Here is my trip to Sydney's Olympic Park. Wow, there are a lot of stadiums for all types of sports and activities. The main focus was Stadium Australia which was formally knows as the ANZ Stadium. Let me know your thoughts.
Stadium Australia, formerly known as ANZ Stadium and Telstra Stadium, is a multi-purpose stadium located in the Sydney Olympic Park, in Sydney, Australia. The stadium, which in Australia is sometimes referred to as Sydney Olympic Stadium, Homebush Stadium or simply the Olympic Stadium, was completed in March 1999 at a cost of A$690 million[1] to host the 2000 Summer Olympics.[2][3] The Stadium was leased by a private company, the Stadium Australia Group, until the Stadium was sold back to the NSW Government on 1 June 2016 after NSW Premier Michael Baird announced the Stadium was to be redeveloped as a world-class rectangular stadium. The Stadium is owned by Venues NSW on behalf of the NSW Government.
The stadium was originally built to hold 110,000 spectators, making it the largest Olympic Stadium ever built and the second largest stadium in Australia after the Melbourne Cricket Ground which held more than 120,000 before its re-design in the early 2000s. In 2003, reconfiguration work was completed to shorten the north and south wings, and install movable seating. These changes reduced the capacity to 83,500 for a rectangular field and 82,500 for an oval field. Awnings were also added over the north and south stands, allowing most of the seating to be under cover. The stadium was engineered along sustainable lines, e.g., utilising less steel in the roof structure than the Olympic stadiums of Athens and Beijing.

That stadium at 2:33 is the home of the mighty Sydney Swans, the SCG. Stadium Australia was used once or twice a year by the Swans for bigger games that needed a bigger capacity. The stadium at 3:53 is the home of GWS Giants, GIANTS Stadium.

I’m a member of Stadium Australia and live about 3kms away - right near that big golf course you panned over. And yes that was Sydney CBD - your curser was literally over the Opera House when you asked “is this Sydney” 😂😂 Edit: the spirals are for pedestrians - it seems to take an age to walk down them, but it’s an effective way of egressing a large crowd without too much crowding. The roof is designed to collect rainwater into enormous tanks under the stadium. Pretty much the grounds are kept using 100% rain water. Those poles, believe it or not, are art 🤦‍♂️ The bridge thing is a recreational walkway over what was historically a brick pit. It was one way of cheaply dealing with what otherwise was just a big bloody hole in the ground. Atmosphere is good when it’s full. When those photos were taken, the bottom tier was retractable so for Aussie Rules they could retract and literally halve the bottom tier and for other sports push them out. It’s changed now. I’ve been there for league, union, Aussie rules, soccer, American College Football (real match showing off to the Aussies). The pic of the people you described as 3rd tier was actually level 4 the members area. Level 5 is enclosed private boxes, level 6 further open seats (nosebleed zone). It’s the same on the other side except no members area and the boxes are for media. It’s a great stadium for members as the dining and bar options are very good for a full night out for big occasions like State of Origin or the NRL Grand Final. As a side note - the stadium really dealt well members during Covid, proactively offering full refunds of membership (or you could hold over for it to pay for the following year). I went to several Olympic events there in 2000 and also both the opening & closing ceremony of the Paralympics. I saw AC/DC there too - amazing stadium for a big concert. Also a number of trips with the grandkids for Monster Trucks.

14:20 for normal games it's pretty average because of the low attendance and the distance from the pitch. A fully packed ANZ stadium in a huge game has amazing atmosphere tho .

The "bridge to nowhere", is situated over the old brickpit which was destined for removal when the Olympic amenities were being constructed. The new environment that had sprung-up between disuse and remodelling was found to have a previously thought extinct Bellfrog species... It was left untouched.

Stadium Australia was designed to be a high capacity Olympic stadium that could be used post-Olympics in both oval and rectangular configurations. This meant a shallow first tier in an oval shape with movable sections of seating on rails. There were plans to redevelop the stadium into a permanent rectangular setup with steeper rake and seating closer to the pitch but the state government scrapped these plans last year due to budgetary constraints brought on by COVID.

Its actually ANZ Stadium, formerly Stadium Australia. The spiral ramps are for high capacity in and out of patrons (walking, not driving) mainly to level 6 which holds a fair proportion of the stadiums capacity.

During the Olympics the ground had 120,000 capacity but was then downgraded to 82,000 with the wings of the stadium dismantled. This thing looks huge when seen from the hilly areas of Sydney in the north, from personal experience. But yes it definitely looks a little outdated in terms of design that’s for sure.

