I have been living in Costa Rica for about 9 months with my 2 kids. One of the reasons I moved here is so that we can all learn the language-my oldest actually goes to school here. Your list is so on point! I am amazed that I can go on a walk every morning and still be taken aback by the mountain and ocean views.

As a tico, I can really tell how valuable the info you put out is. You were correct on every shock about my country, however, you missed something really shocking: the COFFEE. Costa Rican coffee is one of the best in the world and if you are buying it, make sure to buy Britt coffee. BTW, Im visiting Europe in November and your guides really come in handy. Blessings to you and your family Mark!

jeanniebugk Unfortunately, there are no Britt shops in the US. You could try and get it from Amazon, but I don't know how fresh their coffee is. What I would do is look for a local roaster and buy it there, local roasters usually have EVEN BETTER coffee than Britt's.

One of my favorite countries in the world. A few things to mention Its expensive Its pretty safe I recommend it highly for African Americans. Not only is racism almost not existent, but they have great appreciation for their afro Caribbean population. San Jose gets dark really early. Like 530 pm. A lot of young ticas speak English. They have waterfalls everywhere. Definitely get the fresh juice like he said. You'll never want to go home.

What shocked me when I came to Costa Rica the first time was how diverse the nature is. Costa Rica has about 15 different nature types, dry forests, wet forests, cloud forests, highlands, lowlands, beaches, coral reefs, etc. I'm from Sweden, we have 4-5 different nature types. And there is wildlife EVERYWHERE!!! Loads of birds, frogs, lizards, snakes, butterflies, monkeys. Always bring a bird book and binos with you and always get a window seat on a bus or café. Second thing that shocked me (that's not in the video) is how much there is to do! You can go hiking, surfing, scuba diving, white water rafting, kayaking, zip lining, bungy jumping, horse back riding, climb volcanoes, birding, wildlife/conservation volunteering, go on all kinds of guided tours, city tours, canopy tours, boat tours, sea turtle tours, night tours, day tours, morning tours. You can never be bored in Costa Rica!

Haha. I've been in the South and that's true. Where the in-laws live out in South Dakota, the directions go like this: "Ok, you take highway 54 out to the old schoolhouse. Then you turn right on the gravel road and go until you get to where that giant oak was that blew down in a storm in 1995. There you turn left and follow until you get to the second pasture that Wally Thornton used to own. We're down that road, we forget the name."

I may have mentioned this is a previous video of yours on Costa Rica but one of the things that shocked me about Costa Rica is how easy it is to get sunburned. I remember reading a road sign that said "8th parallel north". It's that close to the equator so make sure to use plenty of suntan lotion, especially light-skinned people.Another thing that shocked me about Costa Rica was all the coffee plantations. For the love of God, have the coffee! It's some of the best in the world!Oh yeah, the Ticos really are that friendly.

Tico is a name that refers to how Costa Ricans refer to small things. For example, "poco" can be made smaller as "poquito"or "poquico" but Ticos use "poquitico". It became so unique, decades ago, that other nations labeled Costa Ricans as "ticos".

Also try guanabana or cas sherbets. They're sort of sweet and sour if you like those flavors. I love them. Only ever saw guanabana in a yard in Hawaii before. Called soursop. You can have those flavors as a fruit drink "natural" when they are in season in many restaurants and informal restaurants called "sodas". Moved here in 1997. There are some bottled versions too but I don't like those nearly as well.

Also the 3 most tyipical food in costa rica are: Casado Gallopinto Olla 'e carne (literally translates as "pot of meat") All of them are delicius and healthy.

Ok I've been living here 8 years so I have a different perspective. It is a visually stunning country as far as the rain forest and some beaches etc. However, as you said the laid back Tico does transform when driving. You hit that one right on the head. Overall it is relatively safe but just be careful with belongings such as cellphones etc. You will get mugged in the middle of the day displaying such items. Other than that and how expensive it is it's a great country.

I visited CR in 2014 and it's absolutely amazing! San José, Escazu, Quepos, Heredia, and more! Your list is correct in my experience. The driving was interesting, where stop signs are more of a suggestion as well! Pura Vida!!!

I’m an ER nurse 30 yrs retired at the age of 50 in my experience as an ER nurse 2 different patients contract parasites from the water in Costa Rica. They both had the same physical complaints. Weight loss, no appetite, diarrhea that smelled worst than a dead animal. How common are these parasites that grow inside your intestines. How common is this and how are the hospitals there.? Please respond. Thank you for the Greece video. Also do you recommend getting medical travel experience insurance?

No surprise there! Costa Rica is known around the world for their protection of nature. Some insane figure like 25% of the country is saved in national parks. I would say the staple in all of Central America is rice and beans. I ran into that in Nicaragua and Honduras back in '98. The 'raccoon' of Central America is the koh-ah-tee(-MOON-dee)--coati(mundi), with the accent on the second. syllable in the shortened version..

actually close to 35% now is protected

We have raccoons, too. I'd say raccons are just as common as Coatimundi, if not more depending on the region. The local name for the Coatimundi is Pizote, if you're ever in Costa Rica.

I really loved Costa Rica and love the idea of going back there. At my hotel they drove my group to places they recommended under Villa Cascada Azul. I love arroz con pollo y ceviche. I'm a coffee nerd and had a blast. Also I'm a seafood fan, and loved mahi-mahi.

The best time to visit is during low season. The whole place and amenities for you. And thieves are less likely to prey on you because they do not see it as open season. The best trick to evaluate a place or restaurant is the 4Bs. Bueno, bonito, barato, bastante. * Bueno. The best places are usually not quite advertised. * Bonito. There are nice and clean places that are not so famous. * Barato. Cheap. You need price awareness to pick a place. *Bastante. Some places think you are rich. Some others do not. So picking those is a real quest that may be rewarding.

As a tico I prefer german beer, although there's this nice Toña nicaraguan beer. Most of my family live in Atenas, my heart will always be there. My grandma used to tell us stories about indigenous craft that they used to find in the mountain, we had this beautiful quartz cluster found in an old mine nearby, and so many nice spooky stories... I had the luck to experience some of this events myself, from super loud sounds, soil lumps coming from nowhere trying to hit us, animal bones organized in a specific way with the ground underneath all mixed up, to even UFOs! San Jose, the capital city, is very dangerous btw.

Hey Wolters... happy to see that you guys finally made it into our small piece of heaven. I am your follower, specially for checking tips while planning our Eurotrips, thank you for sharing all that super valuable info :) Talking about to Costa Rica? yes we have a lot of issues pending to be fixed, and you nailed it in almost everything in your video, but overall most of the visitors can survive that and in return, collect the good stuff and unforgettable memories or even become frequent visitors. Rainy season? yes could be annoying for travelers expecting to see all clear and perfect but without rain we just can not have our magnificent Rainforest. For those wet months is strongly suggested go to the Caribbean side, try that area next time buddy, it's just great in Set-Nov. And BTW try the Rice and Bean there which is a local Afro delicatessen and is different to the Gallo Pinto :) We're a small country and looks like you visited only like 20%? Then you have an excuse to come back to try an taste more of us. PURA VIDA Wolters, hugs for you and your family.
