+Private Pyle style I'm not familiar with many guesthouses but Icelanders put a lot of effort to make things great for tourists. Many backpacker hotels are absolutely fantastic even though they are not too pricy. There are countless places to see in Iceland! I've Been on several road trips around the country so you could say I've Ben places haha. But I recommend seeing Ásbyrgi, going to the blue lagoon, seeing gullfoss and geyser(the golden circle). The city life in Reykjavik is also great and there are loads of museums that you can check out. I recommend listasafn Íslands( icelands art museum. Otherwise the tourism is good and Icelanders are always happy to help. :) have a great trip!

Thank you for your comprehensive feedback message. It's good that Iceland is only a three hour and ten minute flight from Britain where I live. It does look wonderful tbf; how long have you been living there for? I've lived in Britain all my life and hope to travel the world more in the future. The Maratime museum looks fascinating about the ships used during the cod wars in the 1970's. Will make the most of the two weeks when we do go! :) It's best to do all the travelling when you are young

There is a very big national identity, and its wonderful how eager you all are to share it with visitors. I loved the pace of Reykjavik: the "no-cars" streets, the flowers, the benches to sit down for a bit. And if you step out to cross the road, drivers are so polite and wave you across. You are a fantastic nation of people in a fantastic country. I want to go back! Thank you for your hospitality. :) :)

Another part that might shock you is that a rather large part of Icelanders believe in elves and 'hidden people'(don't know what it is called in english, huldufólk in icelandic), including me. There are also a large part that don't really believe in those things but they can't say clear no, because it is such a large part of being Icelandic. Like seriously, roads have been moved because the elves weren't happy, and there is a elves village in Hafnarfjörður, where their houses have been mapped by a woman who can see them :) There are many people who can see those elves and the hidden people, my grandfather did for example see the hidden people! :D

I love Iceland! I'm living in Norway at the moment and you are so right about how friendly Icelanders are compared to the rest of the Nordic Countries. I feel like Iceland has the best combo of the Nordics. It is beautiful, the food is pretty good (of course they have their traditional dishes which aren't for the weak stomached), and the people are FRIENDLY AND OPEN! Definitely one of my favourite places I've been to for sure :)

Sometimes I ask myself, wth happen with "Continental" Nordic people, that they're so strange? Actually I got a strong kick in ass from Danish as I thought they'll be so kind, polite, friendly etc. like Icelanders do. I knew that Norwegian or Swedish are not so fine, but Danish really surprised me. Anyway I'd also say I LOVE ICELAND and I don't care other Nordic countries ;)

Wolter , I have been a fortunate man. I have been to Iceland twice now. July 2017 and February 2018. Iceland is so beautiful , and the people so nice, friendly, and caring for the stranger. If you park on the side of the road in isolated areas, invariably an Icelander will stop to make sure that you are ok and that nothing is amiss. Sometimes I cry when I watch these videos of Iceland, yours and others on the net. I guess you might say that Iceland has stolen my heart and I am sad because I am not there. LOL! Island Steinar! That part in which you talk about how the sweaters have a pretty tangible history is absolutely true! And not only the sweaters: some years ago, an icelandic friend of mine gave me a pair of woolen winter mittens that had been made by his grandmother, using wool produced by the sheep some people of his town shepherd. This tradition is so lovely! And the your videos are great! I like it very much how you emphasize the natural beauty of that place.

I was able to spend 4 days in Iceland the last week of February. Fantastic people, beautiful, dramatic, otherworldly landscapes. Everything is NEW. The oldest building I saw was newer than the 120 year old building I live in. I watched the Prime Minister park her car in front of the State house and walk, unaccompanied to the door. We took the Golden Circle tour. One minute, it was blindingly sunny; the next it was a "whiteout" snow with wind gusts. See "the big church on the hill." See the Opera House

Another fact - All the hitch-hikers in Iceland are foreigners and in their 20's. We went to Iceland last year in July/August 2014 and rented a 4x4 vehicle and we picked some hitch-hikers (mainly couples (girlfriend/boyfriend) and one single guy) through out our road trips. All were friendly and none were serial killers !! The ones we picked up came from various countries - France, Czech Republic and Belarus. We mainly drove through Reykjavik and southern Iceland including of course the Blue Lagoon, Geysers, Icebergs and Glaciers.

Please, Please don't drink bottled water in Iceland !!! Its a complete waste of money, its only on the market for tourists, no one in Iceland drinks bottled water. I see tourists here buying bottled water here all the time, and i cringe every time i see it. Total waste of money, its like throwing your money out the window. Our water by the way, is the best water, in my opinion. Don't buy it !!!!!