The poles at 9:00 have the names of all the volunteers and workers who helped to build the facilities and make the 2000 olympics happen And that building next to the athletics tracks is the swimming pool, the Qudos bank arena is used for basketball and netball too. There is also lots of shops and some apartments around because the area is a popular recreational area and also hosts the annual Sydney Royal Easter Show, which is a big event and what all the warehouse-looking buildings are used for as well as the convention centres so it is still used a lot. And the big long building next to the AFL stadium is the train station

Those poles you were looking at are a dedication to all the volunteers at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. The green, round pool of water you saw use to be a brick pit. That's what Olympic Park use to be prior to 1994 when we were granted the Olympic Games. It was not demolished due to the fact there were Golden Bell Tree frogs living there and they were considered an endangered species.

Stadium Australia is a very average stadium. Can have 50,000 people in it and feel like a flat atmosphere whereas 35,000 at the SCG feels much better. SCG is easier to get to as well.
@alphaomega7191
@alphaomega7191 3 жыл бұрын
SCG is MUCH harder to get to. For years you had to either walk for a couple of k's from the nearest railway station or deal with buses from the station to get to the SCG whilst Stadium Australia is basically next to a Railway Station and bus stops. Now you have to deal with the white elephant that is the light rail but at least it does take you near the SCG now. For the vast majority of Sydney it's a lot easier getting into Homebush than it is Moore Park and if you drive the parking is better. I love the SCG but honestly you get better views of the game at Stadium Australia - the G is for cricket and it's shape means it's pretty ordinary for League or Union.

@@alphaomega7191 I don't live in Sydney so that's probably why. My train line goes in near the SCG. If I want to get to Homebush I have to change lines.
@alphaomega7191
@alphaomega7191 3 жыл бұрын
@@michaelstanton4059 - Fair enough but it's safe to say no train line goes near the SCG. You have to get off at Central or change and go to Museum and then either walk a couple of Kliks to the ground (uphill about 2 ks taking 28 mins by Cityrail Trip Planner) or change to either a bus or light rail. With Homebush you would have to change but the train you change too I where your first train arrives and the train station is pretty much next to Stadium Australia. In general both require changes in transport to get too but Stadium Australia can be gotten too just by Train and SCG probably needs two types or a significant walk.

The poles have the names of all the people who volunteered at the 2000 Olympics on them. The four round things are so they can drive food etc up to the upper levels and another way for spectators to move around. The other big group of buildings are for the Royal Agricultural Show (multi purpose). It was moved from close to the centre of Sydney and rebuilt when this stadium got built. Alot of Rugby test matches are played their as well. A world record crowd of 116,000 was their to watch Australia play the All Blacks in 2001?. I was their.

Olympic park was built on reclaimed industrial land. The old (nearby) athlete's village housing was sold off after the olympics and a new suburb 'Newington' created. There are hotels and commercial offices in the park now. The spiral ramps are for the spectators, not cars.

You’ve pointed out the biggest flaw with the stadium. It was initially built to fit in as many people as possible in to an athletics track for the Olympics. In mid 2000s they did some tweaking and removed to running track but as you pointed out the seats are positioned too far back away from the pitch - it now holds 80,000 They were going to knock it down and rebuild it purposely for Rugby League and Football - similar to Wembley but covid has put a hold on that plan. It has a great atmosphere when at least the lower bowl (50,000) is full. When 10-15k go to a match it’s a concrete jungle. They recently opened BankWest stadium at Parramatta which is 30k and built specifically for rectangular sports. There’s more of a push to play at a sold out 30k stadium than have 40k at an 80k seat venue. Check out any state of origin game at ANZ/Stadium Australia for 80k mad nsw fans. Best atmosphere possible for that venue.

The Homebush site was FORMERLY (note correct word and spelling) a huge abattoir and the site of the State brickworks. Hence those huge pits that have been converted into lakes.It was also conveted into a huge environmental parkland. It is now named ACCOR Stadium having been ANZ Stadium, Telstra Stadium and Sydney Olympic Stadium. For the Olympics the inner area was oval configuration with the athletics track. There were huge seating sections aat each end probably double what they are now. The early intention was to have moveable seating at the sides which became a rectangular format for non AFL games. I was a volunteer for the Games and also the Paralympics. I made a point of climbing to the very back row on the western side to watch the reaction when Louise Sauvage won one of her gold medals in the wheelchair race. As with London Stadium, a special rail link was built with a brilliant quick loading station. When you were looking at the main entry gate there is a plaza with many stainless steel poles. Those poles bear the names of all the volunteers who participated at the Games.

If it isn’t full house, the atmosphere can be very dull. There’s the parramatta stadium (recently renamed Commanwealth Bank Stadium) which is a small boutique atmosphere of 30,000. It’s a steeper seating inside like the stadiums in Germany to enhance the atmosphere.

