A visit to some of the key filming locations for Mad Max 2 (aka The Road Warrior) in and around the Broken Hill, and Silverton areas in outback New South Wales , Australia May 2019.
Many, many thanks to the Mad Max 2 museum in Silverton.
Do yourself a favour and visit this wonderful museum.
Credit also to the great music from the film written by Brian May.
If you have any information regarding the fate or location of the masters for this iconic Australian film score please contact me.

What really made this movie riveting was the musical score by the late Brian May: with music like that, even an instruction video on how to take the rubbish out to the curb is made into a harrowing experience indeed!

Turns out I was born exactly 9 months before Mad Max 2 was released. Such an iconic movie of which the likes of artistry, thought provoking and questioning what if moments in social and political views is rare to see in film now. I really love these filming locations, but sad to see a lot of the locations are privatized as it would have been nice to see the compound. The theme music and lining up the shots from the movies was great! You can see the same bushes are still in frame 40 years later too. Thanks a lot for your effort, enjoyed this.

I went to all these locations in July 2018. Took my metal detector to the end scene where the truck rolled over and I have spot welding fragments from the truck. The surface is clean, but dig and you'll find stuff

I had not been in Australia long, and joined the Army Reserve in 87. We set off to join an exercise and the convoy travelled a long way across NSW. We stopped for breakfast on some remote road in the middle of nowhere. SGT Fox came over with a coffee in his hand, and said “you have seen this before....” It was the Monie Monie lookout. It was a real Mad Max moment - a long convoy of Internationals, Macs, Land Rovers etc, all lined up at dawn. Amazing moment. EDIT: Edited to add: the moment made all the more surreal by two things: 1. The very round, short and bespectacled OC, and the very tall and skinny 2IC walking up the road in the rising sun, looking like they belonged in the movie. 2. The incessant radio traffic as operators tried to maintain contact with other parts of the convoy. All in all, a strange moment in time.

Good work - loved the video! Brian May was arguably Australia's greatest film composer. Not that we don't have plenty of other talent, but May was really a pioneer in that he was the first (in this country) who really understood what cinematic scoring must entail: not merely pretty or superficially emotional music, but that which employs subtlety & economy yet enormous precision, seeps into & permeates the film's images & soundtrack, and really forges a psychological connection between the viewer and what is transpiring on the screen. You can tell May listened to & learnt from Hollywood composers like Bernard Herrmann & Jerry Goldsmith. ROAD GAMES (1980) is another excellent example, the score for which was released in the 1990s by 1M1 Records. I'm not sure where MAD MAX 2's score was recorded (probably NSW), but ROAD GAMES was done at the old Allan Eaton Studios in Inkerman Street, St Kilda in Melbourne - now sadly derelict. Possibly the masters for those recordings met with a similar fate, but I'm pretty sure the MAD MAX 2 ones are gone. This happens also in the American film industry, but less often, and of course it is a tragedy harder felt here because our film output is but a fraction of theirs. What they often do in the US is re-record the score using the composer's original manuscripts. But sometimes even those have been lost, and so archivists, musicologists & cinephiles with their trained ears have to watch & listen to the film (often a poor quality print, or with noisy SFX intruding) and then try to reconstruct everything from scratch as faithfully as possible. If May's score manuscripts are still extant, they would be held in some archive somewhere (University of Southern California perhaps?). I believe he has living heirs. If you can track down Phillip Powers, who used to run 1M1 Records he would probably know. You're not the first person who has wanted to hear all this glorious music in its entirety. I met Brian May in 1991 when he was conducting an original symphonic piece he had been commissioned to write for the opening of the Melbourne Central Shopping Centre. Alas, I was just a kid then and didn't have any such questions for him that I would now love to ask...

Thanks. Very much agree that May was and will probably remain Australia's greatest film composer. I would say his score for MM2 is by far the greatest score ever written for an Australian film. There is a lot of rumour and speculation regarding the fate of the masters and May's written score with the general consensus being they were recorded over or lost. I did contact 1M1 records many years ago but sadly got no reply. I did however discover an online article from Screen And Sound dated 2010 regarding Mays actual written score for the film, which along with a number of other scores and recording equipment, was bequeathed to the Queensland Museum of Technology. The following is what was written about MM2.... "The score for Mad Max 2: Road Warrior was also part of this category but unfortunately the orchestrated cues for this film were damaged when a flash flood inundated the building where May was storing his manuscripts. Most of the pages of this score are fused together and there is badly decaying mouldy paper around the edges. It may be possible for the individual pages of the score to be saved, at least in part, by manuscript restoration experts." So the is some hope that at least the written orchestrated score can be saved for a possible re recording. I have been to their web site but there is nothing about Brian May at all let alone Mad Max 2. I have been meaning to contact them but have not done so at this stage. Lets hope that something eventually turns up. Thanks for the info. Cheers

