We are in Tungkualin Noy in Nyot Ou District, Phongsaly Province, Laos. This is one of the villages we're working with as consultants for the CCL (Laos Cooperation Comittee).
They have recently built a small tea processing unit in the village, after a bried introduction, we have a discussion with the mayor about the recent developments and the perspectives and challenges brought by tea cultivation.
The interview is in Chinese, please activate the subtitles...
More information about the project here: ccl.exposure.c...
Visit our website: www.-farmer-leaf.com
Teas from this village will be available later on our website.

I really like this farmer, he has a very genuine, open hearted aura. He appears excited to produce high quality tea that sells at a premium!

William, this is highly interesting that you let us take part on your activities .... just imagine when we can watch a video in maybe six years with his son already good and experienced at harvesting and withering greater amounts of tea telling us how good the infrastructure has developed .... this shows us how important it is to have a vision .... Greetings from Germany.

I hope life will take a good turn for those farmers, they weren't privileged at the start but the tide is turning thanks to this new demand for high quality pu-erh tea.

We will send a newsletter when the teas will be available. It will take more time because we're going to press them in Laos to train the staff in the small factory we've established there.

I just broke into my 100 g. Tungkualin Noy cake this evening. I'm glad I saved watching this video till now. William, I am very impressed with the tea. One of the sweetest shengs I've had in a while. Also, it has surprisingly good chaqi for an autumn harvest. I hope there will be more tea on Farmer Leaf coming from this village in the future!

A most interesting video William. Here is to the hope that the areas station in life can improve with Tea. I hope the families will band together and not sign any long-term contracts for the tea- of course some kind of contract is inevitable but, As conditions improve (and having a dedicated drying and storage area is critical) The farmers hopefully can build their reputation and quality and get more for their tea.

Contracts are typically used when the head cost is high, for example, rubber trees need to grow for six years before generating any income, that's why agricultural companies provide the finance for that if the farmers can't get a loan on their own. When it comes to tea, contract farming wouldn't make sense there because they already have a tea production, and there is a demand for more tea. They expand the tea on forests, which means the growing tea plants don't compete with other crops, it only requires a bit of extra work on top of the training and seedlings the NGO provided.
