In this video we visit Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, the most sacred temple in Chiang Mai.
Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is a prominent and sacred Buddhist temple located on Doi Suthep mountain, about 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) northwest of Chiang Mai city in northern Thailand. The temple is one of the most famous and important religious sites in the region, offering panoramic views of Chiang Mai and its surroundings.
Here are some key features and information about Wat Phra That Doi Suthep:
Legend and History:
According to legend, the temple's origins date back to the 14th century. The story goes that a monk named Sumana Thera found a relic, believed to be a shoulder bone of the Buddha, and placed it on the back of a white elephant. The elephant climbed Doi Suthep mountain, trumpeted three times, and then died on the spot, which was interpreted as a sign to build a temple there. Wat Phra That Doi Suthep was subsequently founded in 1383.
Architecture and Design:
The temple showcases classic Lanna architecture, which is a distinctive style found in the northern regions of Thailand. The central chedi (stupa) is a significant feature, adorned with gold-plated umbrellas. The temple is adorned with intricate carvings, statues, and murals that depict various Buddhist stories and motifs.
Naga Staircase:
Access to the temple is traditionally gained by climbing the Naga Staircase, which consists of 306 steps flanked by intricately designed Nagas (serpent-like mythical creatures). The staircase is both a physical and symbolic ascent to the sacred temple.
Golden Chedi:
The central chedi at Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is covered in gold leaf and contains the aforementioned relic. It is an iconic symbol of the temple and one of the most revered structures.
Viewpoint:
The temple offers breathtaking views of Chiang Mai and the surrounding countryside. On clear days, visitors can see the city and the mountains in the distance.
Wat Phra That Doi Suthep Festival:
The temple hosts an annual festival, usually in late February or early March, to celebrate its founding. The festival attracts pilgrims and tourists alike and includes religious ceremonies, traditional performances, and a vibrant atmosphere.
Visitor Information:
Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is open to visitors daily. There is an entrance fee for non-Thai nationals. It's advisable to dress modestly when visiting temples in Thailand, covering shoulders and knees. Additionally, removing your shoes before entering the temple buildings is a customary practice.
Visiting Wat Phra That Doi Suthep not only provides a glimpse into Thai religious and cultural heritage but also offers a serene and picturesque setting atop the mountain.

An interesting trip. Young ones made a good climb (got some sweets!) and it was all worth it because you stood upon holy ground. :-) The ascent itself was awe-inspiring, I guess that helps keep you going.
