It replaced a wooden church which was on the site up until the Norman conquest 1050. The sea did not wash the church away, it washed the chancel only away in 1833 and it continued to be used until 1859 where the Royal charter gale caused further damage. It was decided at this time to demolish the church as the sea was regularly entering the church on high tides and so in 1860 all but the bell tower were dismantled and the stones were used to substantiate the sea defences. The altar was moved to the new St Branachs Church in Bryn Henllan. It's more of a demolition site rather than tragedy.
