Visiting Sevilla is a joy. I love the city and recommend it for anyone coming to Spain to check out. Here are my five loves and hates about one of the best cities to visit in Spain, Sevilla (Seville).

If you think Seville is expensive you are doing it wrong. Last time I was there (my wife is from Seville) we spend 50 euros each, from Lunch to 5 in the morning. Lunch, Tapas, Dinner, Drinks, Cocktails. Just research on Trip adviser and stay away from the Tourist traps.

From Scotland and lived in Seville for a year, the 'things you'll hate about Sevilla' are complete rubbish, as a young woman living here I never felt in any risk or danger, didn't experience pickpocketing once. Also I have travelled all over Spain and Sevilla is one of the cheapest cities of them all...especially for how beautiful and developed the city is, beers can be from around €0,60 to just over €2 depending where and when you go. Only thing marginally agree with in terms of 'downsides' is the heat of the summer but that is easily avoidable by going to nearby coastal cities such as Huelva (only 40 mins away) Cádiz or Malaga.

I know this is an older post , but even if the pickpocketing as described in parts of Spain can happen, whats the best ways of watching your pockets or hiding money and wallets. For me, backbacks and money belts are a giveaway.

You do not need a car in Sevilla. It's a hinderance. Walk, or take cabs. Parking is very hard and the streets are a complex maze. Forget the car.

As a Spanish guy I have to say, that the description of the city is quite average and reasonable, althought I don´t share the feeling of living under such a extreme danger of being thieved by a pickpocket. Maybe because as a local I´m not the kind of target that those people are looking for; I can quite understand that the point of view may be pretty diferent for visitors. It freaks me out also to hear that Seville is more expensive that others places in Spain. It depends a lot which Spanish places you mean. The rest of south spain is not as expensive as Seville, that´s true, but if you go somewhere else in the coast or mainland Spain the prices are gonna be highers for sure. Also if you avoid the most popular (And overpriced) places in the town you will be perfectly able to get reasonabes prices. Agree with everything you´ve said about heat and traffic. Thanks a lot for sharing your opinión and your lovely words about the city.

I agree. Bodega Santa Cruz must be the busiest and best bar in town and my first stopping point every time I visit Sevilla, whilst it isn't expensive. For someplace central, so close to the cathedral, you would expect to pay more - but since it's full of Sevillanos you don't. Perfect!

It's been 37 years since I lived in Spain. I lived first in Puerto de Santa Maria & then on the Navel Base in Rota. As I recall the hottest weather was during the Levantes which are infrequent in comparison to Texas summers where we have 100+ days for 60 to 90 days in a row without too much cool down at night. I remember going to Sevilla in the summer when family visited. It was brutal, but one of the things I loved about Spain is that in the evening everyone came out. I love Spain!

Seville is a safe city by day and night, but of course there are people who try to take advantage of tourists, like everywhere. Be wary of anyone approaching you without having you order, offering nonsenses, places to visit o guide you. But confide without hesitation when you ask the local people. The people are friendly and like to help.

Ok, as an Spanish guay that lives in Seville I agree about the heat, and the parking, but pick pockets are only when the holy weeks come, and there are a lot of peopl in small strees. But living here isn't too expensive for Spanish people, the expensive thigs are hotels, or other things related to tourism Anyway, I agree with the video, but You should viisit places like Nervion, San Bernardo or La buhaira, interesting places far from historic zone.

Traffic in Sevilla is not particularly chaotic, but parking can be a problem itself. It is best not to use the car if you are not going to use it to visit other surrounding cities. The historic city, where you will spend most of the time, is relatively manageable walking and cars can not get into it. Also, by car, you will miss the best thing that Seville can offer you: just walk around and enjoy the buildings, the enviroment, the atmosphere, the small bars and taberns, orange blossom smelling..

I went there every year for a Month in Summer for 10 years as I was married to a Spanish Girl. It is amazing, its hot true but that is why there is Siesta as everyone rests eats etc during the hottest time of the day. It is daylight out til 10 or later so when work resumes at 5 or so things are open much later and people stay out later. Pickpockets are everywhere but just be careful on Buses and trains and Train stations and beware of the Gypsys . There are so many beautiful places to see in Seville alone. Its not that expensive and there is no need to drive anywhere. Pick a centrally located hotel and leave your car parked and walk or take the bus everywhere. Stay near Plaza de Armas, there is a big bus station there and you can get everywhere walking.