The car from mad Max that Mel Gibson drives in the movies was re used for the different movies,it sat in a bit of wasteland in the desert untouched for years and nobody even noticed it there with its modifications ,it was then picked up by someone and restored, placed in a museum in Melbourne Australia for a few years, then sold to someone in Scotland (I live in Argyll Scotland) and was shipped here where it sat in a private museum for a number of years (a private museum which was open to the public) which I did not know about until they announced its closure on the internet and I think in the newspapers which was a good few years ago now, when the car collection was on display it was less than 2 hours drive from my location, the car along with all the others from the collection (the cars of the stars collection) was then sold and shipped off to the USA and as far as I know and the last I heard it was in Florida USA , I'll have a quick look online and see if it is still around and also if it is on display or in a closed private collection... I was really annoyed at the time the car was sold and exported as I never had any idea whatsoever it was out of Australia not least that it was only a short drive away from me .

Brian May was a wonderful Australian composer who passed way to young. his score for MM2 was unique, Iconic and an instant classic. Sadly rumours have persisted for 25 years or more that the master tapes for May's score were taped over and or destroyed. The short album released by label Varese Sarabande in the early 80's is currently all that remains. The album is pretty much a mess full of edits and truncated cues. Focusing on the more melancholy moments of the score. Much of the relentless action music is missing. Hopefully one day the original tapes will be discovered so this iconic Australian film score can recieve the release it deserves.

LOL. Would like to go there myself one day. Hopefully not to long otherwise it will never happen ?? You know how it goes ? Keep putting it off and it never happens . To many times i have seen this happen. Sounds like you had a great time.

@@weldmachine I planned it for 2 years :) You really get the feeling of being in the middle of nowhere. As soon as you turn off onto the highway from Ningan, the scenery changes and it's all outback from there. I met some characters, had some great feeds. You do have to dodge a lot of road kill and you'll learn that goats are a lot smarter than roos in that regard.

@@JafarCalley Yes. Goats way smarter than those bloody roos. I drove Adelaide to Sydney. Bought a car then imported it back to the US.

I'm visiting Broken Hill later this month and planned to visit these locations. Did you find out anything since about getting access to the compound area?

Loved it. The places did seem to come back to life for a moment there. Even looked them up on Google maps. You have such an amazing country. Compared to our country (Belgium) the shear size of Australia is dazzling. Hope to come visit some day. Probably a fair amount of work went into making this;Thank you !

Will be heading out this way in a few weeks time, the museum and Mundi Mundi Lookout are definitely on my radar. Will probably head out down Pinnacles Road to get a glimpse, shame it's being mined now. Also, where exactly on Menindee Road is the location of the Interceptor explosion? Pretty keen to go have a look at that. Good video mate, cheers for sharing.
@indysolo81
@indysolo81 4 жыл бұрын
There are actually two locations for the interceptor crash. The crash and roll then the roll down into the ravine. The ravine itself is about 15 mins along Menindee Rd out of Broken Hill. The roads starts to become curvy and you will come to a slight rise and crest. as you come over the crest you will see a guard rail on the left. The ravine is on the right side of the road just before the guard rail. There is an easy spot to pull over just before the guard rail. The crash site itself is further out. It would be an idea to call into the MadMax2 museum before you head out. Im sure Adrian would be more than happy to give you the exact locations. cheers.

I was in Australia a few years back 2016 drove from Adelaide to Alice springs then on to Cairns. Anyways I wanted to do a "small" detour to visit Silverton and the mad max museum but my missus had never even heard of mad max and didn't want to waste the time. I doubt I'll ever get that chance again. Gutted at least I can experience it through KZbin, thank you.

I dont know why but you wouldn't of been able to, apparently there is no road connection from South Australia into outback New South Wales. My son lives in Yulara a few hours south of Alice Springs, where Ayres Rock actually is, when he comes to Sydney he flies but if he was to drive he would have to come via either South Australia or Queensland.

I was there just before Easter 2019 and also back in 2004 while on a work trip to BH. Both times I got pictures right at the top there looking down toward the bend mimicking the picture taken that can be seen in the Silverton Hotel and imagining the wreckage scattered everywhere. Knowing about the gathering next year, I may be back!

Did pretty much the same trip in June/July last year. Except I didn’t let No Admittance signs stop me. Climbed the pinnacle and visited the river bed. That Adrian is a good bloke isn’t he. Showed me those sites too. Did you see the Snake Truck and wreck of the interceptor? They are in the back yard of a property pretty much where you met up with Adrian and FURYRD just south of Broken Hill.
