Ok! A little explanation about tips in restaurants. In Poland there is no tradition of tipping because it is assumed that a waiter is an employee and has a salary for his work and his duty is to serve the customer well, but for example if the meal cost 90 PLN and you have 100 PLN and you give the 100 PLN to the waiter and say thank you, the waiter treats it as a tip, but if you don't say thank you he will give you change from 100 PLN. Poles are not offended by this Eastern Europe, but they do not want to be associated with it - they know where this term from the times of the Iron Curtain comes from and that is how it has become entrenched.

#1. Don't try to enter the country without legal papers. Poles are not amused...

Thanks for the heads up! Those are great additions-Poland definitely doesn’t mess around with crossing on red or sipping an alcoholic beverage outside of the designated spots. It’s all about staying on the right side of the law while enjoying this beautiful country. Cheers for the tip!

Each country has its own unique culture, traditions and habits. When Poles know that they are tourists, they look at certain blunders with understanding, but they will certainly not be lenient, especially for tourists from England who run around naked under the influence of alcohol and urinate in public, Poles look at this with distaste, having a different idea of the culture of the English. They will certainly have a soft spot for such behavior with the Police.

I have to comment on the part about tipping. This custom is relatively new in Poland, and it is definitely not obligatory. It came to Poland along with Western habits and quickly became popular. Giving a tip is an expression of appreciation for the work of a waiter or hairdresser, but refraining from doing so is not rude or offensive. It is also not a violation of common rules because such rules do not exist yet even in the capital of the country. Tipping is definitely an expression of your goodwill. Probably, coming from a Western culture, you will feel obliged to tip, so this text is a bit pointless...

" it's an expression of appreciation"... And then it becomes mandatory.... And then your base salary stays low because " you've made so much in tips".... And then "we offer jobs with shit salary but you will earn more in tips"... What a great destination we're going towards. Congrats!

Tipping became popular? Where? I never see tipping in Trojmiasto happening. And tipping a hairdresser? Lol what...

About #1. What do I do/say when Polish people refer to Poland as Eastern europe? I encountered this a few times, even though I still consider Poland as Central Europe.
@allthekingsbooks2 ай бұрын
The part about the tipping is completely incorrect and is just American habit. I've been living for 10 years in Poland and have been eating out once a week or bi-weekly, and never ever have I been asked for a tip or even been looked at strangely if I did not tip. And most of my restaurant visits are in the touristic areas of Sopot, Gdansk and Gdynia so if anywhere tips would be expected, I would have heard about this. Poland has no tipping culture, it is not customary whatsoever, none of my Polish friends or family members tip, YOU are not expected to tip, and 99% of waiters will have no problem at all with you not tipping. They are paid relatively decent salaries after all.
