Great breakdown of the film. I just finished watching it. Many years ago, I couldn't imagine being able to sit through a film like this. So maybe it's older and wiser, I don't know. It's a visually stunning film to look at. Given its limitations, a tiny budget, shot on video, as an experiment over seven days is extraordinary, given its long-lasting controversy and importance to Japanese cinema. It could easily be argued that this film could have potentially been far more graphic and disturbing, but it's not. Japanese people, culture are generally incredibly complicated and similarly fascinating. As distressing as this film is, domestic life for the average Japanese person can also appear very unusual from a purely western perspective. Good movies should make us think, discuss and even at times disturb us.

Absolutely agree. I think it’s always a reductive task to study these films without considering the unique circumstances and culture they were produced within.

@@EastAsianCinemaHistory thanks man, love to chat with you one time about your interest in these films. I used to live in Meguro, basically next door to one these production houses still active today. Not the same quality of films being produce in the 60's, 70's, 80's ect.. but like roger Corman always said, "Every film ever made is exploiting something or someone". It was along those lines. cheers
