Big Brutus is Bucyrus-Erie 1850-B Electric Shovel, designed for the Pittsburg and Midway Coal Mining Company in the 1960's. It is an engineering masterpiece for its time and has been distinguished as a National Engineering Landmark and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Big Brutus was a Brute for sure. Definitely big Iron for the time.

It really is difficult to get the full sense of how big it is! We had seen videos and pictures before going and were still surprised. Just amazing that something so big could be operated by 3 people.
