36 hours of being awake in total if booked cheap. It did me once. I got a Direct flight into Cancun and took the bus into Chetumal, then hit the bus system in Belize. 1- book a 2 night room to get comfortable to travel. 2- Do your own tours and save on costs. Find a place to go. 3- Do not rent a car, costs $100.00 us dollars per day. 4- Ride the bus system, cost $1.00- $2.00 us dollars. When the bus pulls into the yard, run to the back of the bus open the rear door, drop your what-ever's down and take a seat near to your what-ever's. You DON'T BUY A TICKET, THE DOOR MAN WILL FIND YOU, pay cash to him. All the other people are boarding through the front door, when full the bus leaves. Tell him where your going to. He will call out the stop for you. 5- Finding a room in your city is very easy, do not book one. You will not like your room, or will get ripped off in price's. After you exit the bus, walk down the street and you will see a LOT OF PRIVATE HOMES SET UP. They all watch you walking on the street with your bags. They call you over to see the rooms, go in and look first. Then barter your stay, very common to do. 6- Go to your tour by walking or bus. Pay when you arrive, it's way cheaper. Some places like Jaguar Paw- (Santa Ignacio is were all the good places are to see) it's where the Zip lines and Cave water tubing is. About 10 miles from town. It's down a dirt road about a few miles. No Big Deal, someone is in a car and will take you there for a small fee. We did this and payed him extra to buy tickets and go on both Zip lines and Cave touring. BOTH ARE SUPPER GREAT, DON'T LEAVE BELIZE UNTIL YOU DO BOTH. He takes you back to the bus stop. Some bus's are free to ride on, just be watching and wave them down. 7- Temples are super cheap to visit. The one that costs the most is Lamanai Reserve. This goes down the New river in Orange Walk. Take a rain coat if need be, it's over an hour to get down. It's the best site to see by far. 8- Best time of year to arrive. April -May. Why, because it rains very little and the mosquitoes are a lot better to deal with. Later on when nice out you will be hamburger meat in one day. They also have Doctor Flies that draw blood and you will take days to recover. Always bring long sleeve shirts and full length pants and shoes and socks. Mosquitoes are waiting for you everywhere in places. The closer you are to water is best to be, across the street you are hamburger meat. 9- Belican beer is nasty. They only have Heineken for other. If say you like Corona beer ask the bar tender if he has what you like, he does in the back. If you smoke, same thing ask him for your smokes. Belize cigs are nasty. 10- You can stay longer than 30 days if you leave and return to Belize, so go to Tikal or Mexico to see sites. I saw 4 countries, 20 sites, flight and food, rooms, extras, girls, fun for 50 days and spent no more than $1500.00 us dollars. GO SEE BELIZE

ETX Sports Like I said I don’t like it, but she is an old lady. I think the reasoning is because back in Iran the older toilets can’t take toilet paper and they don’t usually use toilet paper there, so she’s not used to it. (They clean with water rather than paper.) A lot of toilets in the ME have water sprays instead of paper.

I absolutely love belize. My grandparents retired down there in the 90’s in the country side of San Ignacio. Used to go there every summer as a kid, finally went back down last winter for the first time in about a decade. Going back next winter for our honeymoon to show my fiancé what a beautiful country it is. Really neat to see all these places on video that we’ve been to numerous times as kids! Hoping one day, I too, can retire down there! The only thing I think I’d like to add for anyone who may be thinking about going to visit, while it may be more on the expensive side as far as Central American countries go, know that if you eat local/buy fresh grown foods, it is incredibly cheap compared to what you would pay for the same things in the US!

I've been to Belize 4 times for mission trips, and it is a beautiful place. The people are laid-back and friendly, and I enjoyed being there. We were helping a local church in Xiabe village, in Northern Belize, building a bathroom , and putting up a fence.
@swilhelm3180
@swilhelm3180 5 жыл бұрын
You flew to Belize to build a bathroom and fence? If you had just sent them the money you would have spent on the airfare couldn't they have built many bathrooms and fences? I never understand short mission trips. If you're going there on holiday and do this as well then it makes sense.
@dru1894

What's Important? Although the sentiment sounds good, I.e. to help out, I can’t help but to think that the locals could have done that? For example they could have sent the resources over and a local person could have done it and been paid for their work. It’s a relatively small job.
@swilhelm3180
@swilhelm3180 5 жыл бұрын
@@dru1894 The answer is to combine a vacation to a place you have wanted to visit anyway with bringing stuff they can use and expertise they need. As most people usually only have a 1 week vacation it does get a bit absurd. Most people are pretty wiped for a couple days after traveling so they have maybe 4 days because the last day is spent returning. Short holidays are rather ridiculous. Better to spend them at home with family. Or volunteer at home. There seems to be high needs most everywhere.
@dru1894
@dru1894 5 жыл бұрын
What's Important? - Well, in fairness the person didn’t say how long they went over for. As long as there’s a good sentiment there and they’re not harming people or their culture then whatever. 🤙🏾