I lived near the coast in Puerto de Santa Maria, for 3 years. On several occasions I drove to Seville & one time got lost in the maze of one way streets. I we passed a police officer in a traffic circle at least five times, the third, fourth & fifth time he waved at us, the sixth time he stopped us & asked us where we were trying to go. Thanks to him we finally found our way to El Corte Inglés which was way on the other side of town, but I didn't know how to get out of the circle.

I'm from Seville, and I loved your video :) I would also add that you could do summer-sports on the river, you could go to the gym which is just beside the river (with a tennis field included), you can have a 2-day city tour ticket for 15 euros, you can also go for 1h cruise on the small ferries they have on the river and join the large groups in the bars whenever there's a football match, while enjoying a beer or a tapa. Furthermore, teenagers freely sing and dance on the streets every day :))

I'm from Cadiz, 120 miles south, but I have lived for years in Seville. I'm agree with most of Walter's tips. Never visit Sevilla between June and August. The heat is unbearable even for the Andalusians. During the summer it is best to visit Malaga, Cadiz or Granada, where the weather is around 30 degrees during the day and 20 at night. Seville and Cordoba, probably the two most beautiful cities with Granada, be visited during the spring, when the weather is still bearable.

i live in seville. yes its hot during the summer up to 55 degrees. but it is not expensive. shots and beers are 1euro. 1 litter of beer is around 1.20 euro in the shops. yes there are tourists but not as many tourists as barcelona or madrid. food is cheap or relatively cheap. it's only "expensive" if you go to the obvious touristic restaurants. and pickpockets? yes i know, every city there are pickpocketers,to be honest its not like barcelona. in barcelona people will literally bump into you.

I studied in Sevilla for half a year and the only thing I didn't like about the city was the public transportation. In comparison to my hometown (Vienna) it was just so much more ineffective and it felt like every route that I had to go was at least 30 minutes. But because of that I got to explore the city by foot and that's simply amazing when you consider how beautiful it is. I also liked the weather (I left at the start of July tbf.) and the people are amazing. If I had the opportunity to go back, I would do it in a heartbeat, but in the job I chose it's not so easy to just go and work abroad unfortunately. Also I couldn't believe how cheap it was. I paid like 600€ for an 80m² flat at Calle Betis and in the tapas bar around the corner a small beer was 1,20€. Overall I feel like life cost me 1/3 less than it does in Vienna even though I spent money on things I usually wouldn't do at home.

Born and bred in Sevilla, everything you say, excepto for the proceso (Madrid's much worse, as in Barcelona and San Sebastiano) oh and the pickpockets are unfortunately all from other places and not from Sevilla city) is true! I absolutely love my beautiful, though imperfecto city above all else in the world. In second place, the divine London. This comes from a personas who's half Spanish, half Americano and forced for work reasons to live in another city. But Sevilla is my soul.

The city can be expensive compared to the rest of Andalusia prices, but it is very cheap compared to the cities of the north and east of Spain. Avoid the tourist circuits and find places where you hear the Spanish language. Prices will seem ridiculous there to a northeuropean or northamerican. You can eat and drink great food and wine easily for 15 euros person and you will enjoy the sevillian atmosphere better than the fancy restaurants.

You might have gone to expensive places for tourists, but if you ask someone you can go to cheap and really good places (often better than tourists ones ;)

A) I got robed in london twice! You just have to be careful as any other big city in the world. B) You will NOT get lost in Seville. There is plenty of trafic signs, even more clear and understandable than other maypr Europen cities. C) There is lots of cheap Parkings everywhere in the city, cheaper than in london or N.Y. for sure! 60 cents an hour...os that expensive?? I think not. And the more time to put into the parking meter, the cheaper it gets! Fantastic! I will continue...

Cant really agree on Seville being expensive, I've lived in Barcelona, Madrid, Bilbao, Valencia, and every time I go back home I was looking forward eating out cuz it was so cheap!! If you can move out of the city centre es even cheaper! Rest of the things, I agree, weather is a nightmare, traffic is difficult, and you may get robbed, but Barcelona & Madrid was much more insecure. Im also ashamed that the way we treat tourists is not very good in the very center, every time I get some friends visiting I prefer to eat outside the center, food is bad and expensive, I even used tripadvisor to look for good places (I ve spent too long outside seville and Im losing track, thath's why)

So this is one of the reasons Spanish people always go out late at night, around midnight is the right time to go party. (in the south). Regards

Good analysis. Went to Sevilla in 2009 with a college group. A couple guys got in a tiff with some local boys who were trying to pick-pocket---one classmate took a bottle to the head when chasing after those boys. So, BE CAREFUL. As for nightlife/fun/exploration---an entire summer wasn't even enough. So much to do in the city. Don't neglect travelling to Lagos, Portugal. A smaller trip to definitely do is Cadiz on the coast. Just approx. 20 Euros for round trip!

