As a teenager, I was in one of these cells, luckily the magistrate threw the case out with a conditional discharge..but the cells were grimier in real life than here! The wooden bench had graffiti scratched in, one I remember was 'Isa loves Heroin'. Not being able to see out was horrible, I think the cells were underground.

Another great Utube posting - thanks so much Katie and many congratulations on everything including the new badge. History of the police is not a topic that particularly interests me but you have fired me up to see this museum!!

I am very excited to visit the museum 🤩. Also I can not believe how "open" the Dock was from those pictures.

The Custodian Helmet is the headgear traditionally worn by male police constables and sergeants while on foot patrol in England and Wales. Officers of all ranks in most forces are also issued a flat, peaked cap that is worn on mobile patrol in a vehicle. Ranks above sergeant wear the peaked cap only. However, some Inspectors wear the Custodian Helmet, but with two silver bands around the base (to match the two pips worn as rank insignia) to denote their position. Claimed by some sources to have been based on the spiked pickelhaube worn by the Prussian Army, it was first adopted by the London Metropolitan Police in 1863 to replace the "stovepipe" top hat worn since 1829. In 1863, the Metropolitan Police replaced the previous uniform of white trousers, swallow-tailed coat and top hat in favour of very dark blue trousers, a more modern button up tunic and the early type of helmet which had an upturned brim at the front and a raised spine at the back, running from the bottom to the top of the helmet, which became known as the "cockscomb".

Hey Katie. I hope to pay it a visit this weekend. I’ve been waiting for it to open. I’ll watch your video after my visit though, just in order to avoid spoilers!

I have a particular interest in the early days of the Bow Street police as my direct ancestor George Vaughan, a horse patrol officer, was involved in corruption. He was tried in 1816 in the Old Bailey along with a few others and he spent 5 years in jail at Coldbath Fields. From my research he turned out to be quite a shady character. He started off well though as he was servant to both Sir Nathanial Conant and Judge Edward Christian (the brother of Fletcher Christian of the Bounty).

The Pankhurst are OVER it in that photo. I feel like, if thought bubbles were a thing, you’d be able to read “don’t come for me unless I call for you.”

This is awesome, can't wait to go there! Are visitors allowed to see the cells that are on the hotel's premises?

They seem to be converting more and more places in London into hotels. Admiralty Arch is to be a hotel, the Corinthian in Northumberland Avenue was previously government offices the Renaissance hotel at Kings Cross, will all these hotels be needed I wonder, in our post-covid society. Will tourist want to flock back to London, in enough numbers to fill all these hotels.
