A nice overall view of Duluth here. Just some minor corrections and additions... 1. It's actually called the Aerial Lift Bridge. The "lift" aspect in the name is important, because that's what it does. Most locals just call it the "Lift Bridge." 2. Canal Park actually is a park. It's the small park by the canal (go figure!) next to the Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center. People sometimes think of canal park as the surrounding area with hotels, shops, and restaurants. But there is indeed a park and that's where people go for ship watching. 3. Ship watching is a BIG part of the Duluth experience. One of the "must see" attractions is watching one of the huge ore carriers come through the canal. Some even exceed 1000 feet in length, longer than the Titanic. 4. In addition to the train rides offered at the Depot, one can also tour the harbor and the lake on the Vista Cruises boat tours, usually lasting 60-120 minutes (depending on the cruise you select). This allows you to travel under the bridge and see Duluth from the lake, which is a highlight. 5. You missed the two main attractions in the Two Harbors area... Gooseberry Falls and Split Rock Lighthouse. Gooseberry Falls is a series of waterfalls within a short walking distance of each other. And Split Rock is considered one of the most picturesque lighthouses on the entire Great Lakes. 6. Glensheen is indeed a well preserved mansion from the 19th Century. Perhaps the most famous (or infamous) aspect of the mansion were the murders that occurred there in 1977. If there ever were murders that imitated an Agatha Christie novel, it was the Glensheen murders. Most of the tour guides don't bring up the murders unless asked about them, and some will refuse to discuss them at all. But they were a fascinating part of Duluth's history that are well worth reading about.

As a former Duluthian and UMD alumni, all tourists must take the Skyline Drive drive during the summer months (part of the road is closed during the winter/spring). Beautiful views, and Seven Bridges Road on the east side of the drive is absolutely gorgeous!

Agreed on Skyline / Seven Bridges. We used to park at the entrance lot closer to UMD campus to look at the leaves (and maybe burn a few, lol), and of course in just a little bit was where the hawks would hang out. Then all of those random little waterfalls and pools on the river as it passed through the bridges. Another highlight is at that sort of wider area where the Hawk Ridge road connects to the 7 bridges road, there's another road leading away from town - go through a few neighborhoods and you reached a county road that went down into a sort of bowl area. This was the ultimate spot to see the Northern Lights - you were pretty close to campus, but had blocked almost all of the light pollution out. I lucked out and saw some great lights most of the time I was up there, one time we were chilling by Goldfine A at one of the picnic tables out front just watching purples, blues, greens, reds... must have been a massive solar storm.

My mom's people are all from Duluth & north to Hibbing. They're getting quite old, and I want to make one more trip up there to visit all the places I loved as a child, and form new memories. Bonde, do you remember the amusement park on Park Point? We could see it all lit up at night from my grandparents' house on Nashua Street.

I'm in Duluth right now so thank you for making this. We visited many of these things our first day and will check out the others the next few days. One thing worth mentioning is the incredible terrain here. You will not believe this is the Midwest with the hills, almost mountains items the city is built on. The fjords to the lake are a big part of the beauty. I'm an architect who worked at a firm that does schools and we collaborated with a local firm about 30 years ago. A colleague told me that Duluth is considered the San Francisco the Midwest, though I've not heard it seen anyone say that but as hilly as the city is that visual should give you a feel of what the city is like. Another popular place to mention is Fengers, we had brunch at a breakfast place to enjoy the lake views and will go back to the brewhouse for dinner soon.

My siblings and I were in Duluth this summer for the Tall Ships Duluth. It was our first time in the city but it somehow reminded me of the Bay Area. Drive across the Blatnik Bridge and you'll feel like driving the Bay Bridge to Oakland. 😊

The North Shore trail is my absolute favorite area of the world. I live close to the Twin Cities but I'll take day trips on the weekends and vacation time to just enjoy it up there. I love being just north of the main part of Duluth and relaxing at Kitchi Gammi park. There's a rock I sit at and watch the day go by. Beautiful scenery. Wonderful atmosphere. I highly recommend checking the park out if you're into nature and getting away from the busyness of life.

