you said mexico is just this great place but what you forgot to warn the peoiple about is the cartel that runs everything from the police to the internet ..and how they can hold some americans hostage if you go over there..so mostly you want to stay away from there espically mexico city.which im sure you didnt visit because you already know that the only safe place is cancun but idek how you managed to make it there and back safe. .

I've been to Mexico twice now: once to Tijuana and once to Mexico City. Both cities are awesome! I love going from stand to stand and trying all the food, checking out the sights, getting stared at by locals because of my complexion, speaking with the locals (de acuerdo en español), etc. For any tourists who might be fearful: don't be. Sure, no one can guarantee that nothing will happen to you, but as long as you're aware and take the necessary precautions, you'll have a good time.

I never drive when I go to Mexico. You have to buy Mexican car insurance but if you're in an accident you can end up in the the can. Public transportation or walking is the way to go. When changing money I go right to the bank (yea...it's a long wait), the local Casa de Cambio, or the man on the street corner. :D

Knowing Spanish helps. When I went to Honduras with a gang for a wedding I didn't really enjoy it, but 3 of the gang speak Spanish and they loved it. They got good prices on stuff and have that edge you need in southern countries.

Excellent video as usual, Mark. Glad you went over the currency notes and coins...very underrated travel tip. The ATMs give as many $500 MXN as possible so remember to break those immediately because most street vendors and many small shops will not have change. Certainly, your taxi driver will never have change. I broke my $500s every day at 7-Eleven buying my water and full sugar Colas! 😀👍 By the way, one of the the 7-Elevens at the airport tried to give me a torn $50 MXN as part of my change. Be careful because these may not be accepted elsewhere. Not saying he did this intentionally but this is a well known travel scam all around the world. I had to wait a minute for another customer because he claimed he could not open the cash register to replace the note.

Thank goodness I was born and raised in SoCal. My high school was 95% Mexican, so I grew up with my Mexican bff's grandma making homemade tamales every Christmas and friends bringing homemade enchilada and chile con carne leftovers for lunch and letting me try them! There's a place down in Chula Vista about 15 minutes from Tijuana called Tacos El Gordo and omg it's so real that they don't use lettuce or chicken, they only make meat dishes with only beef like a carne asada dish and pork (when I was dating my ex we last went in December and he got the adobada which is pulled pork on a corn tortilla with your choice of fresh toppings). Try a mulas! If you're ever down here in SoCal head down to Chula Vista in San Diego and stop at Tacos El Gordo, I think there are a few other SD locations, but that is the only one I've been to.

Allan Mitchell Although I do recommended that if you want to get to know the real Mexico you should visit Guanajuato, San Miguel de Allende or Querétaro. They are among the most beautiful and cultural cities with spanish colonial architecture dating back to the 16th century. Cancún is gorgeous but it's like going to an American city in a way.

Been traveling in and out of MX for 40+ years. Great advice to learn some Spanish...Only hostility I ever experienced was when trying to leave my laundry and trying to find when it would be ready.. Young man shouted " why not you learn Spanish."🌝 He was right. Hola, Si, Buenas Dias,Muchas gracias and No gracias as a minimum. People in MX are the best. Beautiful, friendly, helpful. I spend time in PLAYA..Negotiate, Negotiate, negotiate. I never pay more than $5-$7. Heard stories of paying $12-$20 for same trip.

I spent 10 days in Mexico City and Cuernavaca this January for a graduate school class at George Mason University through the Cemanahuac Spanish School. It was a blast: the history, the food, the culture, the people, you name it (one location we got to visit was Jose Cuervo Headquarters in Mexico City!). While Mexico City isn't necessarily known for being a tourist destination, which is a shame because they have a good number of wonderful museums such as the Anthropology Museum and the Palace of Fine Arts. I hope to see one of your top 5 love and hate videos made about Mexico City and/or Cuernavaca for comparison reasons as I am hoping to visit this great nation again. Hey there! I received the travel guide (Eyewitness Travel guide from DK) about going to Mexico just this past Christmas as a gift! It shows pretty much the same as what you've shown in this video, but you added some detail that the guide doesn't have, and it also has quite a few things, especially attractions, that you never even mentioned in this video, like Mazatlan is just across the Sea of Cortez from Cabo, a destination you have mentioned multiple times in this video! Thanks for the explanation! I'd like you to get a copy of DK Eyewitness Travel's guide to traveling around Mexico, and read it (if you can). It's a really detailed, very good travel guide, just go over it a couple times, you'll understand it. Now, of course, this is RJ Smith reporting this, and I've never been to Mexico, just wanted to mention the travel guide to you. However, I was also just thinking, why do so many Americans also live in Mexico at least part of the year (over one million)? There's a lot of good reasons why people think of vacationing in or moving to Mexico, and yes, one of the first things to mention as a concern is safety.

In the US ATMs are absolutely everywhere but I could not find one in Mexico City. Take lots of pesos with you. The hotel did exchange dollars for pesos but sometimes ran short.

+random dilettante 🤔 What are you talking about?! I spent two weeks in CDMX and returned this week. ATMs everywhere...on the main well travelled avenues as well as side streets. I spent time in most of the colonias (neighborhoods) and saw banks and ATM kiosks at every turn.

I said *I* couldn't find them so will fully admit the problem is likely me. Any tips on how to spot them? Once I was in a truly lovely train station/bus station/travel plaza with kiosks and a food court - still did not find one. What am I missing? Edit: at that travel plaza I did stand in line for a machine labeled "Cajero" but it turned out to be only a coin/bill changer.

+random dilettante Go to the high traffic streets you should have planned to visit anyway like Paseo de la Reforma (beautiful stroll), Av. Juarez (main street next to Alameda Central), Av. Presidente Masaryk (main street Polanco), Av. Obregon (Roma Norte), etc. and look for the country's main banks. Banorte, HSBC, Santander, BBVA were the ones I saw everywhere. The kiosks are all glass with multiple ATMs and often with a security guard but during the day when there's a lot of businesspeople running around doing their daily routine, security is not an issue.

Have been to Mexico many times and you are spot on...One additional thing - if you rent a car, make sure they record ALL damage on your rental vehicle. Second, make sure the pump is at 0 when you get gas. They fill your tank for you and if they are not at 0, you will pay extra...

Hi Mark! I have a question, how difficult do you think it is to get around the non-touristy parts of Mexico when you don't know how to speak Spanish aside from a few phrases?
