Visiting Kaunas, Lithuania | Travel guide from a local

Hello everyone and welcome to Kaunas - the second largest city in Lithuania. I'm so exited to make this video because I grew up in Kaunas and want to show you all what the city has to offer.
Some of the famous places are: Kaunas gothic old town and centre, Pažaislis monastery and Kaunas reservoir with a yacht club, old city funiculars, numerous museums and galleries including museum of Lithuania's most famous painter and composer M. K. Čiurlionis, and a quirky Devil's museum. In Kaunas you can also learn a lot about soviet past from its unique shops and cafes still left in the centre, and 9 fort museum which is infamous for its role in the second world war.

I spent 4 nights at the Kaunas Hotel in 2022 whilst my husband was having surgery. I visited a few of the places you mentioned. What an absolutely beautiful city, thank you for the tour.

All is exceptionally clean and bright. I like the diversity of options and the open feeling. The intimacy of the well proportioned shops , houses is attractive year round . The icecube cold blue church illumination is what I want to see. The long rectilinear boulevard with these shady trees looks unique to me. I really hope to make it once to Kaunas from Nederland. I would probably stay 3 days or so ........😊

The smaller one Neris river flows into the bigger river Nemunas so after the confluence only Nemunas still flows down to the Curonian Lagoon.

Thank you for this beautiful and informative video. I am from the US and of Lithuanian heritage. I've been trying to learn more about where I came from and I am aware that Kaunas was for a time the Capital of LT, when the Polish occupied Vilnius. Anyway, I hope to be in Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipeda and Saiuliai in mid-August. Thanks so much for your video, you've given me some great ideas for places to visit in Kaunas! I have a great-great grandfather who was born in Kaunas in 1883 and immigrated to the US in 1905. Is there any way to try to find out information or records about them at a place in Kaunas, if/when I am able to visit?

It's not easy. If you have at least some kind of information about him that could help, churches might have some records. There also are a few websites like genmetrika.eu that has lots of records online, but the website is in Lithuanian and most old records are in Russian language. Another, epaveldas.lt also have record copies, I've found 2 churches in Kaunas in that time frame that have birth records: Kauno Šv. Kryžiaus (Karmelitų) Romos katalikų bažnyčia and Kauno Švč. Trejybės (Seminarijos) Romos katalikų bažnyčia. I wish you good luck finding your roots!