I live in Minnesota near Minneapolis and I love going up to Duluth. It is a very family friendly city. It can be seen in a day but you also could spend a few days there. There are two ways to get to Duluth either fly or drive from Minneapolis. It is about a two hour drive from Minneapolis. If you are going to drive the route at night it is imperative that you are comfortable with driving through deer country. Typically deer in Minnesota are not a problem on freeways because there are fences surrounding the freeway helping to keep deer out. But since there is a large deer population along the drive to Duluth you should expect to see deer crossing the freeway in the middle of the night. During the day the drive is pretty relaxed. However on Fridays the drive can be slow because of traffic and on Sundays it can be slow coming back to Minneapolis. I have driven the route in the dark numerous times without incident. However, it is much more relaxed to drive during the day. You need to actively watch for deer from Cloquet to Pine City. Also Duluth is a really hilly city. Some people even put chains on their cars in the winter in order to climb the hills. The federal funded roads such as I35, US 53, and US 2 are significantly better routes climbing the hill. If your driving a manual vehicle it can be difficult to not kill the engine when starting at a stoplight on a hill there. Everyone loves going to Grandmas for food. I'll be honest I don't care for it. The restaurant is moldy smelling and the food was average in my opinion at best. Blackwoods is much better but its not amazing. I just go to Texas Roadhouse; it never disappoints. If you want something unique to do I highly recommend visiting the Spirit Mountain adventure park and riding the Timber Twister Alpine Coaster. It is an alpine coaster not an alpine slide. Therefore, the sled is attached to the track and you can travel at an excessive speed. The coaster gives you a great view of the lake and is incredibly unique and scenic. Although you can travel at any speed try to keep up the pace because carts behind you could potentially not see you going slow and hit your cart. It has happened to me. You can always alert the operator that you plan to go slow so they won't send other carts down so quickly. Also watch for deer going down it I had one run right under the track in front of me. The north shore drive is absolutely beautiful and highly recommend. I recommend at least driving to Two Harbors but there are many sites between Two Harbors and Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. Such as Split Rock lighthouse and Gooseberry Falls.

this ^^ especially the parts about: deer = watch out for them when between the Twin Cities and Duluth on I-35 at night Grandma's = tourist trap. Avoid at all costs, unless you watch to see some kitschy antiques plastered on the ceiling and are willing to be bent over for an average-at-best burger for lunch or similar. Spirit Mountain Timber Coaster - if you hit Duluth during the late spring through mid fall, check to see the hours and if it is open. It's well worth the ride, and it's easy to get to - you take the exit at the top of the hill (I-35) near the rest area, and you're almost there. It's really fun!

I used to live in St. Cloud Minnesota and often went to Duluth for a weekend or a few days off to get away and be close to a large body of water. It is a nice town, and I had a good time there and found the food to be good as well. I enjoyed the Congden Mansion tours on several occasions and actually got to go all the way up to the attic on one tour.

make sure to tour the attic! Yes, the attic. :D It was off limits to tours until pretty recently apparently, but it's astonishing to see. Part of me doesn't want to spoil it, but it's so neat I have to. So from the outside, it looks like some "stately manor". One might think back to old stone construction, and assume such things about Glensheen. Then you see the attic and you realize it was built just like a modern skyscraper is... Lots of steel framework, all really pretty. Roof just attached to the top, as if it was nothing. I guess it shouldn't be that much of a shock after seeing the tour and hearing about how many "modern" things the house had - like wiring and lights in all rooms, central vacuum cleaner system (cute little brass plates on the floor, etc to connect the head to), lots of up to date gear in service quarters, those closets to air out your clothes, etc. It's almost a Disney castle, how you expect so many old things, but for the era it was very ahead of the times.

