Overview
Narai-juku is the 34th post town out of 69 on the Nakasendo road, located in Shiojiri City, Nagano Prefecture. During the Edo period, it flourished to the point of being called "Narai Senken," and is known as the busiest post town among the eleven Kiso post towns.
History
Narai-juku has flourished as a post town since the Kamakura period. During the Edo period, it served as an important rest stop for travelers and merchants traveling along the Nakasendo road. It was also a route for the Kiso Fukushima domain's alternate attendance system, so many samurai visited it.
Places to see
The greatest attraction of Narai-juku is its beautiful streetscape that retains the atmosphere of the past. With rows of merchant houses and inns from the Edo period, you can experience the feeling of having traveled back in time. Narai-juku has also been designated as a nationally designated Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, and many historical buildings remain.