Tap water in Iceland is pure and totally safe to drink (it may taste sulfur a bit, but it's not critical). Furthermore, you won't find plenty of bottled still water in local stores (only sparkling). However, I had diarrhea for complete 2 weeks while on a roundabout trip on the island. So, I consider this a bit controversial.

We just got back from Iceland, we loved it! We went to the West Fjords, the South, Golden Circle, Reykjavik, and Blue Lagoon. You are right, some places it does feel like a different planet, so awesome. Everyone was very nice. Biggest shocks were all the dang sheep, literally everywhere! Beautiful sheep and beautiful horses. Also a shock was the crazy cost of food, even from regular grocery stores. We hope to go back again.

woltersworld I know a good traveler always learns a little bit of the language of their destination, but how common is English there?

English is widely spoken, and everyone we spoke to spoke is fluent English. Many also speak German, and/or Danish. All road signs are easy to read. Every service station has excellent hot dogs too. Also, you can use your credit card to buy anything (best to have some Krona too, of course). Many people we encountered in service industries were not from Iceland, but from other parts of the EU. Also, women make up roughly half the population and are treated equally in all respects; pay, rights, work equity, etc (they even protested en mass to get these rights). Great place...we will return!

i went to iceland with 2 friends and i must say, what an amazing country! so helpful and so friendly! we went to a few bars and everyone was very welcoming and giving tips what to visit and what not. also the nature is amazing! and ive been all over asia/australia/south america and iceland in my eyes is one of the most beautiful, you get a feeling that the nature is still '' rough and untouched''. i want to say thanks to the people from iceland! also im a big fan of your football team ( and im from the netherlands ) i love the country's dedication and spirit!

It's somewhere around the 15mb/s line (although it does get faster than that) and over 90% of the population has access to it. 97% have access to cell phones and other electronics, as well.

You had a great experience. I lived in Iceland for a couple years. Now I am from the south so maybe that had an effect, but I found Icelanders mostly indifferent. That being said I still loved my time there. Icelandic sweaters are amazingly warm.

Wolter, thanks for the information. It was very helpful to know some of these. I just came back after 5 days' stay and couldn't agree more. Common sensical points well captured. I don't know if it is all icelanders but whoever I spoke to had not travelled much and don't like to leave the island nation. Their horses are beautiful. They are seemed very well educated and the nicest people on earth. I felt the same with Swiss but Icelanders might be a notch more friendly. I have seen your other video as well and it was great as well. What a country!! I want to go back next year for 3 weeks and cover the whole country on a bicycle.

I would like to visit Reykjavik and the surrounding areas. However I am vegan, for health reasons and I adore animals. Are there many vegan options. I found there are in Denmark where 10% of the population is vegetarian. Are there health food stores in Reykjavik where I can buy vegan cheese, and healthy snacks. I found London had tons of healthy restaurants. The Whole Foods in Kensington although very expensive had far more variety of vegan options than I have seen in the US or Canada. Thank-you for your answer, I look forward to it.

I will post it to other vegan sites I know of, for other vegetarians/vegans or flexitarians (eat some meat, but largely vegetarian) should anyone else be considering Iceland. Now that countries like the US's new Dietary Guidelines recommend to eat less meat/dairy in favor of a plant based diet, to prevent strokes, heart disease and various kinds of cancer as well as to promote optimal health people increasingly are looking for vegan restaurants. I'm vegan too and visited Reykjavik back in October. I found that buying food from the local supermarket for lunch and eating in a restaurant in the evening was the way to go. we visited this amazing little cafe calls cafe bablu. it had many vegan options and even vegan cake for dessert! we also had soup in the evenings. our hotel served breakfast every morning so we stocked up on fruit and toast etc..hope this helped!

im icelandic and tourism is ruining this country i hate it its ok when people come but now the government sees a huge profit in it and now if you go downtown reykjavik you will mostly se tourists its like 3 out of every 10 people are actually locals and they are also ruining old houses downtown and they took away the only giant parking lot in the downtown area you can barely get to stay there on a car anymore and the reason why you might ask. well do build a goddamn hotels everywhere you go there building hotels every corner of every street a goddamn hotel and its making a lot of locals furious sure were friendly but this is slowly ruining the local life of reykjavik and i think il finish my rant now. also i do not mean this as an argument starter this just how i feel