We live in Bemidji Minnesota and drive over to Duluth a couple times every year. One of our favorite things though, is to drive up north of the city along the Superior North Shore. It's a spectacular drive just by itself, but is dotted with quite a number of state parks all the way up to the Canadian border. Pro tip: If you go in winter all the waterfalls (there are MANY) are all frozen into beautiful sculptures. Last year, when my wife and I went, we saw an otter playing in the open pool under Devils Kettle, it was a magical and quiet moment. You really should come to Minnesota, we love it here for a reason!

that's sad that you went there, as to be honest... anybody from there or had grandparents there, went to college there, etc - we almost universally snickered at both Grandma's by the canal and up at the mall. It used to be really good until maybe the 1980s or so, but then they just started ordering most stuff from Sysco and spitting out food basically the same as any chain would give you. We did, however, go to Jeno's (yeah, the pizza roll guy) other places down there - the "Grandma's Sports Garden" used to have a basketball court that was used most of the time as a dance club; some nights for underage, some with beer served. They used to have a great Halloween costume contest - one year somebody came as a damn xenomorph from Aliens! :D It's great that you lucked out and had a good meal there, but for anybody reading this just understand it's a kitschy tourist trap. Maybe go for lunch, but go to Timber Lodge, Pickwick or someplace better for dinner. Personally, I'd go to Deluxe Coney Island before g-ma's, or drive over the bridge to the little hole in the wall in Superior called the Anchor Bar - their burgers come in many varieties but all are fantastic. :D

Dad was at the Air Base there when I was in 5th & 6th grade. Went there a couple years ago and stayed at the hotel at the base of the bridge where you can watch the boats come in and out of the bay. Yes, winters are brutal but they complain if they don’t get enough snow to do their huge variety of winter stuff. There’s a lot of untapped tourism potential there.

Duluth certainly is beautiful? Were you guys able to make the trek further to the Canadian border on the gunflint trail? A town called Grand Marais is there with an amazing pizza place called Sven and Oles. The town is amazing with tons of little shops right on the lake. My favorite place to visit!

The video leaves out so much! The geography of Duluth is narow and very long, about 15 miles, and sits mostly on a hillside sloping down to Lake Superior. It makes for thrilling bike rides or winter sledding down steep hills. Duluth sits up against an easy to reach countryside with many lakes to enjoy with swimming, waterskiing, fishing, and cabins. Somes lakes are: Island Lake, Pike Lake, Fish Lake, Rice Lake, Caribou Lake. ...A very good place for fishing. Lushious green in the summer. Very colorful in autumn. Lake Superior has a lasting problem with asbestos fiber water pollution from Iron Range mining operation dumping long ago. So the city filters the drinking water.

I grew up in Duluth and it was a nightmare. The winters like you said, are brutal. I don’t mean to be negative, but the winters make it miserable. The economy is very heavily medical and tourist based, which means that the economy is really pigeonholed. The north is most pretty if you want to do free stuff in nature, as Duluth doesn’t really offer much of anything else; once you’ve seen all the tourist spots there’s not much else. Late September and Early October (if warm enough still) is the best time to visit; the trees become magnificent colors in the fall! Don’t wait too long because summer and fall is short, with long winters and slushy springs.

The Northern Waters Smokehaus in the DeWitt-Seitz Marketplace is a Diners Drive Ins and Dives eatery. Get the Pastrami Mommy. To die for. Also, each year in Jan or Feb is the John Beargrease dogsled races. They start in Duluth and go up the north shore. Spectators are welcome at the staging area, and there are dinners and other activities with this event.

There were two families murdered in the glensheen mansion. So its supposed to be haunted . You can also go to enger tower, to get a better view of Duluth. (Stay away from Fond Du Luth Casino) they'll take your money. Don't fall for the people asking for money especially if they say it's for food. There are 3 places that feed those who can't afford food. And shelters, plenty of shelters. If you need a tour guide I'll show you around for free ,cause it gives me something to do . I lived here for 38 years born and raised. But I guess there's always GPS. I have nothing more to add this video pretty much covered everything there is to do here .