I left England on a British Army posting exactly 40 years ago and flew to Belize on a RAF VC10 (via Newfoundland, the US (Washington Dulles) and Bermuda). There was snow on the ground in the Uk on 15th Jan 1980, and when we finally landed in the mid evening at Belize International Airport it was absolutely roasting hot when we stepped off the plane. I spent 6 months there and absolutely loved it. Spent most of my time at Airport Camp (now Price Barracks I believe) Toured around the country and loved it. Especially the Cayes. Managed to get up to mexico too. Several of my pals took part in an international Forces football tournament in Florida which they won. I would love to go back again and hopefully when I am properly retired in just a few years time that will be possible and I will be able to take my family over with me. These videos make me want to go there now, but I need to get the finances in order. Belize is an amazing place. :)

The up charge come from the western expats who unfortunately dictate and run the tourist business game and resorts in Belize. You will mostly be charged tourist rates everywhere. There are of course some few exceptions. I recommend to support the local native people and their businesses as tourism is the primary source of income for most natives.

Well this is my personal opinion from my experience. We just came back from a 10 days trip to Belize. We stay in San Pedro but visited caye caulker and many other areas. 1- from all the other countries I’ve visited Belize is way way overpriced 2- I’m Latin and didn’t feel the latín flavor there. Their attitude wasn’t as friendly as other Latin countries or even my mother land 2-Very bad problem with the seaweeds, I understand is Mother Nature and hard to control but, not all the water is clean and for instance San Pedro only had one swimmable beach (secret beach) as far as can tell for the day I stayed in caulker there was only the one too (the split) - positive things, if you are a diver they have amazing spots to check. Loved the variety of marine and coral life. Taking tours or schedule a private boat to go few sea miles out into the nice clean water is a must.

It's a funny thing, but maybe because you're Hispanic, you weren't treated like a tourist. I think tourists are greeted in a more friendly manner.... n most of the "Latin" or Hispanic people live in the north and some to the very west in Cayo.

We went to San Ignacio a couple of years ago. The people in San Ignacio are very friendly and welcoming. Something that may shock you is that most of the restaurants here don't have air conditioning. I recommend seeing Xunantunich. Cahal Pech is very close to San Ignacio which is also interesting to see. I didn't care much for El Pilar because most of the ruins are not dug up yet. Plus the road going to El Pilar is extremely bumpy. I was worried our taxi wasn't going to make it there. The steps going up Xunantunich are steep! Get ready for a serious workout and make sure to take a water bottle/snack with you. I also recommend going to Pop's restaurant in San Ignacio for breakfast. Its a little hole in the wall and you may have to share your table with strangers, but the food is very good.

Stay away from drugs. Majority of violence is drug related. One of the men killed in Belize from Canada they would not say why in the media. They tried to make it sound like it was random. Turns out the guy paid a minor for sex. The note on his dead body read, this is what happens to child rapist. Belize is not Thailand, if you have that mind set you could get in a lot of trouble. Show respect to the locals and stay away from drugs and you'll be safe all over the Country

Thank you for a very informative video. I'm considering a trip there, and this answered many questions. Glad you explained the crime situation because the U.S. Dept. of State advises high crime, but just as you said, particularly in South Belize City.

Proud of my country. Also, taxi is the more expensive transport method around. The local buses will get you everywhere you need to for a fraction of the price. Just ask anyone for help on which bus to take and you'll get your answer. When on the bus just tell the conductor where you wanna stop and they'll get you there.

I highly recommend the Actun Tunichil Muknal mayan cave! It's like being on a Tomb Raider / Indiana Jones movie. You climb up inside the cave, go through rivers and at the very top there's a mayan sacrifice site. It was an unforgettable adventure!

So the way I understand it is that you don't go to a restaurant to eat when you are hungry. You eat at home then b/c you can make your food as fast as you like. You go to a restaurant to watch ppl and have a drink and if food arrives at some point in time then you can eat it.

Everyone speaks English. we are Latin America but we are a former British colony. As Belizean person i hate how much he take advantage of tourist when it comes to pricing. In Cayo district i heard a taxi man tell a American couple the taxi ride cost 15 dollars (7.50 USD) to go up the hill and i heard this and i turned around around and i said out loud, 15 dollars what the hell, a taxi ride costs only 5$ (2.50 USD). Things are actually cheap but greedy people like to overcharge tourist.
