Come with me for a visit to Aurovalley, the iconic ashram created based on the philosophy of Sri Aurobindo and his spiritual partner French-born Mirra Alfassa, affectionately called The Mother by her disciples.
“What Sri Aurobindo represents in the history of the earth’s spiritual progress is not a teaching, not even a revelation; it is a mighty action straight from the Supreme.” - From the book “The Supreme Knowledge” published by Sri Aurobindo Ashram Trust in 1997
Sri Aurobindo (1872 - 1950) was an Indian philosopher, yogi, maharishi, poet, journalist, and Indian nationalist. He joined the Indian movement for independence from British colonial rule. Until 1910 was one of its influential leaders, and then became a spiritual reformer, introducing his visions on human progress and spiritual evolution.
He studied for the Indian Civil Service at King's College, Cambridge, England. Upon his return to India, he was arrested, convicted and imprisoned for writing articles against British colonial rule in India. During his 1-year stay in the jail, he had mystical and spiritual experiences, after which he moved to Pondicherry, leaving politics for spiritual work. At Pondicherry, he met Mirra Alfassa who was to become his spiritual partner and intellectual equal. Sri Aurobindo developed a spiritual practice he called Integral Yoga. The central theme of his vision was the evolution of human life into a divine life in divine body. He believed in a spiritual realisation that not only liberated but transformed human nature, enabling a divine life on earth. In 1926, with the help of his spiritual collaborator, Mirra Alfassa (referred to as "The Mother"), Sri Aurobindo Ashram was founded.
The Aurovalley Ashram in this video was founded years later by Swami Brahmdev who has dedicated his life to live and share the legacy of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother.
Mirra Alfassa was born in Paris in 1878. Her father was from Turkey and her mother from Egypt. Between the ages of 11 and 13 she had a series of psychic and spiritual experiences. She went to Algeria to study occultism under Max Theon and his wife. Although she was married, at the age of thirty-six, in 1914, she felt a calling and came to Pondicherry to meet Sri Aurobindo and at once recognized in him the one who had been guiding her spiritual development. After six years of silent spiritual development, in 1926 when Sri Aurobindo founded the Ashram in Pondicherry, The Mother was entrusted with the full material and spiritual direction of the Ashram. The Mother left her body in 1973 at the age of ninety-five.

Sri Aurobindo sought independence from the British in peaceful ways? He made bombs and hurled at the British.

You are correct that Sri Aurobindo’s team of revolutionaries used some violence against members of the British government when fighting for their freedom. That’s what revolutionaries do to get back control of their country. But Sri Aurobindo’s main tool was his word, by writing in magazines and newspapers to inspire the youth of India to boycott and be psychologically independent from any foreign-imposed domination, in this case the British government. That’s what I’m referring to in my video. Sri Aurobindo was primarily a Yogi, a philosopher, a realized awakened being. He said: “If there is truth in non-violence, there must also be a truth in violence.” Invading a country by force like the British did in India is the worst form of violence. In this case, Sri Aurobindo’s attempted military strategies were justified to gain total freedom and independence.