I'm guessing a lot of the buildings around were the pool, velodrome, basketball, gymnastics, volleyball, etc indoor stadiums from the 2000 Olympics. The showgrounds are the Giants homeground, GWS play in Canberra's Manuka Oval during the Royal Easter Show. What you thought was Sydney, was indeed the Sydney CBD. The other stadiums near the CBD were the SCG (cricket, Swans, and occasional rugby league game) and Sydney Football Stadium (currently being upgraded; Rugby, Rugby League, Association Football) I think part of the reason the bottom tier looks shallow is the seats (like Docklands) could be taken in and out for rectangular and oval sports. Obviously it needed an oval for an athletics track, but was built with a mostly Rugby League future in mind and adaptable back for ovals. Cricket and AFL have been played there, but it never proved to be a fan hit for either and no longer needs to have an oval option. I think that lower tier is now configured permanently for rectangles, but it would still be shallow without remodelling the upper tiers. As for Adelaide Oval looking to be in a more built-up area. Its on the edge of the city centre, whereas Stadium Australia is close to Sydney's geographical centre but as you saw the major built-up is some way off.

At 15:21, it looks like they are in the process of moving a section of seating. That’s why the concrete is visible. It also explains why the seating is so shallow, because it is designed to be moved around. Also, olympic stadiums must be oval for the running track, so to configure it for rectangular use requires additional low seating in the front.

You should do a reaction to the opera house. It’s an amazing piece of architecture, and an interesting story behind the design.

I live half an hour away to the west. The stadiums are used a lot. I’ve been to concerts there and motocross events.

The 2nd tier are the boxes. There are about 5 or 6 steep rows of seats with a large window behind. I have only been to events sitting in the 1st tier, I usually try for 4-6 rows from the front, the view is okay. For matchs, I have been in the boxes and the view is excellent from the window or the stand.

Stadium Australia is kinda like the Wembley for Sydney where it's used for big events, not commonly used much. But originally designed to fit a full athletics plus the 110 000, it was repurposed built for sports as you've noted the stands are a fair away from the pitched, those bottom stands are actually retractable and fits an entire afl field within, they were pushed back when you were down by the field. Similar problems with Olympic stadiums like London's West ham. The stands are just too far away the pitch. Next door at 'showgrounds' is where GWS Giants play The government had invested in 2 billion to refurbish both Sydney Football stadium (almost finished!) But canned Stadium Australia with the pandemic. I hope they go ahead in the future! Please check out the historic SCG! And adjacent SFS Where your apparent afl swans team play 🤣

Sydney much different from Melbourne have a whole heap of suburban grounds across the city in NRL heartland. Averaging 10k - 30k And all don't share the same 2 stadiums mcg and marvel stadium. All owned by each team and are representative of the area, I.e cronulla sharks (cronulla). In final series those clubs play at a packed out Stadium Australia along with origin etc It's a good business and game atmosphere at smaller grounds at local clubs is awesome, grand final day at a packed ANZ or national teams is awesome. www.austadiums.com/stadiums/

Just to clarify, South Sydney and Canterbury use Stadium Australia as their home ground, but not much atmosphere when there is 15-20,000 in an 80,000 capacity ground. Sydney Showground was also the home ground for Western Sydney Wanderers (A-League) while Parramatta(Bankwest) Stadium was being rebuilt. Sydney Swans play at the SCG, the stadium next door (Sydney Football Stadium) has now been demolished and a new stadium is supposed to be built there but as yet I don't think construction has started. A NSW Govt eff-up, but that's another story. Re Sydney NRL teams, only Cronulla own their own ground, all the other grounds used are council owned or part owned at least.

Loving the commentary Rob! Cannot stop laughing. Lovely overview of Sydney though (yes it's big!). It was Sydney CBD you were looking at near the harbour. The spirals are mainly used to exit the venue due to the huge amounts of people leaving at once. During the Olympics they had temporary stands at either end of the stadium so it could accommodate more spectators. These were removed & a "roof" placed after the Olympics. Qudos Bank arena gets used for "smaller", more intimate big concerts, motocross & fights. The big oval is home to Greater Western Sydney (GWS) Giants, AFL team. It did host the Sydney 7's rugby a couple of years ago too. The aquatic centre you flew over, gets used a lot. The showground area hosts expos & the Royal Easter Show as well as music festivals (combined with Spotless stadium - GWS homeground). There are several hotels where teams stay as its a hassle to get to Olympic Park from the city due to traffic, even more so during big events. Others mentioned the old Sydney Football Stadium (SFS) which has been torn down & is being rebuilt. Next to that is Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). In short, lots to see & do in Sydney!
