"Estoy intentado planear unos días en Guadalajara cuando vengan mis amigos." This is one of the reasons why Spanish is so difficult, at least for an English speaker. We just don't speak this way. I tried to look for the literal translation, even with Google translate it seems quite vague. Then you get "I'm trying to plan a few days in Guadalajara when my friends come." But that could mean that you only want to do the planning with them when they come over to your house, not necessarily that you want to go on a trip/vacation with them. Which I feel is the intended meaning here. Spanish also has the subjunctive, a verb tense that we simply don't use in English. There are many other tenses/moods as well. And if that in itself is not taxing enough, on top of that you have countless conjugations for every tense/mood. Combine that with all kinds of false friends and the generally lightning fast pace of the spoken language and the picture is complete. Pure confusion for a Spanish learner. At first I thought it was just me because I had had 3 years of Spanish in grade school, but never picked up/mastered the language. Even though I passed the classes, I gained almost nothing at the end of it all. I couldn't understand a spoken conversation or read a random piece of text. In the beginning I thought, I just don't have a talent for languages, my strengths and skills lie elsewhere. But in my later adult years, when I was 28 years old, I started studying Dutch and within a year and a half I had mastered the language. In fact, I had mastered this language so well that I even became a professional translator for this language even though it was not my native language. A few years later I added German to my repertoire and mastered this as well, even though I was not as strong in it and could not write or speak in it. So it definitely wasn't my fault or that I was stupid or had no talent for languages that I couldn't learn Spanish. I think it was because both Dutch and German are Germanic languages, just like my mother tongue, English. That's why I managed to pick up these languages and not Spanish. Moreover, Spanish is spoken at a lightning fast pace, especially when compared to German or Dutch. There are certain processes in your brain in which your brain cells quickly activate for a language from your own language family, but become difficult for one that does not belong to it. That's my conclusion. No regrets, and I respect any language just the same.