I think the only thing correct about this video is the comment about the weather. Seville is in the south of Spain, which therefore 99.9% of the year has the best weather in the entire country. It IS very hot during the summer months. April and May are probably the best times to go. With that said in April the have Semana Santa and Feria de Avril, which are one of the most beautiful and special festivities people can part take in Seville. This can cause some price increases. Food & Cost - If you go to tourist bars and restaurants, you will get tourist prices which are more expensive. If you go to local bars and restaurants, they are SUPER CHEAP! BEER is cheaper than water. I've spent 60 euros and fed 4 people very well at a local restaurant and that was including tips and drinks. Pick pocket - it happens every where, Paris and Italy probably more. Just be smart and be careful. I haven't had anything of mine stolen and I frequently go to Sevilla as my husband is from there. Tourists - If you go to a tourist city during tourist peak season, you will have larger volumes of tourists. DUH? Parking - if you are looking for a parking spot directly in front of a bar or restaurant, you probably won't find it. Most locals park in Corte Ingles or a larger parking lot and then walk. There are plenty of large parking lots in Sevilla and you will want to walk, enjoy the weather and people instead of wasting your time finding a close parking spot.

miss0enigma Can you please advise how a visitor can find some good local restaurants and bars? Specific places, restaurants, websites/apps, etc? Thanks!

Trying to decide on Spain or Italy. I'm not sure if I would blend in. I'm 1/2 Mexican with french, German, Italian, and Spanish. My maiden name is Arellano my father's side came from Spain so I would like to see it. I'm just not excited about getting mugged or pick pocketed. EEK! Maybe I should just take a cruise and see both?

Hei, I am from Sevilla and what I know is that in both places, Italy and Spain (big cities) there are pick pocketed. But just keep your eyes on your things. Italy or Spain, I think both are fantastic countries, full of history and art.

Yes, I'd even recommend you Seville (and Spain) rather tan Italy if you are afraid of being pickpocketed, mugged or just swindled. Just be a little careful, anyway the crime rates are far far away from the enormeous crime rates of many áreas of Mexico. And of course Spain is cheaper than Italy, and I think that may very important for an average Mexican budget. But if you love art, architecture and history Italy is the number one in Europe, definitely.

Have been to Texas in the summer & it’s terribly hot but no worse than summers in the Midwest….my rule for traveling in the summer is pretty simple: always go someplace cooler & save the destinations w/hot summers for spring or fall.

Good to know you agree! Haha. Well, my buddy did have his cell phone and wallet stolen and he required about a dozen stitches to his forehead/hairline area. Everybody should know, he was down by the river, with a friend, both drunk, around sunrise. So the only others in that area were those kids. At least they weren't armed with anything more than those bottles! I will subscribe because you mentioned it.

And about the tourist hordes, obviously you will see them if you visit the touristic places like Plaza de España, where's Wolters is doing his video. But Seville does not belong to tourist, belongs to sevillians. The Andalusians spend most of their free time on the street, walking, eating, drinking or sitting in a park chatting. The atmosphere in the center of Seville, excluding some streets, is mostly Andalusian, not touristy.

I visited Spain about 10 years ago and the strangest thing happened. I wanted to go to the Bullfighting and bought a ticket at the stadium. I was early, so when it was showtime I returned to the stadium but was immediately pointed to a Police Car, placed in the back wherby the Cops demanded money from me. They took me to a square where we sat while they pondered what to do with me. All the time they were asking constantly for cash. Eventually they just took me back to my hotel unharmed.

Lived in Spain for three years, knew lots of people who lost cameras, wallets, purses from thieves in Seville. In fact on Mothers Day we were at the Plaza De Espana and someone snatched a woman's purse and started running, my husband and another guy tackled him and held him until the police arrived. 5 months is nothing sweetie, you were just lucky not to have been robbed.
