Hello friends,
I spent two weeks in Vietnam over the holiday break. It had been over 13 years since I last visited, so this trip was highly anticipated. I enjoyed incredible food, caught up with relatives I hadn't seen in a long time and went on a mini trip with my mom to Da Nang and Hoi An. I hope you enjoy this travel vlog!
xx,
Julia

I didn't know you were Vietnamese too! The intertwinement of Vietnamese and Cantonese peoples is super interesting. Actually my grandfather was the same mix as you - half Viet and half Canto! He ended up marrying my Cantonese grandma who grew up in Vietnam. Both of them could speak canto, vietnamese, mandarin and english (my grandma could speak teochew too). To this day, I'm still very confused about which things belong to each of the cultures since as the third generation after they emigrated to Australia, I grew up with a complete mix of Chinese (cantonese) and Vietnamese traditions and foods (plus, adapted to western culture). I really wish I learned at least one of the languages and asked more questions before my grandparents passed and actually they never went back to either of their countries so I never got to experience it with them😭 But seeing your videos really helps me to feel at least a lil connected to canto culture and now that I've learned you're viet too I'm so happy I get to connect to that as well ❤

@@minamelka860no :)) it's not. Vietnam and China are 2 different countries even in the part, present or the future (forever). And it's important that we respect each other as neighbors and maintain a peaceful relationship. Both Vietnam and China are in Asia, of course there will be certain cultural similarities, but not too many. I think you should learn more about the history of Asia and Southeast Asia before commenting😊.

@@minamelka860 about your question u can absolutely go online(gg) to find out, right?. It's so silly to ask such a question and then bring political factors into comparison below. Leave the mixed-race people alone.

Hi, Julia. I'm new to your vlog and I like that you'd like to reconnect with your Vietnamese side. Not sure if you've tried, but I found that aside from being surrounded by Vietnamese speakers, watching movies and singing karaoke are a couple of great ways to pick up the language. I know it helped me substantially! Of course, the desire to communicate with family members would be a big motivating factor! I am hoping to bring my husband and children back to Vietnam in summer (really hot and humid, I'm aware, but only time we can travel with the kids 😀). Any tips on keeping cool, and where to eat, what to see, would be great! Have a wonderful time there!

AH HA, so my suspicions are right! I have been watching your KZbin uploads and suspected you had Vietnamese in you because of what your taste buds tended to gravitate towards in NYC! Thanks for the helpful video. It inspires me to dig back to my roots as well: My parents immigrated to the U.S. in 1975. I was born in TX in 1977. I speak only in Viet to my mom (dad is deceased). I have begun listening to a ton of Viet music (My Tam, Vicky Nhung, etc) to improve on the language. My sister and I plan on visiting at the end of the year. My older sister(like you was born in VN and came to the states when she was super young) has never been back to the homeland; it has been 20 years since my last trip. What you shared is so inspiring and makes me excited!! We are skiddish on eating the street food because of many horror stories of getting sick because our bodies are not adapted to the parasites or whatever...seeing you eat snails makes me want some but the next footage shows you sick : ( Hopefully we will be spared. Glad you are ok. Take care and thanks again for taking the time to share your experience.

I can definitely relate to being an immigrant child and not feeling as close a connection to my Viet background especially with not knowing the language. I'm curious cause I'm going to be visiting Vietnam soon, was it ever awkward to not speak Viet if people assumed you would know it? It's honestly one of my biggest insecurities!
