Today, I take another nostalic and historic memory lane road trip to the cemetery. In this episode, I visit the famous gravesites of cast members from the 1960s and '1970s classic TV sitcom HOGAN'S HEROES.
My grave site tours today include:
Bob Crane (Colonel Robert Hogan), Westwood Village Memorial Park, Los Angeles, CA
Sigrid Valdis (Frauline Hilda), Westwood Village Memorial Park, Los Angeles, CA
Richard Dawson (Corporal Peter Newkirk), Westwood Village Memorial Park, Los Angeles, CA
Howard Caine (Major Wolfgang Hochstetter), Eden Memorial Cemetery, Mission Hills, CA
I also remember the cast members who were cremeated and have no final resting places to visit and those buried out of the country: Cynthia Lynn, John Banner, Ivan Dixon, Werner Klemperer and Larry Hovis.
Main cast members who are still living include Robert Clary and Kenneth Washington.
Thanks for joining me on my travels on yet another trip to the past, down memory lane.

Werner Klemperer was the son of famous German Conductor Otto Klemperer! He was half Jewish and fled Germany before the War. He only agreed to play Colonel Klink, if he was made to look a fool and never succeeded in any of his plans! I loved that show! Thanks Steve!

Werner also had an outstanding audiobook narration of Robert Harris's Fatherland, a What If styling of political intrigue and murder, set in a post world war II era where Hitler AND JFK are still alive. A MUST listen to!

I remember as a very small kid my Dad watching Hogan's Heroes and absolutely howling with laughter with the antics of Sergeant Schultz and Colonel Klink! I firmly believe that John Banner and Werner Klemperer are the actors who made the show the success it was. I watched an interview with Robert Clary, and he claimed that working with those two men was a delight. I still watch Hogan's Heroes every night on ME TV.

I watch them every day here in central Florida. My favorite actor is John Banner. He was a leading romantic actor in Europe before coming to the states. When he came to the states he got married and gained a lot of weight. He could only get comedic roles in Hollywood. He was highly successful on broadway and most remembered for HOGAN'S HEROES. Thanks, Steve this video was an eye tearer for me. And that doesn't happen often. THANKS, MY FRIEND...MR MAGOO YOU DONE IT AGAIN.

So recently I was watching reruns of a 1970’s game show called tattletales. Bob Crane and his wife (that you featured) were on it and one of them made reference to the fact that he enjoyed making “HomeMovies“. Who was to know that those “movies” would apparently lead to his violent demise.🤷🏻‍♀️

Thanks Steve, A great show and a great vlog👍 I believe that John Banner no longer has a gravesite that can be visited because in Austria they have a time limit on their graves, so someone else now occupies John Banners grave. I'm pretty sure that Richard Dawson can also be seen in the Munsters movie where they go to England.

I've been watching Hogans Hero's a lot lately back when it was on I was finishing HS and was off to college. Not much TV for me during those years. I find show very silly but also very funny. On a sad not another KZbin channel covered Hogans Heros also. It was reported there that due to a sad policy in Austria you lease your grave site for 15/30 years. Then you must pick up the lease again. If you don't the grave is resold and used again. John Banner's grave is one such grave, his widow for whatever reason did not renew the lease. So John is now buried under someone else and only a marker placed by Fans next to the new headstone tells you he's there. Please if this isn't true I would love to be corrected. As usual great job Steve.

Sweet story that I’ve heard about the man who played Carter, Larry Hovis, is that you’ll almost always see him on the show wearing gloves, even when the gloves made little sense to the story. His character was unmarried in the show. But he was so dedicated to his wife that he refused to remove his wedding ring. So he’s almost always seen with gloves on to hide the ring. That was the show’s accommodation to his needs.

Steve, I had a maternal uncle who flew multiple missions over Germany as a right waist gunner on a B-17. He was wounded on a mission and almost lost his arm. While he was in the hospital, his crewmates went on another mission and were shot down with no survivors. He said when he woke up in the hospital recovery ward, Joe Louis and Jackie Robinson were going around to all the patients and pinning Purple Hearts on them. He said the doctors were going to medically discharge him but he convinced them not to and he went on to fly many more missions as a substitute gunner with various B-17 crews for the rest of the war. He lived to be 95.

Thank you out Steve for sharing this video on such a great sitcom. Westwood is tiny, isn't it? It's like a tiny gem of a cemetery hidden amongst the city buildings. So many stars there. When I went years ago I remember Marilyn, of course and Natalie Wood, Jack Lemon, etc...I would love to know how that tiny cemetery got started and if it originally was that small and hidden or if the surrounding land was sold off like Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Do you know Steve? Have a great day. Blessings - Judith 🎵

My German history instructor informed his students that Hollywood was encouraged to make fun of the Nazis, and Hogan’s Heroes was an example of making fun of them. I met Larry Hovis when he came to speak to my speech class at community college in San Francisco in 1979. He was in the touring cast of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas as “Melvin P. Thorpe.” Very nice, funny guy.

I remember that there was an episode of family guy where the Griffins were on family feud with Richard Dawson hosting. After Dawson went on stage, he said something like: Thank you. You’re all lovely. I haven’t heard this much applause since Bob Crane premiered his home movies in my closet. The Peter Griffin character was the only one who laughed at that. It’s good that you keep the memories of people like the cast of Hogans Heros alive because sadly many younger people have not heard of such timeless characters as the lovable Sergeant Schultz or the comically inept Colonel Klink. Fun fact: Werner Klemperer, who played Klink was actually Jewish in real life. He only agreed to play Colonal Klink as long as he never succeeded in his schemes. He never did, so I guess being on the show worked out well for him.
